I guess Randall decided to rob a store. He had a gun in his coveralls, but when he pulled it out, he shot himself in the ankle by accident! Then he hobbled over to a lady and asked for a ride to the hospital. Before the cops arrived, the story was "I shot myself, but it was an accident." When the cops showed up, it was "Someone shot me, I don't know who." Of course, that didn't wash.

When the story was written, he was in the hospital, and he may lose his foot because of his stupidity. Way to go.
