Alexander Graham Bell, You're a Genius!

That looks like a strange thing to say, now that phones are everywhere and they're so ordinary. But that must have been what they thought when he first invented the thing. And why would such weirdness be swirling through my head? Because I got a taste of what it must have been like before phones yesterday.

Like I said, we're almost ready to get over to the new place. Well, my stuff is over there, and Steve's moving on Saturday. Since we're using Steve's phone account and had to move it yesterday or be screwed until Monday or Tuesday, poor Steve was without a phone. I don't know if he'd call himself poor Steve, but damn it he's poor Steve for the purposes of this story. So I go down to the lobby to speak to our poor stressed out building manager to get my buzzer tied in with my phone and book the elevator for Steve's folks/moving crew who are heaving things like couches into the new home, and I find out that the elevator's not going to be available at the time we would have hoped. Now, what would one normally do? Call Steve and say hey, what should we do now? But he's got no phone! Add to that that my internet's not in at the new place because I need his big length of cable that, um, he's using. So he may have the internet, but I have no way of reaching him. So all that's left to do is take the bus across the city and talk to him face to face.

So off I go, thinking about how it must have sucked to not even have the bus back then, and only having horses and such. Then I get off the bus, and I really think I've been placed in one of those old movies. I'm running down the street, and I hear a slow spit...spit...spit. Within a minute, it becomes pit pat pit pat pit pat...and as I get close to Steve's house, it's more like pitter patter pitter patter pitter patter! Can't you just hear the dramatic old movie music?

I have to admit that once I got the message to Steve, the old time feel died suddenly when we...sent an email to his mom and asked what time would work for her. But it really made me think about how much we depend on the phone, and how I never want to go VOIP! And it made me realize how important the words "Mr. Watson, come here, I need you!" really were.

And that's that. Neat concept. whether it will fly or not or whether there will be the demmand from the "blink" community to make it worth while on a regular basis is yet to be determined - but good on them for trying. I, however, will not be listening as myself and a friend will be flying to South Carolina Wednesday morning to take in the rest of the round robin and playoffs. It should be a great time.

Another Me Plug

Right now over on
Salty Ham,
there's a deal going on where a bunch of us are choosing the 5 CD's we'd want with us if we were ever stuck alone on a deserted island. Well, this is my week, and my picks have been posted. So if you've ever wondered what some of my favourite albums of all time are, or if you just need something to do for the next 5 or 10 minutes,
the article is right here.

While you're there, feel free to check outthe the choices made by some of the other writers as well. Links to their articles can be found on the page linked above.

Ok, I'm off to pack some stuff for the move now, I'll be back later.

Ummm

Bobcaygeon, No.
Wheat Kings, No
Fireworks, No.
That Night In TORONTO!!!! No.
New Orleans, No.
Ahead By A Century, No.
Vaccination Scar, No.
Music at Work, No.

These, my friends, are songs that the Hip elected not top lay at their concert. That's right. Saturday night in Toronto - they didn't play THAT NIGHT IN TORONTO! Now - do I like all of the songs on this list? No. But I do most. And they were hits so someone liked them. And given how many people were at this show and paid nearly 50 bucks to be there - you probably should have played them.

I don't have a problem with no stuff or mixing it up. But 2 songs no one new the words to in the encore? What? Why'd you even come back out? You just pissed people off more. And believe me. People were PISSED walking out of there. Andl istening to the Classic Rock station on the way home that was pimping up post-Hip parties at different bars. Well they had people on who were also pissed.

No one should be surprised. Gord Downie has a history of playin what he wants when he wants. So this should be no shocker. But it's still ignorant.

So what did they play? Alot of new stuff which wasn't bad, alot of stuff from old albums that never made it as hits and about 4 or 5 hits.

- Nautical Disaster - my favourite Hip song, luckily, or I'd be even more annoyed.
- Courage - which was done as a very well said tribute to the Nurse's at Toronto Sick Children's Hospital. "We may not ever know what Heaven is - but we know what Hell is - a child in pain. A nurse can do more than any priest, a nurse can do more than any government, a nurst can do more than any lawyer. This is for the Nurses at Sick Kids". I thought it was a nice touch.
100th Meridian, 38 Years Old, and It's A Good Life If you Don't Weaken.

That was it for hits. Was it a bad show? No. The stuff they did was good and high energy and the crowd was in to it (at the beginning anyway before the clock was winding down and they weren't playing any hits). Would I go see them again? Probably. But not until they're old and are like the Stones and are touring just for the hits. Other than that I can now say I've seen Canada's biggest Rock band - and I'm content with that.

