There's A Tap For That
Thanks, Jen, for the lead on this one.
You know, when I read about things like Bartab for the iPhone, I'm starting to think people should get back to using that old Phonebook. We're forgetting the reason why we do things.
With Bartab, you can use your iPhone to buy your friend a drink. It only works at certain bars, but you can zap your friend a virtual coupon via facebook message or I assume a text, they show it to the bartender, and there ya go.
Um, isn't the point of buying your friend a drink that you're sitting with them, spending some time with them? How much fun is drinking with your friends if you're not really with them?
If by accident, this app does something else really cool, then I'll eat my words. But on its face, it looks kinda dumb.

Help Shape Accessible Voting For Ontario
I got a little email this morning that I figured I'd pass on. I bet I got it because of commenting on their accessible voting plan. There's a small part of me, a small crazy part, that's thinking about going for this. But I don't know where the meetings are, how long they are, and how easy it would be to get to them. But at the very least, I can pass the info along.
Good Morning,So there ya have it. I have downloaded the word application, I haven't had a look at it yet.

Thank You Cito
Tonight is the last home game of the year for the Toronto Blue Jays and barring the unforseen, the last home game ever as manager for Cito Gaston, who is retiring at the end of the season.
Tonight is being celebrated as thank you Cito night, which is awesome. I wish I was going to be there, but I'll be listening to the game here instead. It would have been nice to be there to say thanks to him for everything he's meant to the team and to the fans. You can say what you want about some of the decisions he's made or hasn't made, about his tendency to not play young guys who need more experience at the big league level even though it's September and the team isn't going to the playoffs, the way he handles pitchers or the sometimes strange way he puts his lineups together, but no matter what you think of him, you have to admit that more than almost anybody else, Cito Gaston is Blue Jays baseball. Through the most successful years the Jays have had, he's been there as a coach and manager. Even this year, when everybody thought the team would shit the bed and finish dead last in the division with an awful losing record, they can't finish any worse than .500 when it's all said and done. He can't take all the credit for that of course, but using the sports logic of teams living and dying by the manager, you have to give the man his due.
I'm looking forward to next season and the new manager, but I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't a small part of me deep down that wouldn't mind seeing old Cito come back again. It's for the best that he's moving on, but it's hard to let go of the guy who gave you the greatest years in your history.
Thanks for the memories Cito, we'll never forget you.

Coping Strategy: Needs Improvement
If James Lee Frank was trying to set an example for his kid, then what he is demonstrating is how to be a complete idiot. He was not happy with how his kid was doing in school, and somehow his kid's performance had nothing to do with the kid at all. This guy thought his kid's difficulties were completely due to bad teaching or something. So, to solve this problem, he called up the school and threatened to blow it up, killing everyone inside. It's never mentioned in the story where the guy's kid is when he made the threat.
The school responded by going into lockdown. Frank tried to get into the school, and failed, so he ripped a two-way communication system off the building and ran off. He was caught not far away.
As an aside, before 2001, does anyone know if the term "weapons of mass destruction" was used in the context of bombs? Or is that a new creation?
Something tells me poor performance in school runs in the family.

I'm In The Mood For Food! Oh Bother! There's No More Food Here!
Let's add Lynne Gravier to the list of stupid people feeding bears. I think next time I go to a casino, I want to take this woman with me. She has been feeding bears for 25 years, even letting them into her house, and she did not become a yummy feast. Also, no neighbours have been feasted upon. This is only because she is extremely, extremely lucky.
Everybody in her neighbourhood had better be careful now, because she has been ordered not to feed the bears. They're going to start looking for more human food wherever they can get it.
People need to realize they're not helping animals by feeding them. They're actually hurting them by making it more likely they'll be shot, and killing their wild instincts so they can't survive on their own.

Scooting Around The Law
So, here's a warning to everyone in Florida. Apparently, if someone gets busted for DUI and they're told they can't drive a car, they can still tool down the road at 20 miles an hour in a scooter. Oh I feel better already, especially since these suckers have a nearly silent motor. Great! So, as a blind person, I would now have to worry about being silently smucked by sober folks in hybrids, and folks who have the potential to be drunk behind the wheel of one of these scooter things. Just perfect.
I have to chuckle that the guys selling these things say they're a less humiliating means of getting around. Not if you keep marketing them as "DUI scooters". After a while, people will know what these scooters mean, and as soon as someone sees their buddy on one of these things, they'll know exactly why. They might as well wear a sign that says "I don't have a license because I drank and drove."
It drives me insane to hear people whining about how much it sucks to not be able to drive, and they just have to find a way around it. It wouldn't kill you to take a bus or a cab or walk. If it was such a life-ending experience to not be able to drive, I guess I'd be dead by now. You *were* able to drive, and the reason you can't now is your own damn fault, so suck it up, princess.
I wonder how long these things will stay legal. They're selling like mad to people who lost their license because of DUI. Just give it a bit of time, and we'll start hearing the reports of accidents involving these DUI scooters. Then maybe the law will change.

Let's Leave This Idea In The Dump Near The Consideration Stage
God, what a stupid idea this is, and I'm not just saying that because I personally don't watch a lot of movies.
According toreports,Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Disney are considering launching a service that would give customers the privilege of watching their films on set-top boxes before they come out on DVD or Blue-ray, and even before they hit the other on demand services. Doesn't sound half bad, I hear you saying. What would this set me back? The answer is $30...per movie! $30 Per movie, and you only get to watch it once! What's that? Doesn't sound so good anymore? Yeah, didn't think so.
The same people who come up with ideas like this are the same ones who are sitting back scratching their heads and wondering why people have this pesky tendency to pirate content. I'd never claim to have all the answers to that question, but I do know that value for money has a little something to do with it, and on that front, this is going to do just about everything but help.
You would have to be a complete idiot to try this out for any reason, even if covering stuff like this falls into your job description. It's one of those things you don't even have to test out to know that it's a patently stupid idea. It costs more than actually going to the movies, for crying out loud! And if the hook is getting to watch a movie through the box you already own, you can already do that for a flat monthly fee by subscribing to an on demand service that let's you watch gazillions of the things or by paying around $6 to see it on pay-per-view.
I realize that Hollywood executives think we're stupid (just look what they're passing off as entertainment), but this is a whole new level of disrespect. Even if the service never rolls out, just the mere fact that somebody was able to think up and present this cunning plan with a straight face is disrespect enough, and enough to make me never want to put another dime into the film industry for as long as I live.

Odds And Ends And Updates
I had a few random thoughts on some things, so figured I'd throw 'em together and make a small post.
Remember back when I said I would switch Trixie's food? Well, the switch is complete, and boy does she seem to love her new food. Holy hell. She will suck that stuff back like it's going out of style! What's more, she seems to have even more energy! More energy? Good grief! I'll have to watch her weight to make sure I'm not giving her too little or too much for the next little while, but I think Trix votes we stick with the fish. Hopefully it won't stop her up like happened the last time I got her a fish-based food.
The one art I haven't mastered is switching at just the right time. I don't want to start the switch too soon because I'll have a bunch of left over food, but I don't want to start it too late and run out of the old grub before I'm ready to. As of right now, I have a bunch of the old lamb food left. Not a whole heap, but more than I think I would really use up by using as the occasional kibble in the treat pouch sort of thing. Ug! Ah well, I'll figure something out.
I haven't given a huppy update in a while, partially because I hadn't seen him since we went to Ribfest at the end of August. Boy have I missed a lot. Back then, he was walking with help. Now, he's just plain old walkin'! It's amazing to watch him walking around the apartment, loo dee doo dee doo, when before, he had to scooch or crawl or hold onto something. Now he's just strollin' along.
He's also picking up words like mad. I think I've heard him say uh-oh, eeewww, cool, car, cow, cookie, daddy, doggy, shoe, and the other day, I swear he said fly! I said "Are you ready to fly?" and he said "fly!" He was also trying for boing. He's a fiend!
Not only is he a word fiend, he's super flexible! We were in this one convenience store the other day, and the aisles are really narrow. So when we go in there, the huppy's mom runs down and gets stuff, and I stand on stroller duty. In the early days, that just meant I would lean on the stroller and make sure it didn't roll anywhere. Now, it involves keeping huppy hands off shelves, and making sure that all items that belong in the stroller *stay* there! The other day, while I was on stroller duty, I had to bend down and pick up a small blanket that the huppy sent flying, and when I stood back up, I heard this squeaking sound. I went to check what trouble he had managed to get into, and found...he was chewing on his shoe!...with his foot still in it! Little dude, you need to take up yoga immediately.
He's also a sneaky little devil. He likes to try and push buttons. Sometimes, this button-pushing gets him in a whole bunch of trouble, like when he messes with the TV or the computer. The other day, a friend of the huppy's mom's was over, and we got a glimpse into his little huppy brain. When the huppy's mom was busy with something, he walked over to the computer, looked at the huppy's mom's friend, and she said if he could speak, he would have been saying, "Should I shut off this computer? Please say yes. I know I'll get in trouble, but should I do it anyway?" Then the little bum did it. That little rascal! Ah but ya can't help but laugh.
Today, I was at Tim Horton's, and I got thinking about something I have referred to as the All Kinds muffin phenomenon. It's the tendancy for people at coffee shops to not want to read the choices of coffees, doughnuts, muffins, etc. and say "Oh what do you want? We have all kinds of things." I got thinking about the general sense of panic I feel when I'm in the Timmy's line. I always go there with the intention of trying something new, but as soon as I get there, I blank out as far as what they've got and just scramble for something I remember being on the menu before. I think it's because that Timmy's line moves fast fast fast. Hell, Tim's won't even put in debit, probably because they think it would slow the line down too much. People go in there with one thing in mind, and one thing only. They want their large double double coffee. So, I feel that if I even take a second, people will start getting mad. I'm standing between them and their coffee, and considering what some will do to get their coffee, I don't want to do that for too long. I start to envision honking horns. "Beep beep, come on lady, pick a doughnut. Honk honk, it's not life and death here, beep beep honk honk." Noone has ever said that, but that's the feeling I get. So half the time, when I go in there, I don't get to try the stuff I hear about. Do any other blinks feel this way, or am I crazy?
I'm really blad I put up Robert Mask's obituary. Lots of people have been searching for it, and have found us. I even got an email from someone who knew him, and she also knows my brother. Glad we could help get the information people were looking for.
My dad went to the funeral, and he said it was quite well-attended. Apparently, 16 rooms at the local hotel got booked by folks who were coming to the service from out of town. Yup, he will be missed by a lot of people. I'm glad so many could make it. It makes those of us who weren't there not feel so bad. I guess the weather was dreary up there, but at least it wasn't raining buckets like it was here today.
And that's about it for this little collection of thoughts. Hope you enjoyed the short trip.