The rest of the day with the guys was good and fun - but not wild. Some wandering Toronto, looking at music stores at sweet guitars. Nothing ground breaking or story warranting.

Roundtable Plug

Just a quick note to let anybody who happens to care know that Salty Ham's
Vengeance Roundtable
has been posted.

Hopefully I do better this time around than I did last time out. But funnily enough, even though I got utterly schooled at Backlash, I'm still not in last place, which amuses me greatly because I didn't think such a thing was possible.

Also, for anybody keeping track [Carin and Matt], we've hit our 1000th post, at least so says the counter on the Blogger site. Go us!

Maybe I'd consider Going To Church If This Guy Was Preaching There

The
joke
I posted earlier got me thinking about
a video
that I stumbled on a few days ago. I'm not sure how long this show lasted, but if it was more than 1 episode, I'd be stunned.

The sound is kind of quiet and you can't really hear the people calling in, but you don't really need to for this to be funny.

And for all of you who are stupid enough to be surfing for things like this while you're working, you might wanna wait until you get home if you don't have headphones or run the company.

I Guess He Didn't Like It Then?

I just read this in the newspaper, and it might well be one of the greatest album reviews I've ever seen.

THREE DAYS GRACE

One X (Sony/BMG)

This repetitious, mind-numbing experience is best summed up by the song titles: Pain, Get Out Alive, Let it Die (not a Feist cover), Time of Dying, and Over and Over. Is there some kind of theme at work here? Supposedly the album was written about the drudgery of being on the road for years at a time, which one supposes is the cost of becoming a million-selling band.

Every lyric can be reduced to "I feel like I could die/ but I'm alive." That must be about the 23 boring hours of the day versus the one hour concert, but sitting through One X makes it hard to imagine 60 minutes on stage with this band being any more stultifying than the rest of their road dog existence.

To call this formulaic would be a compliment, but Gone Forever is one of the most shameless Nickelback rewrites since -- well, Nickelback themselves. Not surprisingly, the Alberta superstars can be found thanked in the liner notes alongside Seether, Staind, 3 Doors Down, Theory of a Deadman and rock radio's seemingly endless parade of identically beige bands. When Adam Gontier sings, "Somebody help me get through this nightmare," I feel his pain.

Finding Jesus

A drunk stumbles across a baptismal service on Sunday afternoon down by the river.

He proceeds to walk down into the water and stand next to the Preacher. The minister turns and notices the old drunk and says,

"Mister, Are you ready to find Jesus?"

The drunk looks back and says, "Yess, Preacher..I sure am."

The minister then dunks the fellow under the water and pulls him right back up. "Have you found Jesus?" the preacher asked.

"Nooo, I haven't!" said the drunk.

The preacher then dunks him under for quite a bit longer, brings him up and says, "Now, brother, have you found Jesus?"

"Noooo, I have not Reverend."

The preacher in disgust holds the man under for at least 30 seconds this time, brings him out of the water and says in a harsh tone, "My God, man, have you found Jesus yet?"

The old drunk wipes his eyes and says to the preacher...

"Are you sure this is where he fell in?"

It's Not Their Job!

Ok, time to vent a little.

I just finished reading an article in which members of the RCMP as well as B.C.'s Solicitor-General John Les slammed the makers of the new movie "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" for making a film that glorifies illegal street racing. They say that the movie's producers are irresponsible for celebrating such a dangerous and deadly activity, and they worry that the film may cause people to take what they're seeing in the theatres out to the car and onto the roads with them.

Lucas Black, one of the stars of the movie, quite rightly pointed out in response that ""The drifting and driving stunts in Tokyo Drift are amazing and they're also fantasy, and that "city streets and highways are no place for reckless behaviour." And just so we were perfectly clear about everything, he dropped this bit of knowledge on us as well. "Stunt driving belongs in the movies and not on city streets."

That's probably a slightly better response than "fuck you guys," which had they gotten it, wouldn't have been completely undeserved. Harsh yes, out of line, no.

Let's look at the facts.

Every time a movie, television show or videogame comes out that touches a nerve with somebody who holds a little bit of power, we hear about it. And when we hear about it, we always hear about how horrible it is, and how soon enough it will be the ruination of society because, I suppose, we're all too stupid to distinguish fantacy from reality. None of these people ever come right out and say that, but honestly, what other reason could there be? If there's no danger that somebody might take things too far, why bother bringing it up? Why not spend the time and energy doing whatever it is you're supposed to be doing for a living, which I guess in this case would be either mountedly policing or generally soliciting, however one goes about doing something like that. Or if you don't want to do that, why not spend a little time figuring out how the world works. Maybe by doing that, you would realize that it isn't the job of the Hollywood types to be our moral compass, it's their job to entertain us in whatever manner they so choose. It then becomes the responsibility of the rest of us to be discerning in our entertainment decisions. You can't expect anybody to make a movie and then tell his customers not to watch it, that's just stupid. But what you can expect is that he will present us with the option, and that the savvy consumers will then decide what's right for them and their families. It's the same with pretty much everything else. If you like Brand X of milk but not brand Y, you buy brand X and leave Brand Y on the shelf. You have the choice, you make the choice, free will and democrasy triumph over the forces of well, people like you who don't seem to want us to be able to make any sort of choice at all. It seems simple enough, I don't understand why people can't figure this out.

And on the issue of society being stupid, yeah, we are. Every one of us without exception has done at least 1 dumb thing. But as dense as most of us have ever been, a lot of us are intelligent enough to comprehend the concept of something like fiction. If you're over the age of...let's be generous and say 12, you're probably well on your way to understanding the differences between real and make believe, at least I'd like to think so. So who does that leave as targets for these government warning messages? I hate to say it, but if you're 33 and wondering how it is that the dogs in the Disney movies can speak better English than you can, the good ship Hope for the Future has sailed, and you showed up late for the boarding call. And that being the case, all that's left for the protectors of law and good taste are a bunch of deaf ears, deaf ears who do well to remember that they exist from day to day, let alone interpret anything that anybody else might try to make them understand. Those who get it already get it, and those who don't aren't going to, or they're children who will hopefully have it taught to them by a responsible influence as they grow and learn.

So please, stop wasting my time and yours. You're not helping anybody now, and next time we have to have this discussion, and believe me, we will, nothing will have changed other than the target of your outrage.

Hippest Birthday Ever

And that friends probably goes down as my lamest Title ever. Humblest apologies for subjecting you to it. Onward!

So today is your third favourite VC writer's birthday! Hizzah! Yes there's been merriment abound today with well wishes, cards, a free lunch and so on. Not too shabby. I gotta tell you, though, that this has been one of the more depressing birthdays. Maybe that's the wrong word. Maybe thought-provoking is better. I'm 23. No special number. Nothing changes in terms of benefits or legalities. Just 23. Yet it bugs me. 22 was fine - but 23 feels close to 25. And 25 is damn close to 30, and 40 and then dear god it's down hill from there. I'm not depressed. I've just never had to answer the old "do you feel any older" question with a "yes" before.

Anyway - the family celebration is tonight. They've just opened up a Crabby Joe's near my house. That's the bar that our crew all hangs out at in Belleville as it's right behind our house. It's perfect. So I figure it's time to christen the new one here in Oshawa. So the family is headed up there for dinner/wings and some beers. It should be pretty good.

The big celebration with my friends is this Saturday as it is to take place at Toronto's Fort York. The Tragically Hip are playing a huge show there that a big group of us from schol got tickets to somehow - as the show sold out in minutes. My buddy's birthday is next week so it fits in well between the two birthdays and it should be a huge piss up surrounding the show. Unfair to put "Jays Game" expectations on it - but should it reach that level I'll definitely give it equal story telling time. Irregardless I'll report back on the show as it should be a blast.

I think that's it other than that we should all flame Steve for the fact that they played in his very hometown last week and, as far as I know, he did not attend despite the fact that from what I"m told by people that went, tickets were much easier to get. For shame, Steve. for shame.

VC Cares: An Important Lesson In Urination

So I spoke to a guy the other day who did not know how to piss in a urinal. Doesn't seem that complicated, step up, zip down, flop out and aim in. However, interestingly, this is not the first person that I have spoken to in my travels with this particular problem. So it's time for a VC public service announcement. How To Piss In A Urinal. Or more directly, proper urinal manners. Here we go.

The Ideal Situation.

If you are lucky, and rarely is this the case, then you may be on the receiving end of what is only known as the "Ideal Situation." This situation is, of course, the presence of one urinal. The etiquette here is simple: if it's empty, pee, if it's not, don't. Period. Of course, a foray to the world of the public stall could be merited if the urinal is busy, but it is always preferable to busy one's self with washroom related activity while waiting for the urinal to free up. Wash your hands, check your hair, check the floor for loose change, do the moonwalk, etc.