Unhappy Birthday
This story of a kid's birthday party turning into a drunken brawl causes me to ask so many questions.
There's the obvious question. What kind of idiots would break beer bottles and involve themselves in a massive 75-person brawl in front of 30 children? Not only are you setting a horrible example, but you're endangering the children! And, as much as I'm sure sometimes it feels like lots of booze would be required to make it through a children's birthday party, is it really a good idea?
But when I saw when this happened, I had more questions. This happened, in front of 30 children, at 1 a.m! And the birthday girl had 3 candles on her birthday cake. Who the hell holds a children's party in the wee hours of the morning?
Luckily, no kids were harmed in this massive disaster, but one guy needed eye surgery after being stabbed with a broken beer bottle, and they're checking him for brain damage. Isn't that just a wonderful lasting memory from a birthday party? "Daddy hasn't been the same since we went to little Suzie's birthday party when she turned 3!"
But it looks like several kids will have lots of lasting memories from this party. Family Services is involved, so many of them may have new people to call mom and dad.
How sad. That's all I can say.

Beware Of Gays
As he drove along the highway, a guy kept seeing billboards with beautiful, tanned people and the words "Visit the Garden of Hedon" written on them. His curiosity got the best of him and he turned in at the entrance to the place a few miles down the road.
He went inside a building marked "Registration" and saw an attractive woman sitting at a desk.
"Exactly what do you do here?" he asked.
"It's quite simple," said the receptionist. "This is a nudist camp. We take off all our clothes and commune with nature."
"Cool," said the guy, "count me in!"
So he paid his membership fee, took off his gear and strolled off.
As he walked along a path, he saw a big sign which read, "Beware of Gays."
A little further along he saw another sign which read the same thing: "Beware of Gays."
He continued walking until he came to a small clearing and saw a bronze plaque set in the ground. He bent over to read it, as you would expect him to do. It read, "Sorry, you've had two warnings!"

Open The Door, Get On The Floor, Everybody...Hump The Dinosaur?
Ooo! A humping! We haven't had one of these in a while.
All we know for sure is that somebody flashed some girls in a playground, and then humped a dinosaur-shaped piece of playground equipment. Police think that a drunken fellow by the name of Guadelupe Paramo-Almanza was the one who did it, but they're not sure because the witnesses couldn't make a positive ID. Well, can you blame them? I don't think I could remember the *face* of someone who whipped out his stuff and then started makin' it with a toy dinosaur.
Yuck! I hope people who maintain the park have a good hose handy. Not that hose!

Who Has Egg On His Face Now?
Agim Demiri has a strange idea of how to express his disapproval with court decisions. When coming before Judge Timothy J. McJoynt to deal with some owed child support, I guess he didn't like the ruling, so threw an egg at the judge. He narrowly missed him, but the egg splattered a plaque and some other stuff in the room. They found another egg on him afterward while searching him. The guy came fully intending to hurl eggs at the judge. That's real mature. Then, in another session, he brought a box cutter! Dude, learn! If the egg got you 90 days in jail, who knows what the box cutter could have earned you. Amazingly, no charges were added when finding the box cutter. Why the hell not?
Well, I guess it could be worse. He could have pulled a Weusi McGowan.

He's The Kind Of Man Who Knows When To Quit
When I said it looked like there would be no consequences for slimy DA Kenneth Kratz, apparently I was wrong. He thought he was above the law, but four more women came forward with similar claims, and the governor was working on forcibly removing him from his position. Then, Kratz decided it would be simpler just to resign. Good riddance. I'm happy to see the right thing happening for once.

Somehow This Latex Didn't Protect Me Like I Thought It Would
We have learned before that spray paint is toxic, especially when applied to the face. Now, Brian Mattert has taught us that being covered in latex paint will not cause a taser to become a death ray. It won't do much of anything, except force the cops to replace their uniforms.
What On Earth Did They Put It Out With?
There isn't much to this story, just that a Semi pulling a trailer full of fire extinguishers caught fire. Hmmm. That doesn't speak volumes for the fire extinguishers! Were they made from Chimfex?
What A Crappy Plan
Oh my my. I'd hate to see the collective IQ at this family reunion if Donald Denney and his son Donald Denney are any indication. I mean, they didn't even bother putting Jr. on one and Sr. on the other. I can see it all now when the younger Denney was born. Young Donald: Waaaaa!
Proud mom: Duh, whatdya wanna call him?
Daddy dear: Hmmm, um, uh, um, hmmm...Gee! How 'bout... ... Oo! I've got it! *snaps fingers* Donald! Yeah! Good name that is.
Here's why I say that. The story goes that the young Donald was in prison for a few years, but I guess he needed some money. So he talked to his dad over the phone. Yeah, the prison phone, ya know, the prison phone that's recorded all the time. And over their phone conversations, a plan is hatched that someone will smuggle in a golf ball-sized chunk of black tar heroin and young Denney will sell it.
And it won't be just any ol' smuggling job. A woman will come see him, with the ball of heroin in her vagina. At some point she will transfer it to her mouth, give young Donald a great big kiss, and pass the wrapped up heroin to his mouth, at which point, he would swallow it. Oh but we're not done. He would swallow it and wait for it to pass through his system. He would poop it out, and then sell it around the jail.
If you can believe it, this plan gets even dumber. You see, old Donald cannot find a woman whose record is clean enough that she would be allowed to visit him. So, plan b, plan b! He will come see him, with the heroin in his ass, put it in his mouth, kiss his son, gulp gulp, plop plop, cha ching. Oh yeah, so totally gonna work!
Bear in mind that all this is being discussed over the phone, complete with the day Dummy Daddy Donald is going to come see his son. When papa arrives, he is immediately met by agents who have a warrant to give him a full looking over, at which point they find the smack in his crack. Now, papa's bound for jail, sure to be placed in a similar facility to the one that holds his son.
Wow. If that doesn't belong in the "that was dumb" tag, I don't know what does.

Caffeine Bound For Your Yom Crappur
This story about jews buying caffeine suppositories to take during Yom Kippur to get around the fasting and no caffeine rule reminded me of Steve's post about sabbath-friendly appliances.
But do you need caffeine that badly that you're willing to take it up the pooper? I guess the answer is yes, since the pharmacy even advertised it, and people bought them like mad. Yeesh! I think it's time to think about cutting back on the coffee.