An important note: It is NOT considered proper etiquette to enquire to a peeing person if he is almost done. Nor is it seemly to attempt to peek in the urinal for activity. If you suspect the patron is merely standing around with his fly open, it is usually best just to keep those suspicions to yourself.

The Two Urinal Tango

One urinal was easy. No tough decisions there. Two urinals, well, it's a whole different world. With luck, they will both be empty. In this case, choose the appropriate urinal based on proximity to walls and other forms of shielding, and preferably as far away as possible from large sources of microwaves and free radicals.

Chances are though, that with two urinals one of them will be occupied. In this case under no circumstances should you proceed to the urinal. I repeat: DO NOT PROCEED. To proceed is to pee in one urinal adjoining another which is also occupied. This is the cardinal sin of urinal etiquette. Never pee beside someone. Instead, it is best to busy one's self with activites mentioned under the Ideal Situation, with the possible exception of moonwalking, for which breakdancing should be substituted.

A question which becomes increasingly pressing at this point is the option of the stall. If the need is urgent (and it may well be), the stall may be considered. However, it is of utmost importance to make it appear as if the stall was the destination all along. This is why planning is necessary. If there is potential urination in the near future, one should always take these easy steps:

Scout out the bathroom: Urinal number and location
Map out a secondary stall acess route
Practice casual-seeming scouting of urinal area
Limber up for extensive periods of breakdancing
Planning is not all it takes though. Once in the stall, standing is no longer an option. To stand is to admit to all who peek for feet that you never had any intention of using a stall, but rather that your efforts at finding a suitable urinal were unfruitful. Sit and pee, and if at all possible, stay for an amount of time equal to that which you would normally take if the stall had been the appropriate initial choice, once again to suggest that you are not simply peeing in a stall. However, here we delve into the realm of stall etiquette, which is an entirely different field.

Three's Company

Well then, what about three urinals. Well, this starts to get tricky. If you should come across three empty urinals, then the natural male tendency to attempt to accumulate power and property might lead you to try the middle urinal. Unfortunately, in some countries, to do so is punishable in manners unspeakable. For to choose the middle urinal is to deny any subsequent patron of the urinals the opportunity to pee in isolation while you are still at your business. To choose the middle of three urinals is to commit an act of pure, unadulterated selfishness, and for it one should be ashamed. Instead, one should immediately proceed the the end urinal which is furthest from the door, or alternatively, best smelling.

However, all three urinals are not always empty. If upon entering the bathroom you discern that the middle urinal alone is occupied, ever, you should immediately seek out the proper authorities to punish the culprit. Hopefully though, one of the end urinals is occupied. This allows one to proceed to the opposite urinal, and pee in relative security.

Further complications arise if two of the urinals are occupied. If they are the two end urinals, then one should proceed with delay tactics which were described earlier, especially nose scratching and armpit sniffing. Alternatively, a stall may be employed, being sure to use the deceitful tactics also mentioned earlier. It is possible that two adjacent urinals of the three be occupied. In this case, it is best just to leave. Hold your urge, and retreat. To stay is to share in the shame that must accompany any two individuals who are engaged in such an unseemly situation. Furthermore, if you are ever engaged in peeing at an end urinal, and someone enters the middle urinal with the intention of peeing, it is most definitely appropriate to ask him to leave. If he is unreceptive to your request, you might consider peeing on his leg.

Should all three urinals be occupied, upon entry to the bathroom, not only should you beat a hasty retreat, but you should also avert your eyes in order not to have the horrible sight of three adjacent occupied urinals forever ingrained into your mind.

Just Four, Not More.

Well with four urinals, the decisions start to really pile up. Even if all four urinals are empty upon your arrival, there is still a lot of thinking to do. Ideally, you should still choose a nice, clean smelling urinal at either one of the ends. However, certain extenuating circumstances have set precedence for the selection of one of the two inner urinals. The reason that this is acceptable is that the selection of an inner urinal does not decrease the potential M.P.P.N.B.A. (Maximum People Peeing Not Beside Anyone). Therefore, if, say, a large deposit of nuclear waste has located itself in BOTH of the end urinals, an inner urinal may be employed, preferably the one farthest away from the largest nuclear waste deposit.

What about if someone is already there? Well, much like the other situations, pee if you can without peeing beside anyone, and otherwise lapse into delay tactics or stall deceit strategy. In fact, because the MPPNBA's are identical for three and four urinals, etiquette is greatly preserved across the platforms.

Five! Five! Five!