I Know Markakis Sucks, But That's No Reason To Throw At His Head
This is probably going to sound stupid coming from a guy who's favourite sports involve people getting beaten up and injured, but all this stuff about how the Jays need to retaliate against the Orioles for throwing at and hitting Jose Bautista twice yesterday needs to stop. I get that people say it's a part of the game to plunk a guy from the other team after the other team plunks one of your own, but seriously, why? What does it prove? Hitting a guy deliberately is one of those parts of the game of baseball that I hate even more than I hate the intentional walk. It's dangerous and it's stupid, and it's not what a person signs up for when he chooses baseball as a career or a fun little pastime. You take up boxing or MMA or pro wrestling or even football and hockey expecting that you're going to get drilled here and there, but in baseball the only thing that should be getting hit on purpose is the ball.
Back to the question of what does it prove, let me add something to that. What does it prove against a shitty team like the Baltimore Orioles? What does it prove especially when a shitty team like the Baltimore Orioles does it at the end of a series they're losing at the end of a season where they've played like they're trying to mathematically eliminate themselves from the playoffs for the next 4 years all at once? Us hitting their good player whoever that is only brings a team with a future down to their level. I may be in the minority, but it would say a lot more if they let it go and let the numbers 15-3 speak for themselves. Instead of remembering to retaliate next June, I'd be working on making sure that at the end of next year, the number after that - is a 0.

The Accessible Path To A New Passport Is Partially Blocked By Braille Bumps
So the time is coming for me to renew my passport. I got it at the beginning of 2006, so it won't be long before it expires. I decided I would start looking into it now, even though that probably seems absurd. But since this is a passport and forms can be yucky and complicated, I figured I should get on it in case I'd need any help making sure it's all good.
Thankfully, renewing a passport is not nearly as complicated as getting the first passport. You don't need to send your pictures to folks to verify that it's you, and those people don't have to be of a set few occupations. You also don't have to fill out heaps and piles of documentation. It's a two-page form, plus a couple of photos, one of which is signed and dated by the office taking the picture, along with $87 payable by cheque, money order or credit card, and voila, off you go. You do have to have a couple of references, but they can be anybody who's known you for 2 years except family. Not too shabby.
I went to the simplified renewal application page, and started to read. It looks like I can get one of these babies! I got my passport within the last 6 years, I was over 16 when I got it, I'm almost at the expiration date, so it will have been valid for 5 years by the time I do this, it was issued in Canada, it was a regular passport, and it's never been lost or stolen and I'm pretty sure it's not damaged. It's a little bent from being kept in a fanny pack from my last plane trip, but other than that, it's clean as a whistle. Hell, I think it has maybe 4 stamps on it. Poor lonely little passport. Woohoo! This is going to work!
I downloaded the PDF form. I was fully prepared to see that you have to print the form and fill it out with someone, but oh my god, it's an accessible PDF, complete with headings for easy navigation and form fields! I can fill this son of a bitch out myself! It was midnight when I looked at this, so I couldn't shriek with delight like I wanted to.
I read the instructions first, and found one perplexing sentence.
So, this morning, I hippity hopped over to the passport site and called the phone number with my pile of questions for them. They say they're available for questions from 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m? Let's hit them at 8 in the morning!
My first question, although it may sound stupid, was what is their definition of a damaged passport. I mean, these people get hissy if a bit of your shoulder is bare in the picture, or one ear is showing more than another. Maybe a little bend in the passport constitutes damaged. The woman told me she would not be able to tell me without looking at it, I would have to take it to a passport office. I asked her if there was a passport office in Guelph. She said no, the nearest one was Kitchener. I asked if the post office in Guelph would know if it would be considered damaged. She said no, it would have to be an official passport person, and if I had the local post office look at my passport application, they would charge me $20, and even then, they would not be able to tell me if I had made any errors. So what exactly am I paying $20 for?
I then told the woman that I was happy that the form looked like it was accessible. Happy was an understatement. I was thrilled. But I said I'm an organized person and like to know my options, so I wondered what the process was for filling it out in braille. How do I order the braille? How long does it take to come? How do I respond to the questions? The woman acted as if I had thrown a handful of marbles at her head. I received a choppy string of "um um um um...uh..." followed by "We can't send you the braille application. You would have to pick it up at a passport office. And then someone would have to write your responses in."
This caused me to start laughing. I asked her if she was sure about this. She said yes. I said to her, "So you're telling me that you would ask blind people, people who cannot drive themselves, to travel to one of 13 cities in Ontario to pick up the braille application, it could not be ordered over the phone, and even if you could orderit over the phone, you would have to get a sighty to fill it out, so you may as well have not killed those trees to receive the braille form?" She just said, "yes." She didn't think for one second that this was ridiculous, or if she did, she didn't let it show. I told her that in fact the braille form, which is supposed to allow someone more independence, decreases it because you can't actually fill out the form yourself.
She did tell me that I would have to submit a note with the passport explaining why my eyes are dancing a jig in the picture, so I know that much, but when I tell you what I'm about to, maybe I should phone back and verify that detail.
After that ridiculous exchange, I decided once and for all that this needed a bloggin'. But as I told Steve about the ridiculousness of the whole thing, he wondered if it was true that you had to write your answers on a printed application, or could you have your sighty scribble your answers on the actual braille copy. This required another call into the passport folks.
Since I had been told that the call centre people couldn't order up a braille application, I thought the best course of action would be to phone the Kitchener passport office. I soon discovered that nowhere on the Passport Canada site can you find their phone number! I guess I'll have to phone the 1-800 number again.
When I asked the lady for the Kitchener number, she said she doesn't give it out, and even they only call it if it's urgent, what's the problem? So, I asked her questions about the braille application, at which point she responded with "What? Pick it up? No! We can order it for you! I'm looking at instructions right now on how I can do just such a thing!" Well, at least there's a shred of sense in this whole process. I asked her if she could enlighten the woman with which I spoke earlier, and in fact she said she could! Double awesome!
This woman continued to show her coolness by laughing at my joke about how she wouldn't want me driving to Kitchener if I wanted a braille application, even though you'd think some of the drivers on the road needed braille too. She couldn't believe the other woman didn't know the process by which call centre folks could order up a braill copy of the paperwork, and said it would be pretty ridiculous to make the very ones who couldn't drive take a journey to pick up the documents they required. But she also said someone would have to write on the application, and realized that was pretty dumb too.
This woman just kept getting better and better, because she said she didn't mind sitting there while I pulled up the application and went through it to find the places where it looked like it required information but there was no place to edit it. She asked me about screenreaders and how they worked, and didn't tell me to click on any big blue buttons! She even understood that telling me where something was on the screen, like left, middle, or right was not going to work. Can I give her a medal? She needs to be held up as an example of sheer awesomeness. I don't even have her name so I can state her name on the blog along with the words "you rock" so if you google her, you just might find that little piece.
She sat with me while I madly scrolled through the application. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the first spot that looked like a phantom edit field actually *wasn't* an edit field. It was intended to be scribbled upon after you print the application. It was one of those signature boxes with the date and the city in which it was signed. I have no problem getting a little sighted help to sign and date a form, hell I already need somebody to snap my photo so it's no trouble. But at least I can fill out the form myself!
I got through most of my questions, and she said if I had more questions, I could phone back. But she had the patience to look at places on the form that confused me and explain it. I thanked her profusely for being so awesome, and told her she was a breath of fresh air for me.
So, I hope this little description of how to renew a passport will help someone. Hopefully, I'll fill this baby out, submit it, and will be able to report that I got a new passport without any trouble. That would make me a pretty ecstatic woman.

Application forms are also available in Braille or in large print for persons with visual impairment.Hmmm. So how is this going to work? If I get a braille form, can I send back braille? Seriously? This is possible? The voice of reason told me no, the braille application is likely absurd, in that you would get a print application with it and someone would have to fill it out for you, thus rendering you less independent than you would have been if you tried to fill out the PDF, or just as dependent as you were if no braille option was available. I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the braille application, but if I can't respond in braille, then it's only a braille representation of the application. It's not a braille application. Granted, it would be good for braille users who can't read the pdf to have the instructions to read over themselves, but that's only marginally useful. Think about it. It's not really going to be saving them any time, since Joe Sighty who is required to fill out the form, if he's any good, will need to read the instructions over anyway.

Your Best Friend Can Be Shared
How did I miss this story? Oh well, better late than never.
I have talked about making sure things are in order for whatever guide dog I have after I died, but never in those arrangements would be a plan to have the dog buried with me, regardless of the dog's health. but that's exactly what Donald Ellis ordered for his pet tarrier. Yeah, his 2-year-old, completely healthy yorkshire tarrier.
Ellis's last request was that the dog, named Tom Tom, be buried with him, as noone else would love him as he did. The family took the pooch to a vet, who begged them to let the dog live. Then, fearing they would kill it in a less humane way, he euthenized the poor creature.
I'm sure Tom Tom was very special to Donald, and I'm sure he loved him with all his heart. But a new home for such a young, healthy dog can be found. It is as senseless as a suicidal parent killing a child along with them because they don't think the child would survive without them.
What a twisted last request.

Accessibility Shmaccessibility
If you're going to the University of Winnipeg, and you have a disability, things are about to get really hard really fast. Because they had a 20% increase in folks with disabilities enrolling, they decided to be boneheads and cut services with no regard for the students who need them. Services including notetaking and extra time for exams just went bye-bye.
I think this is disgusting. If students signed up with the understanding that those services were available, you can't just rip them out from under them. People don't get these services because they're lazy or like having them, they get them because they *need* them. They level the playing field. Without them, the students aren't getting a fair shot. You don't know if the reason they failed the course is because they don't have what it takes, or they didn't have access to the same materials as their peers. Trust me, having access to disability services is not equivalent to having grades handed to you on a silver platter, and people need to stop thinking like that. I think part of the reason folks think the cuts are acceptable is because of this attitude.
Allow me to rant for a second. I used to always here things like "Gee, I wish I could sit back and listen to a textbook instead of reading it. You have it so good." Oh yeah? Try spelling acetylcholine when you've never seen the damn word. Try understanding graphs when the person reading it doesn't understand them, and is trying their level best to interpret them, but is failing. I used to always get the comment "I wish I could have longer to do my exams." The reason I get longer is not so I can sit there and stare off into the sky and daydream. With highly visual material, I need every minute of that time to be able to process the data in the way that works for me. People say things like "How lucky you are, someone takes your notes for you." For the people who need them, they aren't lucky. If they get a sloppy notetaker, that's all they get for their notes. I took notes myself because for the most part I could, but some people have poor dexterity in their hands and can't keep up. So, they either try desperately just to write as fast as they can and lose the surrounding context of the notes they're taking, the whole reason for being in lecture, or they get notetakers to get down the details, allowing them to be able to focus on what the professor is saying. These things aren't luxuries, they are necessities, and to just flippantly cut them off speaks to a complete lack of understanding of what accessibility is.
I love how the vice-president says the cuts are only temporary. Tell that to the students who fail because they don't have the supports they need. Are you going to pay for their second attempt at these courses? No? Didn't think so. Temporary cuts can cause permanent consequences.
If this was an Ontario university, I would say take them to the Ontario Human Rights Commission. But I'm sure Manitoba has a similar commission. Also, I would network with NEADS (National Educational
Association of Disabled Students) through their discussion list to see if you can get some ideas on how to deal with this. Two things you should not do are sit back and do nothing, and think you are alone. You are not. Make your voice heard and take control of your education. Let the university know this is not acceptable.

Talk About Your Back-Handed Compliment!
I've been told in the past that I'm so young and pretty, what a waste that I'm blind, but I heard a close second tonight.
I went out to this weird sing-along thingy that was happening at a restaurant in Guelph. I thought, as I was going, how is this going to work? We're at a restaurant, so we feel incline to buy things to eat and drink. But we're singing! Do you chow down in the songs you don't know well?
The trick is to arrive early, eat, and then sing. We arrived early, but didn't get served until the singing was starting.
Anyway, the reason for this long and winding ramble was I was going there with a friend I met through the French meetup group. She was meeting some other friends there who I didn't know. One of them, at the end of the night, whipped this gem out on me. "Um, er, I didn't know you were sight-impaired. I would never have known, you're so beautiful!"
As much as I found it flattering to be called beautiful, the sentence rattled around my head like a pinball.
Hmmm. So, blind people are ugly? We're all disgusting to look upon? Did the sight of our beastly faces cause our eyes to lose the will to live? Or do we all rock violently, poking our eyes deeper and deeper into their sockets? Or, are we missing the eyes in the sockets and we hadn't heard of prosthetic eyes yet? What exactly does this woman think the average blind person looks like?
As the ricocheting continued, she seemed to be trying to assess just how blind I was. She could not grasp that I did, in fact, not see any better in the day than at night. "What do you see right now?" she asked me. "A blob in the general area where your face should be. I only know it's your face, because words are coming out of it." This didn't seem to sit very well with her, but I figured I had to get as basic as possible to make her understand blind. She kept insisting that I must see better in the day. No, ma'am, I don't. It is what it is. Maybe I'll see a shadow from slightly further away, but it has no greater detail in the day than at night.
Then she reached for Trixie, even though she had been warned not to, and was surprised when I pulled Trixie back to my side. "She looked at me!" she protested. So you're saying that you, a woman in your fifties, have no more self-control than a 5-year-old lab? I guess that shows in the comment above that started this whole winding path of thought.
It's funny. Each of those things on their own could be considered an oopsy, an awkward moment, or harmless questions. But when you put them together, they paint a great big picture of ignorance.

Robert Mask's obit
The other day, when I talked about Robert Mask's sudden death, I said I had one heck of a time finding his obituary. Another fellow is also searching for it, because he found us. Someone from the WebAIM list I love so much actually dug the obituary up for me. Thank you, thank you so much. Here it is, in case others are looking for it.
MASK, Robert Jerome James : Of Elora, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, Ontario in his 37th year. Remaining to forever cherish Robert's memory are his loving wife Brandy (Swain) and children Gavan (5 yrs) and Ashley (10 mos). Survived by his parents Jerome and Ann Mask of Renfrew, Ontario, brothers Kristopher (Tania) and James (Stephanie) and grandparents Anthony and Agnes Mask. Fondly remembered by aunts and uncles, cousins, niece and nephew. Sadly missed by his in-laws Dave and Jan Swain, Kingston, Ontario, numerous friends throughout Fergus/Elora, Monsanto work colleagues and hockey team mates. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Renfrew Ontario on Tuesday September 28th at 10:30 am. Funeral luncheon to follow at the Renfrew Armouries. A Celebration of Robert's life will take place in Elora, Ontario at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Mcmaster Children's Hospital. (www.mcmasterchildrenshospital.ca)So there it is. I really hope that thing in Elora happens, because I'd like to go to something, and Elora is a lot closer than Renfrew!

MLB Still Mostly Hates Canada, But Somehow We Got Something Nice Out Of Them This Time
Seems myrantfrom back in May about the Jays getting shafted by the Major League Baseball schedule makers when it comes to holidays had quite a bit of impact. And by quite a bit, I of course mean pretty well diddly fuck all.
According tothis post from Drunk Jays Fansthat I'm going by because it's here and saves me looking up the schedule myself, here are some of the highlights...if you want to call them that.
Things start out a little promisingly on the May 24 weekend. The Jays are home for a weekend interleague series against the Houston Astros. Ok scratch that, make that a part of the weekend series, because on the holiday Monday itself, they're playing in New York.
The August long weekend's holiday Monday actually fairs even worse, if you can believe that. The Jays aren't playing an afternoon game on the road. They aren't playing a night game on the road. Hell, they aren't even playing a ridiculously late west coast game. They aren't playing at goddamn all, for flaming ass shrapnel's sake! How does stuff like this happen? Who schedules an off day on a holiday, even if it's a Canadian one? Does the Blue Jays front office not have a say in any of this, or has the Rogers mentality of not giving jack fuck about customers rubbed off on this team even more?
But wait, what's this? Home games? On Canada Day weekend? All of it? And they're home games against the Phillies? that, I must admit, is pretty cool. It doesn't make up for the dump that's been dropped on our heads otherwise, but still, I'll happily take it. I'm sure there will be some kind of ceremony to honour Roy Halladay like there was supposed to be last time before our fabulous Conservative government made the equally fabulous decision to host the G20 in Toronto, leading to this season's series between the two being moved out of town and country. That'll be a nice moment I'm sure. Wonder what the odds are we'll actually get to see Doc pitch. Ok, I'm probably asking for too much there. I'm just happy we get a holiday home game for once. Maybe I had a tiny bit of impact after all. Yeah, I don't think so either. I'm sure it was an accident.

NFL Vs. NHL
If you're like me, ... well, first of all you have my sympathies, but more to the point of this post, you're an NHL fan with only a limited understanding of the NFL. But if unlike me you're interested in understanding the NFL a bit better,Down Goes Brown's hockey fan's guide to the NFLis for you. Even if you don't care about the NFL it's still for you, because it's gold.
The Word Of The Day Is The.
For as long as we've been tracking how people get here and what they're looking for to get them here, our top keyword has had a story behind it. With our old tracker, our top keyword was "Randy". This was caused by the flurry of folks looking for Randy Orton's penis. For a while, it was "herbal". This happened when I made fun of the spam I received from the "herbal king". After the Jonathan G. Parker explosion, it was Jonathan. Then I posted about the suicide of Motty Borger, and holy hell, Borger shot to the top in record time. There was always a story, a reason for the new top keyword.
But today, Steve looked and said we had a new top keyword. I couldn't believe this was possible. No crazy new thing had been climbing at a rate that would allow it to take over top spot. Do you want to know what this mover and shaker is? It is...
...
"The"! Seriously. Our new top keyword is "the". We are going to be stuck with the most boring top keyword ever until something can come along and knock it down. Of all the words people could type into google, the one most often in queeries that leads them to us is "the". Snore. Now I'm hoping for a search explosion of something, anything, so we aren't stuck with "the" as our highest-ranking keyword for too long. Now that I've said that, "and" will shoot right up there.