Well, what about five urinals. This is starting to be a lot of urinals here, and so proper etiquette is even more important, as the potential for people in the washroom to view improper etiquette at work is steadily increasing. Now, however, in the case of an empty bank of urinals, the decision is going to reflect your personality. If you are relatively shy, or introverted, either of the end urinals is the appropriate choice. This shows your good knowledge of urinal etiquette, but in no way is flashy or showy. However, if you are bold and daring, you should choose the middle urinal. This immediately gains you command and authority over the entire urinal bank, while still maintaining the highest possible MPPNBA. Manners and power, and unbeatable combination.

Now, selection of a urinal remains simple if one or more are occupied. Pee if you can, if you can't don't. Don't break any rules of etiquette, and make sure that others uphold them. However, because the number of urinals is increasing, it becomes increasingly difficult to assess the situation while still maintaining an entirely casual and matter of fact air. At this point, practice is essential. Use mirrors to scan the urinals, tie your shoe without ever taking your eyes off the urinals, etc. Of even greater concern though, is to appear all the time that you are not actually examining the urinals. Such actions could be misconstrued, and such misinterpretations must be avoided to maintain the proper bathroom decorum.

Six, Six, Pick Up Your Sticks.

Now with six or more urinals, the rules are not so concrete. However, a few things must still be kept in mind.

Maintain a high MPPNBA. Choose end urinals when possible, and plan your entry to the urinal bank so that every second urinal is occupied. To employ only every third urinal is a waste, and often is accompanied by a small fine if caught.

Pee as far away from others as possible. If you enter into a washroom of 6 urinals, and someone is at an end urinal, then by all means proceed directly to the urinal at the opposite end. Maintain your distance at all times. However, in banks of 8 urinals are more, or when the gap between a urinal patron and the end of the bank is 7 urinals, it is appropriate to choose the second farthest away urinal. To choose the farthest urinal might imply to a sensitive individual that he smelt, or emitted a blinding light, or some other such condition, and might cause undue insult. Therefore, the second farthest urinal is selected in order to suggest that while you have a good grasp of urinal etiquette, in no way do you feel that the other individual is a grotesquely deformed monster.

T So there it is, kids. It's pretty simple if you follow the rules. Special thanks for the people in the Bathroom Etiquette Department (yes we have a Bathroom Etiquette Department... it's a big company ok?) for working long hours and doing lots of unpleasant research so we could all learn something here today.

Happy Wizzing

And You Think You're Having A Bad Day

Read
this,
and check out the names on these poor bastards.

Suddenly the silly jokes people made about my last name when I was a kid aren't so annoying anymore.

Thanks to whoever it was that sent me the link to this. I deleted the email and can't remember your name now, but full credit and much gratitude to you sir.

Caladonia Debate Continues

This was left on the comment board underneath post on the situation in Caladonia. The man clearly knows what he's talking about this had been bumped fairly far down the page by the time I found the comment so I wanted to make sure everyone saw it.

He refutes a couple points that I made. Since this is not the first time I've been taught something I didn't know and will certainly not be the last - I thought I would give his point fair exposure.

" "The law is the law". The law, in this case, includes the Treaty of Albany, the Two Row Wampum agreement, the Royal Proclamation of 1763, all of which recognise First Nations' sovereignty. At a variety of different levels, from treaties to the census (which Statistics Canada does not take on First Nations reserve communities), we recognise and treat the First Nations as sovereign entities.

Now, in this case, as the news release from the Chiefs and Clan Mothers makes clear, the law (the Treaty of Albany) provides a process for the Canadian government to ask the Haudenosaunee for the extradition of offenders who have committed theft or a number of other offences.
John G. Spragge | Homepage | 06.15.06 - 10:40 pm "

Clearly he's more educated on the subject than I, so there's no need for a rebuttal. Well said, John.

We have been redeemed!

I'm awake because I'm scared to sleep. I'm in my miserable apartment next to the freaks, creeps and druggies, and my parents have not yet arrived. They're coming to help me move out of this frightening place, so I came back to stay in it, expecting that they would arrive just after the vampires came out to strike, so to speak. I expected them 2 hours ago. I keep hearing, "thump! slam! bang! stomp stomp scrub scrub bang!" but none of those sounds bring good news. They only bring more hooligans and unknown eeewwwness.

So I decided to look back in the archive to keep my mind occupied, and revel in something we haven't been able to see in a long time. I even went to the trouble of finding the first time Steve first noticed that our comments get eaten by something similar to the sock-devouring dryer monster. But today, thanks to Haloscan deciding to change its mind, the monster has puked our comments back out so we can read them all again. So we can go back and laugh at Gee, Satan, Greg, and all our other characters who have come and gone, and newbs can finally see some real in-fighting! Thank you, Haloscan! We no longer look like we're spewing piles of bullshit.

Now..mom and dad, get here so I can go to sleep! I feel like the little kid who's afraid of the dark. Give me a nightlight!

Better Late Than Never

Back in December of 2003, I posted an
item
about a man named George Pavlovszky. Well, I just found out that his kid, or at least somebody claiming to be his kid, didn't really like it too much. I didn't get these comments until right now, partly because things used to disappear after a few months and partly because he posted them underneath the wrong post, but here they are now.

Hey, I was looking through all of the stuff on my dad and I came acrossed this page. I just thought id let you know the real story... I dont appreciate people bad talking my dad when they dont even know what happened.

My Dad is a great guy and always was, He may have a short temper but hes a really nice guy, Friendly and all.

The reason my dad, George Pavlovszky, Did what he did is because he has been working there over 20 years and lately they have been screwing around with him alot. About 1 week before he did this, They were getting my dad to train two guys to do Hisjob, Which to let you know, He cuts down trees for the City of Moncton, And thats also his private work, He doesnt work in the Post Office, I dont get where you would get that Idea... Anyway, My dad got mad because his bosses were going to get these two guys to take his Job and then they were going to fire him or something like that.

And also, My dad is now being screwed around by the Union. They arnt helping him at all, Its not what you think. They are now screwing with him. They HAVE to help anyone with getting their job back but they are basicly ignoring my dad. I dont know really anything else to say, But yeah, I just wanted you to know the true story. And because of this, I will be spending my christmas alone, Without my dad. Hes a great man, But he does lose his temper easily. Hes getting out soon, But not soon enough.

A few quick comments.

1. Sorry for not getting to this sooner, we're usually a lot quicker than this.

2. I'm sorry to hear that you had to spend Christmas without an important member of your family. that's got to be hard to deal with, especially when the reason why is such a public one.

3. Saying he's got a short temper is an interesting way of putting it.

4. The post office thing was a joke. I don't actually think he works there. Ask somebody what the term going postal means and it'll make a lot more sense.

5. And finally, I hate to say this, but the union probably decided to ignore your Father because he's a public relations nightmare. Even if he's the nicest guy in the history of history, it's kind of hard to explain fighting for the rights of a drunk guy waving a gun around at the office. Maybe that doesn't make what they're doing right from your perspective, but that's how the world works. Like it or not, public perception means a lot, and the way that Dad was presented in the media and by you in your comments since you didn't deny that he did what he did doesn't paint him in a very good light. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of unions, but I can't sit here with a straight face and say they're wrong for not taking his case. the kind of man he is off the clock doesn't mean a thing to them, and it shouldn't. What matters is that he was fired for doing something that I hope we would all be fired for. Under those circumstances, it doesn't make any sort of good sense for them to tarnish their reputation by defending him, which was my point in the original post.

Thanks for writing in, and I really hope you see this some day.

That's Awesome!

If I was the type of guy to do such a thing, and the chance came up to blow somebody over at HaloScan, I'd probably be wanting to do it right about now. But since I'm not, I'll just settle for letting everybody know that all of our old comments are back. Everything that all of you said from December of 2003 when we started using our current commenting system up until right now is all back on the site. this is great because it means that most of our inside stupidity has context again, and it's also great because it means that we no longer have to pay to get everything back. We like this a lot for many reasons, not the least of which is simply that we're cheap. So feel free to look around the archives and to marvel at the stupidity of a few of us, and the brutal reactions of others to that stupidity. It's good times.

Wow

So a few posts ago I mentioned that all the sports fans were gone to which Steve commented that you have to write about sports to get them to come back via search or whatever. Since this isn't the stupidest thing I've ever heard, I figure I'll try. I mean you gotta get search hits somehow and since we have no pictures of "RANDY ORTON'S PENIS" or "MATT STAJAN NUDE WITH GIRLFRIEND", we'll try it this way.

Hmm. I may have just accidentally attracted the wrong crowd again. Anyway....

Last night was one hell of a hockey game. Edmonton managed to somehow keep the series alive. I'll say this, though. If you're Pisani for Edmonton, you're shorthanded, it's overtime and you're one loss from elimination - you need to have a serious set of nuts on you to stand in at the other team's blue line and hope you can pick off that pass because if you miss it Carolina is going 5 on 3 in to your end with your season on the line and you go from being the hero to the goat. Good on him for having the balls to do it but that could have gotten ugly really quick if he misses that puck. Game 6 is Saturday at 8. Should be great. Enjoy.