I've Got The Stink Foot!
I don't know what it is these last few years, but good god, my feet stink! No, if you tell me my feet stink, I won't pick up a knife and stab you. I know they do, and it's just the way it is.
I don't know if it started when I got Trix and started walking faster, but I remember one day when Trix was pretty new and my folks came for a visit, and I came home and took off my sandals. I got Trix a nylabone and she was chewing on it, and mom said "I guess...it's the bone that smells." No, mom, it's my shoes. Those bones don't smell like anything.
So, realizing that good god my sandals must honk, I tried to wash them. No, that didn't do me any good. Eventually, my sandals got a hole in the sole, so they had to go. But that's when I started to notice that my feet made my shoes smell.
Another thing I seem to do more now is ware down my shoes. I admit that I've had this same set of running shoes for 3 years, but I've never seen shoes do the things they do now that I have Trix. I looked at my shoes, and noticed that a piece of the heel was starting to peel off, making them quite leaky. Since I have small feet and need to fit orthotic arch support thingamabobs in my shoes, I hate getting new shoes because it's such an ordeal. So, I decided I'd take these suckers to the shoe repair man to see if he could patch them up.
The night before I was to take them in, it dawned on me! I have stinky shoes! I certainly do not want to inflict that on the shoe repair man. Ug! So, I decided to spray Febreeze in them. It's supposed to be awesome stuff that has the power to get rid of those pesky odours, so why the hell not put it to the test?
I took my shoes, and spray spray sprayed them. Then I left them to dry. When I sniffed them to see how it had done, I found that my shoes just smelled like stinky shoes that now also smelled like Febreeze. Damn it!
I took them to the guy, and apologized in advance for their stink. I told him I'd even Febreezed them, but it didn't do any good. He just laughed and said not to worry, shoes are shoes. I guess it couldn't have been too bad, because he did manage to glue that heel piece back down and didn't say anything.
Damn me and my stinky feet. But maybe that's a good thing. The shoe thief wouldn't even get to the point of trying to fit his feet in my shoes. He'd just know those weren't his by the stink! It would be pretty funny to watch him try to stick his big feet in my little shoes, though. Another friend has done that before.
Incidentally, the other day I wanted to find the original place where I explained where Shoe got his name, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's in a comment thread, but which one? I even looked through the thread of doom! Does anyone remember?

The Kids Take Plastic Now!
The other day, I saw a sign of the changing times.
I was heading for the bus when a kid stopped me and said "Hi, do you want to buy a magazine to support my school?" My first response was no, since I can't very well read print magazines, and even if I could, I didn't have any cash on me. He would not be deterred. "You could buy a gift for a friend for Christmas, and we take credit cards."
Pardon? The school kids are taking credit cards? Credit...cards? I think when I sold chocolate bars for school, I took cash and that was it. Did I take cheques? I don't remember ever telling someone who to make the cheque out to, so I'm pretty sure it was cash. Or, they'd fill out an order form, but they would still pay cash. Now, little Johnny is accepting Visa!
The little guy looked so sad, and so determined to tell me all about all the zillion types of subscriptions he had that I felt guiltier and guiltier that I couldn't think of someone who would want a magazine subscription, and because of that, he was going to go the extra mile for absolutely nothing. I even phoned Steve and asked if he knew someone who would want some kind of magazine subscription. Nope, he couldn't think of anyone, so I had to say no. I felt even worse when the little guy said he hadn't had a lot of folks buy magazines.
I missed the bus because I let the little guy read to me, so I guess he's not the only one who didn't really benefit from this conversation. But I didn't want to run off on the little guy. It's a kid! You can't give the brush-off to a kid, unless he's being rude or something.
But it scares me that kids are taking visa now! I personally think I would rather just give the school kid cash. Or maybe they're not actually taking credit cards, and this kid learned from that last kid who ripped me off. Maybe they all think I'm an easy mark. I don't want to think that's what's going on.

There Goes A Life Of Crime Down The Toilet
As we grow from children to teenagers and eventually into adults, our parents teach us many valuable things. One of the most important yet somehow overlooked among them is always go to the bathroom before you leave the house. If you don't, they tell you, you're going to have to go at a bad time and it's going to mess up your day.
If onlySaid Oruczadeh, 23, and Derek Mandeville, 21had listened to those wise words, one of them may have avoided needing to answer nature's call in the middle of a burglary, which would have meant no toilet flush as the homeowner returned, which would have meant not being followed by that very same homeowner and taken down by police moments later with over $9000 worth of jewellery. It also would have saved them being arraigned on third-degree burglary, second-degree larceny and conspiracy charges.
the pair is scheduled to be back in court on October 7th, and in the meantime bond has been set at $25000. That's one expensive wiz.

More Training Tales At Training Tails
Here's another blog to read, if you just can't get enough of reading about other people's guide dog training experiences. Jenny has decided she wants to recap both her training experiences she had with her previous guides, and talk about the process she's going through to prepare for guide dog no. 3. There isn't much there yet, But I'm sure this will be very full very soon. Whenever she gets going, she always cracks me up.
So if you're interested, check out training tails. Har har har.

Mr. Lorenzo's Oil Has Been Sentenced
Remember Nicholas Lorenzo? The guy at the Safeway who was showin' off a little non-deli meat? Well, he's been sentenced. Five years of probation, sex offender treatment, and 48 hours of community service. Just don't have him making sandwiches during that time.
I admit I've never been struck by the urge to play with myself at a deli counter, but this sentence stated by his lawyer stands out to me. "He has been expressing and continues to express his desire to discover why this occurred."
Why? It's like he doesn't know why he does certain things, as if there's another force controlling him. Super weird.
You almost feel sorry for him when he says he doesn't want to cause anyone any more pain. What a sad little man.

Scrub Your Dog And Help Scrub Out Rabies!
Do you live in Guelph? Do you have a dog in need of a bath? Who knew you could wash your dog for a cause? At Royal City Grooming Centre, my favourite dog-bathing spot, you can.
They're raising money to support a world rabies prevention campaign by Veterinarians Without Borders. Less rabies is always good, so if you have a dirty dog, bring him or her on down from 1 until 4 tomorrow! Trix isn't in need of a scrub, but if she were, we'd so do it.

Thirty-six Years Old Is Too Young
It's news like this that makes me sit back and think about life.
I just got a call from my dad to say that Robert Mask, one of my brother's best friends and a kid we grew up with, passed away. He was playing hockey, and then he was gone. He was 36, and has a young family. I'm trying to find out all the details about services, but Thompson Collins Funeral Home's website needs some serious accessibility work. None of the links appear to go where they should. I'm trying to get Robert Mask's obituary, but I keep getting Robert Howard's book of memories! I would also love to subscribe to email updates if they're just for when the service will be for Robert Mask, but I can't. Maybe that's for the best, because they could be updates on anyone who has passed away, and I don't need that. It appears the culprit is ill-formed Javascript. The whole menu is not keyboard-navigable. At least I found the funeral home's phone number.
He and my brother used to play together all the time. I remember the year they, along with another friend or two, made a Ghost Busters costume and home-made replicas of the ghost-busting gear. They put a lot of work into that project. He was over at our house so much that when mom would get us to stand against the kitchen wall to see how much we'd grown and make those little marks in the wall for each of us, he would do it too. Man, his marks were always way higher than ours. It must have looked funny to people who didn't know who was who.
And there was that one time when my brother really wanted him to stay for supper. He stayed a lot, so I guess my brother was sure that he'd have no problem getting mom to say yes. So, he thought he could just invite him over after school and get him to hide behind the couch when mom got home while my brother asked if he could come over. Keep in mind that Rob is a tall kid, so that's pretty hard to do. But that night, she said she wasn't sure about having him over, it was a busy night or something, at which point my brother said "Ok Rob, I guess you'll have to go home, and out Rob came." We all had a good laugh at big Rob hiding behind the couch. I'm sure he stayed for dinner, because mom couldn't really tell him to scram after that. But she explained to my brother that that wasn't cool...after she stopped laughing.
I ran into him once while I was here in Guelph. He lived in a little town near here, and he happened to run into Steve and I and some friends when we were heading to a restaurant downtown. He gave me a hand and then told me who he was. It was pretty cool to see him after so long.
What a shock for his wife and kids. Neither of the kids will have many memories if any of their dad. It just goes to show you never know when your time will come. Everybody, live life to the fullest!

CFRU's Ongoing 2010 Guelph Municipal Election Coverage
CFRU,the station on which I used to pollute the airwaves on a regular basis, has launched its 2010 Guelph municipal election coverage. They've done a great job on this in the past, so if you're looking for a good source for interviews and information on the upcoming vote, give them a try. The full press release is below.
CFRU 93.3fm’s dedicated municipal election radio show, aptly called Municipal Election Radio, will take place every Tuesday morning from 7-9 a.m. starting September 14. The show, co-hosted by Royal City Rag’s Jan Hall, The Working Week’s Scotty Hertz and former host of Gen X for Gen Y, Oliver Rockside will discuss election issues, profile candidates, cover the debates, as well as report from the campaign trail. We will also be live from the River Run Centre on election night, October 25.
Voteguelph.ca will be the online home for all of CFRU93.3fm’s municipal election coverage. On our website you will find all the audio from our radio shows including information on candidates, discussion of issues, debates, news from the campaign trail and interviews.
As part of our coverage we will be extending an invitation to all of the mayoral candidates for an interview on Municipal Election Radio. We regret that we are unable to invite individual ward candidates in for a full interview however we will be assigning a reporter to cover each individual ward race and hope to include some audio from the ward races as part of our radio coverage.
Campaign For Municipal Election Financial Transparency
As part of our election coverage we are asking all candidates whether they are willing to report contributions to their campaign before the election takes place on October 25. The current Municipal Act requires only that all donations greater than $100 are recorded and reported in a financial statement, however that information is only made public long after the election has taken place.
http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/AssetFactory.aspx?did=7269
We do not believe that this is in the public interest. To ensure election transparency, we believe the information on who is donating to individual campaigns should be available to the public before they go to the polls.
We also do not believe it is appropriate that municipal election candidates accept donations from corporations and unions, groups that are not eligible voters. Campaign donations from corporations and unions have already been barred in Toronto.
We are therefore asking ALL candidates in the election to answer the following questions:
1. Are you willing to make all donations to your campaign greater than $100 public during the election campaign period rather than requiring citizens to wait for the post-election financial report?
2. Will you be accepting donations from corporations?
3. Will you be accepting donations from unions?
4. If you are willing to make all donations to your campaign greater than $100 public during the election campaign period, how will you make this information available to the public?
5. In other municipalities, 10 days before election day, candidates will disclose via their website or Facebook page, all contributions received up until 2 weeks before election day. Do you support this for Guelph?

Directions For Me
This is a great idea.
DirectionsForMe.orgis a new site created by Horizons for the Blind that aims to offer accessible package information for many different products. It will provide preparation and use directions, ingredient lists and nutritional information among other things. The database is searchable and also browsable by category in case you don't quite know what you're looking for or just want to look around. It even includes a fairly sizeable beer section and a quick search reveals that a few entries for Moosehead and Sleeman are listed, so these people are fine by me.
I can definitely see myself using this and it coming in quite handy, so give it a look.

Thanks To You, We're One Of The Top 30 Vision Impaired Blogs On The Internet This Year!

Medical Billing
What do you know, it turns out somebody likes us!
Dear Steve,
Congratulations! Sarah here, and your blog, Vomit Comet, was determined to be one of the best blogs to exude overall brilliance. And so, it has received our 2010 Top 30 Vision Impaired Blogs award presented by Medical Billing and Coding!
You can see your name amongst our winners here at:
www.medicalbillingandcoding.org/top_vision_impaired.
Winners were chosen through a scoring system that included Internet nominations, which came from your reader base!
I assume that this would be the part of our reader base that only calls us names for fun. Thank you, reader base, for thinking that much of us. Looking at the winners list we appear to be in some pretty good company, and to be honest I'm not entirely sure how we got there. But in any case, I'm sure I can speak for Carin and even AWOL Matt when I say that we're all flattered that there are folks out there who think enough of us to put us in such a fine group.
If you'd like to read a bit more about the awards, you can gohere.
Thanks again to everybody who reads this stuff, and a special thanks to whoever it was who nominated us.
Do Some Call Him The Gangster Of Divorce Lawyerin'?
This, from what I understand, is a completely serious ad for Florida lawyer Steve Miller's DivorceEZ service. sure beats the hell out of all those "Bernard Shapiro got me a huge cash settlement!" commercials we generally see all the time.
And for anybody who got the Richard Jeni reference in that last sentence, I tried to find the bit, but somehow it appears to be nowhere. Please internet, right this wrong!

Smells Like Rockin' Robin
This is completely stupid, but I chuckled, so up it goes.Smells Like Rockin' Robin, a mashup of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Michael Jackson's version of Rockin' Robin.
Make It 50!
If you were one of those who followed my year in the wrestling prediction contest, you're well aware that my prognostication abilities aren't always the best. but before the Jays Mariners series started, I made a prediction to the Shoe Thief. I told him that not only would Jose Bautista hit his 50th home run this week, but he'd be nice enough to give old Shoe some time to worry about it.
"He'll hit the homer off of Felix Hernandez on Thursday," I said.
And guess what just happened. If you said Jose Bautista came up in the bottom of the 1st inning and hit number 50 off of Felix Hernandez, you win! And you're probably a lot happier about it than our footwear lifting friend, because unlike him, you don't have tokiss a dude because you doubted that dude's months old proclamation.
And Mr. thief, if you're reading this, yes, that voicemail with all the kissy noises in it is indeed from Carin and I. There's no need to thank us, we're just nice people like that.
On a serious note, congrats, Jose! You've had a hell of a season in every possible way, and you've come a long way from the guy who once played on 5 teams in the space of a year to what you are now. Things like what you've done this year are why I still enjoy watching sports. I hope you're a Blue Jay for years to come.

It's A Wing. Don't Fly Off The Handle.
People are nuts. There's a restaurant called Big Shot Bob's that sells 100 flavours of wings. Apparently, somebody saw the black on black crime flavour, and lost it. Without asking a few basic questions, they spread the story like mad, and people are making threatening phone calls to the restaurant, saying they'll go out of business.
If they had asked a few questions, they would have found out that the flavour was invented, and named, by a black customer. But oh no, asking questions is not what these people do.
What kills me about this story is we have had suicide wings for years. But nobody gets all up in arms about that. That's just fine. They shouldn't get up in arms about it, nor should they flip their lids about this one either. I don't know what it is about wing flavours. They're wacky, and that's all there is to it.
But now they've changed the wing flavour to "Big Fine Woman 2000", a name selected by the original complaining customer. Uh-huh. That name makes no sense, but that's beside the point. How long until someone thinks that's a slam against fat women?

I Hate To Split Hairs, But This Ain't A Splitter!
Remember when I was ragging on HumanWare and I said I was afraid the power-splitter would arrive sans end? Well, yesterday, my fears were realized. What I got was a doo dad that would hook into the charger, leading out to three even wires. None of them had the cable connector required to connect splitter to PDA.
I'm going to open up the manual and quote the description of the splitter.
I even asked if when using this splitter, all three parts could be charged, and he said yes! How dishonest!
For now, my old end is working, but I'm going to find a new one, and when I do, I will say where I found it so others don't have to go through this.
I'm going to open up the manual and quote the description of the splitter.
Power Splitter (used to charge the GPS receiver, External Speaker or PDA at the same time)Well, this one sure won't because no end will interface with the PDA! So, it's not that I misquoted the part. If I ask for a power-splitter, that should mean all of the splitter should come.

Not So Breaking News: Fools In Sports Ruin Something That Would Have Been A Lot Of Fun
Well, so much for that Anderson Silva Chael Sonnen rematch Iwanted.I was supposed to be getting it on January 1st, at least that's the way it looked until yesterday when word officially came down thatSonnen's testosterone-to-estrogen ratio was too high, which usually means steroid use, which means that he's been suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Commission, which means that no other commissioned state will let him fight either, which means no rematch for a while.
It also, most importantly to me, means another great thing ruined by somebody who doesn't have enough faith in his own abilities to compete honestly. Spare me all of the the only reason athletes use these drugs is because everybody else is doing it so they get sucked into the system in order to stay competitive garbage, because that's exactly what that is. There may be some truth to it, but it's only that way because coaches, leagues, fellow athletes, a segment of the sports fanbase and people's insecurities allow it to be. And if you think I'm wrong when I lump leagues and fans in there, do you honestly think that if governments hadn't gotten involved that there would be testing? And I don't mean we have a program that we aren't willing to comment on or open up to public scrutiny type testing like TNA Wrestling has, I mean serious testing. The answer is of course not, because sporting organizations think, and they aren't entirely wrong, that there's no money in something that doesn't feature ridiculous accomplishments.
Maybe I'm over simplifying things here, but as a sports fan I've always been of the opinion that if you're not good enough at what you're doing to be able to do it PED free, then you need to find a new job/hobby. I wish more people thought like me for real, because these drugs are ruining everything. They're ruining people's reputations, their health and whatever passes for integrity in sports, and I've about had enough of it. I've also about had enough of fans shitting all over a guy when his test results come out while simultaneously shitting all over clean people who can't live up to expectations set by that very same drug user. Seriously, that's just ridiculous, and it's a big part of why things won't start to change until we as fans get a new attitude.
When I first heard the Sonnen failure rumour on Sunday, I gave some fairly serious thought to giving up on MMA forever much like I've all but stopped following boxing for a number of reasons (drugs are far from the only problem there). I realize that athletes are only humans, but I'm sick of these humans disappointing me. Humans or not and like it or not, they're held to a higher standard than the rest of us. I'm parting with my money and time to watch what is being represented to me as a fair contest, and that's not what I'm getting. If a restaurant repeatedly serves me terrible food I'm going to stop going there, and eventually I fear that sports are going to become the same way for me. I didn't give up on MMA much like I haven't given up on wrestling for some reason even though it's arguably worse than any athletic type event with the possible exception of bodybuilding, but my reaction to this Sonnen thing makes me feel like that day is coming. I hope it doesn't, but each sports test failure makes me a little bit angrier and a little less willing to let it go and say it's just another stupid athlete. It's the old fool me once thing. Eventually I'm the stupid one for wasting my time and getting suckered into believing people who say they want to clean things up. I don't like feeling stupid. It isn't fun. It isn't fun in much the same way that supporting people who make a bigger game out of beating the system to get half a second faster at something than they make of the actual game isn't fun anymore.
When Sonnen Silva II eventually goes down I'll most likely be watching, but it'll now be more because that's what I do than because I'm truly looking forward to it. Thanks for ruining something nice, Chael.