Jays continue to impress winning the last 2 with the Orioles. 1 more to go. Hopefully they can take the series with a win.

CFL season starts this weekend. Light up a dube in honour of the Argos most recent signing, Ricky Williams. What's the big deal? So they signed a guy who has more NFL drug violations than he does rushing yards. Oh. Apparently that's frowned upon. I forgot.

Lastly. a note to everyone in my office. Shut up. Just shut up. There's no need to laugh at everything you say yourself. Not everything is funny. Referring to the pre-hole punched paper in teh photo-copier as holey paper is only funny once, and even then it was marginal. Quit it. Do not whistle while you wait for the copier to be done, it irritates the 2 of us who sit right behind us. Do not drum on said copier while waiting for same reason. Do not assume I know exactly what the coaches in the Cup Final should do and bring up the game 3 times a day to me just because you know I like hockey and you're bored waiting to speak to someone else who is busy. I'm still trying to work! So honestly. Just Shut Up for the rest of the day.

Have a lovely day.

The Baby?

Well, Steve beat me to the punch with his reference to my smallness sinking to a brand new, um, well, low. So I figured I should tell the story. It's short, har har, aren't I full of endless puns. But here it is.

While we were in Ottawa, we decided to take a cab to a pub to meet the guy who got married this weekend and his wife. The cab pulled up, and in a completely serious voice, the cabby said, "You two get in, I'll take the baby." as he reached for my hand the way some people do. The way you lead your little daycare kid through a crowded area so they don't run out into the streety weety in front of the trucky wuckies. Yes, this man thought I was a baby. And his English was good! So I can't even think that maybe he got a couple words mixed up, and in a bizarre coincidence, pinned the wrong one on me. I know his English was good because as soon as I started convulsing with laughter, he said, "Oh! Lady! Lady! ... You're not angry that I called you baby?" He was really shocked when a. it was pointed out that I was the oldest one there, and b. I paid the fare. Then he said, "Oh, you are being mature now! ... but you really look like a baby. You have a baby face." He wanted to keep explaining how he made that mistake. God it was funny. So I am officially the baby now. If I'm not careful, at the rate I'm going, I'll be the fetus soon.

Honey, I'm Home!

I really don't have a whole lot to say here, I just wanted to mention that Carin and I made it back from Ottawa alive, and surprisingly enough, not hung over. Don't worry though, plenty of drinks and good times were had by pretty much everybody we spent any sort of significant time with. I dont have any legendary stories of drunken destruction or anything like that, but it was great to get together with friends, and to see a few people that I haven't seen in years.

The wedding itself was really nice. It was an outdoor deal which could have been a disaster had it rained like some of us thought it might, but everything went about as perfectly as it could have gone, even though it wasn't the warmest of days. The sun coming out and breaking up some of the cloudiness at the same time as the couple walked out was a nice touch too, and if I didn't know better, it's one of those things that I would be wondering how they pulled off and who's idea it was. Between that and the cash bar at the reception taking debit and credit cards, I've got some great memories to take home with me, even if a few of them are a little bit hazy.

Yes, this post sucks, and yes, it's just about over. but before I get out of here and start getting life back to normal and then turning everything upside down again in preparation for the move, I want everybody who read or commented on Carin's post about
her smallness
to ask her about her new nickname. Sorry about that, you unaccompanied child you, but I just couldn't resist. I still find the whole thing way too funny for words.

Anyway, I'm out for now. I'll try to come up with something a little later on, and hopefully it'll be miles better than this. See you soon.

Lousy Natives

See now that's a headline that will grab your attention! Racism abound, friends! Unfortunately I will now puss-out and retract half the statement - but hey - I got you reading.

It's not all natives, not even a majority. Just one small group. I'm sure if you live in Ontario you've heard about the land dispute in Caledonia. I don't know all the details and politics, and nor do I care. But there's been a lengthy stand-off between the Native-Canadians (is that right?) in the area and the people of Caledonia.

Well last week it turned violent. A few of the Native protestors resorted to violence against a reporter who was there covering the story. Needless to say, people were outraged - as they should be. A peaceful protest is one thing but when you get physical with someone not even involved, just there to do their job, you've crossed a line.

The kicker. No arrests have been made. The authorities are now demmanding that the people of the Native reserve hand over the individuals responsible to the OPP.

Now here's the part that gets me mad. Thism orningon the news a representative for the Native-Canadians said that they will not be handing over the responsible individuals as the situation "is being handled internally."