Kindling Fear On The Bus
Hey there Lahcen Qouchbane. When you're driving a bus, your eyes and concentration are supposed to be on the road, not on a Kindle. Read when you're not driving a large bus full of people through morning traffic, thank ya very much.
I guess someone took the cell phone video, at which point the driver tried to say taking video of the bus driver was forbidden. They didn't buy it, and the video went viral. Now TriMet fired him *again*. He was fired years ago for pushing a passenger, but an arbitrator got him his job back. I bet the arbitrator feels like an arse now.
This happened in Gresham. That's where GDB's Oregon classes go to do the bulk of their work. I wonder if any GDB students or staff were on the bus that morning.
I'm glad they fired him, although it looks like they didn't have much of a choice. Hopefully he stays fired this time.

The Man Has No Chance, The Parrot Will Talk
Damn it I wish I had a name on this guy who was shaking the hell out of a parrot. I have to wonder if it's Jim Eggers and the parrot was his service bird. I'm sorry, that was mean. Or maybe the bird was one of those lookout birds. Either way, the poor bird. I'm glad folks called 911.
What Would They Do With A Phone Or A TV?
I saw something that made me chuckle yesterday.
I was coming home from picking up some stuff downtown. As I approached the door of our building, I heard the buzzer pad's dial tone coming on and off, on and off. I thought "Oh boy, we have some poor souls who don't know how to work the buzzer." My parents were like that. They couldn't figure out that when they buzzed me, it would make my phone ring. So when I would pick up and say hello, my dad would almost have a canary. "Let me in! I'm buzzing you!" Well, you're coming through the phone there dude, and we don't know right off that it's you!
I walked through the door, and noticed that every time the dial tone would come on, these guys would yell numbers at the buzzer pad. Dudes, it has a phone keypad. Use the phone keypad! The weird part was they'd figured out that # turns on a dial tone and * turns it off, because they were turning it on and off. So I told them to hit # and then dial the person's number. Amazingly, that worked.
But it didn't end there. They began speaking a foreign language to the woman who answered the phone, and she sounded as confused as they did. Does her buzzer never go off?
Finally, they got through, and joined me on the elevator, at which point the hilarity continued. I told them I wanted the sixth floor, and asked them what floor they were going to. I sometimes ask this so I can figure out if they're getting off before me so I don't lose count of the clicks for each floor. They said they were going to the sixth floor too. While they were talking to me, they were feverishly hitting the elevator button for some floor. Guys, we're moving, and repeatedly banging a button for a floor doesn't make the elevator move any faster. Have you never seen either a buzzer *or* an elevator before?
Then we arrived at the fifth floor, at which point one of them said "This is 5" and they all got off. What the?
I don't know why that amused me so much, but I had to chuckle. People and technology can be so funny.

Mommy, What's The Hurry?
I wonder how many times Erica Fay Anderson has robbed a bank. I mean, she managed to rob the bank, then pick up her kids from school. Unfortunately for her, someone described her car and got her plate number, and police were waiting for her when she came home with her little girls.
It looks like the kids will be having a long sleepover in foster care for now.

Come See The Pantsless Side Of Sears
This onefits into a couple of wacky categories, so it seems as good a way as any to start off the morning.
A 47-year-old man identified only as Miller probably due to a slight mess-up on the part of the Rock Hill, South Carolina Herald was arrested Monday afternoon when police found him naked from the waste down in a Sears parking lot taking pictures of himself with his cellphone. When asked what he was doing and why pants weren't involved in it, Miller told the officers that "I was trying to get a tan." He now faces charges of indecent exposure and bond has been set at $20,000.
But our story doesn't end with the utilization of the do it yourself tag. As it turns out, Miller resides on Naked Creek Road in the town of Conover, North Carolina. And for extra points, the article telling his story was penned by one Kimberly Dick.
Yes, I do believe we have a winner.

Acidface, I Got An Acidface, And It Is Bleeding Bleeding Bleeding Bloody Gone
Well it looks like the charges are starting to come down for Bethany Storro. They're starting with theft. I'm sure there'll be more.
She seems like she really took advantage of folks, spending some of the money on bills for earlier laser facial peels, dinner for her parents, and clothes.
The idea that she has tried smeering drain cleaner on her face to kill herself just sounds horrible.
Now she's in a whole heap of trouble. I hope she can come out the other side ok.

Does This Make Me A Bad Canadian?
I think my utter disdain for all things winter is starting to take over my life. Actually I know it is, because just the mere fact that it is currently fall is causing me great amounts of annoyance and sorrow. It's been this way for years and it gets worse and worse with each trip through the calendar, but I think it might finally be getting a little out of hand.
The other day I was skimming the sports news when a thought struck me. "aww fuck, it's nearly fucking hockey season again! What bullshit!" there may have been a few more expletives in there, but that's pretty much how it went. Even writing that out again I still can't believe I thought it, but I still think it if that makes any sense at all. Let me try to explain.
I don't know about the rest of you, but to me it feels like hockey season just ended, and when it was nearing its end I was telling everybody who would listen to me that it was going on way too long. My argument was that when it's 27 and sunny outside, it's time to pack up the sticks and pucks, melt the ice like has happened outdoors and call it a day. We should not still be playing hockey in June, that's just a tiny bit ridiculous. I should have known at that point that there was trouble on the horizon, but amazingly, even among some of the hockey people I know, this line of reasoning met with little to no resistance, so I guess I can see how I thought I was completely in the right. In my world the end of hockey means the beginning of summer, a season superior to that steaming vat of horse leavings known as winter in almost every way. And if the end of hockey means the start of summer, then it only makes sense that the start of it means summer's over, and soon you'll be slogging through that fucking white crap to get anywhere and freezing your jingleberries off while you're doing it. And since cold weather and that white crap are two of the banes of my existence, my brain has begun to turn on something I actually enjoy, hence the "aww fuck, it's nearly hockey season again!" reaction I had.
I understand aww fuck it's Christmas and not caring so much about my birthday anymore, but I'm a little concerned that my all-consuming hatred for half a year's worth of Canadian climate is causing me to turn on fun things like watching hockey and drinking Canadian Club. Granted, watching baseball and drinking Canadian Club can be done outside in good weather, but still, I really do like hockey and there's a lot of hope for the Leafs this year, so I should be excited that starting tonight there are preseason games on TV again. But you know what? I'm not. I just can't get worked up about it, not in a positive way at least. I'm sure I'll come around eventually, but tonight, even though as of Sunday they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, I'll be watching the Jays. And even if there was no Jose Bautista gunning for more than 50 home runs, I'd probably still be watching them while flipping now and then to the Yankees and the Rays. I'm sure at some point I'll check in on the Leafs or if nothing else watch the highlights, but at the rate things are going I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to think about hockey without sobbing uncontrollably.
I either need to move or get help of some sort, because there's no way that snow and cold should be able to ruin me like this. I know it tests the will of just about everyone to an extent, but I'm starting to worry about me just a little.

A Name Does Not Indicate You're A Man Of God
The story of Shelby Marwan Heggs wanting to change his name kind of reminds me of this old joke.
I understand why a man with a name like Shelby would want to change it. Have you met any other male Shelbys? But why in hell would he want to change it to Saint Jody Almighty Bedrock? Oh, he says it's so you know you're talking to a man of god. Hmmm. If I met a guy named Saint Jody Almighty Bedrock, and I knew he hung that handle on himself, the only thing I would know was that I was talking to a nutcase.
Prosecutors aren't down with the request for a name-change because a. he's still facing aggrovated battery charges, and b. he has previous convictions for DUI and Marijuana possession. They think he's trying to hide from his past.
This makes me ask a question. I understand them not being down with him changing his name while a charge is pending, but can someone convicted of stuff never change their name for any reason? Can't the system just make the convictions hop on over to his new name and continue to follow him? I mean, he's changing his name through the courts. I know one governmental arm doesn't know what the other is doing half the time, but it doesn't seem that hard that someone's past in the system couldn't just come along for the ride.
But honestly. That name is just nuts. I hope, if he ever marries, he would not saddle his wife and kidlets with that handle.

Unintentional Bee Beard
Poor Lamar LaCaze. Poor poor guy. After that, I think I would have to mow the lawn in a snowsuit.
He was just mowing the lawn, when it happened. He must have struck one hell of a nest of bees, because he got 1200 stings. Ow ow ow ow oo oo ee ee.
I love the phrasing "When his son called him back, Mr LaCaze managed to tell him that he was "in bees"." Yeah, in bees sounds about right when you hear this description.
This little additional detail also makes me shiver all over.
Ug. That poor guy.

When Mr LaCaze was found by his son, he was slumped over a fence and covered by the swarming bees.Ow ow ow ow ow ow eek.
"His head was black, solid bees," he said.
"It looked like a bee hive on his head."
This little additional detail also makes me shiver all over.
Hospital staff managed to pull more than 1200 stingers from his body, as well as whole bees from his ears, nose, mouth and throat.*shudder*. It also reminds me of that episode of Machines of Malice where they described the bee basket. You bastards. I watched this son of a bitch to make sure it was the right video.
Ug. That poor guy.
Checking The Male
I have to wonder if this guy has since moved to Chicago.
Gary Preston Ades wanted to have a shower, but he also wanted to check for mail. He thought nobody was outside, so just sauntered out to the mailbox buck naked.
There were in fact many people outside, including five little girls, who he turned to face.
This isn't the first time he's been asked to please not pop out of his house in the nude. He has come to his door, and gone for the mail, in nothin' but his birthday suit before.
Well, if he starts mowing the lawn in the nude, playing with himself in his driveway, or sticking pictures of his stuff on people's cars, we have a pretty good idea it's the same guy.

Making It Easy For Cops
If you've stolen a car, do you think it's a good idea to drive around with your arm out the window with music pounding? Preston Renninger did, now he's in jail.
I guess it was partly bad timing. Police were taking a report of a stolen car from Sergio Vial. As they were putting the info out to other cops, one of them just happened to see that car driving by, music pounding, dude's arm out the window. They pulled it over, Vial came and identified his car, and said he didn't know the dude driving it. The dude went to jail.
At least he made it easier for Sergio Vial to get his car back.

Ask Jeeves And Ye Shall Receive...Unless You Ask Him These Questions
Well, it looks like Ask Jeeves has been around for 10 years. To celebrate, they dug up the top ten questions Ask Jeeves could not answer. They are:
1. What is the meaning of life?Amazingly the question "when the fuck are they going to cure herpes?" was never asked of Jeeves. I guess that was reserved for us and only us.
2. Is there a God?
3. Do blonds have more fun?
4. What is the best way to lose weight?
5. Is there anybody out there?
6. Who is the most famous person in the world?
7. What is love?
8. What is the secret to happiness?
9. Did Tony Soprano die?
10. How long will I live?
Cutting Remarks Should Not Lead To Being Cut
Is it me, or are people's tempers getting shorter and shorter? I mean, we have the whole food feuds tag full of people snapping over various food items not being available. Now, we know that you shouldn't tell Dallas Amber Smith that her feet smell, or she might stab you in the back. Seriously.
It all started with a pack of kids watching movies and drinking. Then she bragged that she could do a flip off anything. So, a friend dared her to flip off the deck. She tried it, and failed. Then a guy said that her feet smelled, and she responded by wrestling with him, then stabbing him as she walked out. One of his lungs collapsed as a result of the stabbing.
Um, eek. Everybody needs to calm down. a comment about stinky feet should not cause someone to stab someone in the back.

Wanna Influence Some More Ontario Disability-Related Legislation?
Last year, I mentioned the accessible built environment standard. Well, this year, it's time to give comment on the integrated accessibility regulation. This is the employment, transportation and information and communications standards smushed together into one big fat ol' standard. Read it and comment by October 16. If that comment link doesn't work, there should be one you can click on yourself where they give you directions on how to comment by mail, phone, TTY, or email.
I'm not impressed that websites only have to comply to Level A of WCAG 2.0 for years and years, which is the most basic level of accessibility. But I can hope that more will strive for Double A sooner than that. At least this legislation is making folks think about accessibility more seriously.
So go read it, and share your thoughts.

You Still Have To Be Fair, Even To Drunk Drivers
I'm generally one of the first to argue that there's no such thing as a drunk driving law that's too tough, but what British Columbia isdoingis seriously testing the limits of that point of view.
It's that last bit I have a problem with. Making people who are stupid enough to get behind the wheel when they have no business being there pay for that stupidity, yeah, that sounds great, light 'em up. But not providing those people the proper chance to give their side of things in court as is every person's right, that's just not how things work in a free country. sorry, BC government, you lose. As much as I downright fucking despise drunk drivers, I also know that police make mistakes, and that some of them are complete pricks who aren't making mistakes at all, abusing their power because its their power and they think they can get away with it.
Ok sure, but it also has to have the right impact on the right people at the right time. The best laws and the best intentions don't mean a thing if you're rounding up all the wrong people. All it does is show the citizens of the province that they're living in a police state that has no use for the concepts of rights and fairness, and if that's the goal, then the goal needs to change, and change yesterday.
I sincerely hope that the first person who gets dinged under these new rules decides to take the government to court and challenge them. There's no way, unless I'm missing something, that they should be able to survive a challenge on constitutional grounds, and the government and the police need to be reminded that we still have one of those.
Under the new laws, drivers caught with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher or those who refuse to give a breath sample will:
- Get a three-month driving ban.
- Get a $500 administrative penalty, and a $250 driver's licence reinstatement fee.
- Have their vehicle impounded for 30 days.
- Have to pay for the towing and impoundment costs
- Have to pay for the mandatory use of an ignition interlock device for one year.
- Face possible criminal charges.
The total cost adds up to almost $4,000, and it can all be triggered during a roadside stop by a police, without any immediate criminal charges or time in court.

But Public Safety Minister Mike de Jong says 133 people died in B.C. last year because of impaired driving, and the new rules are designed to quickly change people's behaviour without tying up the courts with legal cases.
"It seems the only way you can change behaviour is by imposing sanction that has dramatic impact on people's lives," said de Jong.

It's The Swiffer House-Defender!
I love stories like this where old people mop the floor with burglars. It's extra awesome when they use a Swiffer and a dustbuster to do it. Phillip Graham was cleaning the floor when a dude waving something that looked like a pistol came into his house ordering him to the floor. Graham wasn't havin' it and started using the Swiffer like a cattle prod. I guess the guy wasn't really armed, or he was so shocked that this old guy was going to fight him that he started to run away. Graham pushed the dude out as far as he could while still having the dustbuster plugged in. The dude ran away and wasn't found. But I'm sure he got a shock when the old geezer gave him what was coming to him.
What About The Woman On The Couch? Oh. She's Part Of The Furniture
Eeewww. I don't know how good I'd feel if I was one of the people viewing a house in Notting Hill where it was discovered that the owner of the house was lying dead on the couch while the tour was going on.
At first the agent thought the lady was just sleeping, so saved the living room for last so she might wake up. But after completing the viewing, he noticed that she was completely motionless and had turned a yellowish colour. So after escorting the folks out, he came back in and called her an ambulance. Upon arriving, the ambulance guy said she was already dead.
I find myself wondering if I were the agent, how I would handle that differently. Is it normal for a homeowner to sleep through the viewing of their house? I know I wouldn't want to make a big scene of seeing if she was ok in front of the viewers, because some people would just freak out, and word might spread like mad. But would it be better to ask the folks to step outside a minute because you wanted the homeowner to be awake for the tour, and then check on her, and if something is wrong, just reschedule the viewing? I can't imagine walking past a dead person and continuing on with the tour. But then again, I haven't seen a lot of dead people. Maybe they look like they're sleeping at first. But that leads me back to my first question. Have real estate agents had a lot of homeowners sleep through the viewings of their house?
I guess this poor woman had drank a lot, and her liver said see ya later, and she died. Yikes! I wonder how many viewers looked at her and wondered if something was wrong. And I wonder how many saw this story, complete with Google Street View shot, and feel all creeped out anyway.