What the fuck? Who the hell are you? Why are your people above the laws of the country you live in? Ya you've been wronged in the past. ya the white man is the devil. Ya ya ya whatever. The law is the law and whether you're black, brown, yellow, pink white or native you are bound by them. You're not above them. You don't get to handle them within your own special little group. You face the music like everyone else.

I could even get accept a statement like "We have no proof and no idea who the individuals are so we will not be moving forward with this". It would be complete bullshit and no one would believe you but at least you wouldn't be blatantly acknowledging the crime and that you know who did it but basically saying you don't give a shit because you'll deal with it yourself.

What does that mean anyway??? "internally". It means that they can say they've handed down some penalty to him that can never ben proven and an injured reporter never see's any real justice. Real fair.

I can tell you I spent a year in NOrthern Ontario living in a small town last year. The next town over was a native reserve. For the most part nobody bothered each other. Sure the people from the reserve came to town to shop or go to movies or the bar or whatever but no one really thought twice about it. The part that pissed people off was the Native cop car driving around the town. That's right. They have their own police. Well that's fine I guess if you have your own laws or something. I don't know the whole deal. But you're off the reserve. They haveno power in town. That's a fact. They are not recognized by any governing body other than whatever the Native governing body is. That's fine. If you want to police you own groupover and above what society says and your constituants are all on board. Go for it. But it's over and above basic Canadian law as you cannot ignore the laws set by our government.

So this cruiser would come in on weekend and circle around town which really got under the skin of people since they had no control or authority over anyone. Party's that they would try to break up continued on with people laughing at them since they had no right to say anything, kids stopped on the street who looked troublesome would straight up ignore them. And really... I don't blame them. The town had it's own cops adn the they were not bound by Native law. But it does go the other way - Natives are bound by Canadian law. But everyone is too afraid to do anything drastic fearing charges of racism.

Think about it - if this Caledonia/Native situation was anything other than what it is and someone was protecting violent criminals - Cops would be in there busting heads to find them - but here they don't. And it's sick. This is the PC world we live in now.

For years races, minorities, ethnic groups, sexual preferences and all kinds of other people have asked for one thing. To be treated equally. But it's a 2 way straight people. Allow yourself to be treated equally when it works against you and maybe people would be more supportive going the other way. This is making headlines nation-wide and people are PISSED!

Just something to think about.

I Miss The Days Where Rage Equalled Good Posts

Good afternoon, class.

So I'm at work, and it sucks. And it's Monday. And I'm tired. And everything that everyone is doing at any time seems to be pissing me off. When I started this blog in '03 with Steve - that would have equalled a golden post. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, that no longer seems to be the case. I think, at least today, it's because I'm just a whiney cranky bitch as opposed to having anything close to a "real" problem to complain about. For example, all day people have been chatting directly behind my desk, using the photo-copier directly behind my desk (which someone began right as I typed that) and just generally making innocent enough small talk than I'm just in no mood to respond to. Hard to make a post out of that. I'm just a bitch.

But, irregardless, I'm going to write. If for no other reason than that I'll be typing away which should destract me from the irritations around me which doing the midless work that this afternoon has brought me, would not accomplish. Plus, for some reason, if someone sees you typing away at something quickly as opposed to studying your sheet or screen, they seem to pass you by assuming you're doing something important. Foolish.

The weekend wasn't bad. I had back to Belleville. The party's were not as plentiful as advertised, but the group of us that usually chills together had a pretty good time. I wouldn't quite call it a bust - but certainly not up to par with what I was expecting. Maybe that's my fault for too high of expectations. Whatever.

Great hockey game Saturday night, Jays lose a series to Detroit and the Argo's sign a suspended NFL pot-head. I'll leave the sports at that since there no longer seems to be a large portion of sports fans.

Last night I actually ordered the ECW PPV. First one I've paid for since WrestleMania which I get every year. Before that the last one I paid for was probably... the previous ECW PPV and WrestleMania. All in all a pretty decent show which had much more of a "let's kick off the new brand" feel than a "let's hit all the old highspots from the past" like last year. Nothing wrong with that. Main Event finish was fairly predictable in that there would be controversy. That's probably also fine as they couldn't really afford to make either guy look bad. That should be fixed up tonight. For the third Monday in a row there is a huge hockey game on the same night as RAW so I guess I'll be missing it, but perhaps some channel surfing if the game is a bore.

Speaking of channel surfing. WWE is doing that frantically right now in Canada trying to find someone to air the new ECW show. TSN has said they have no interest in picking up another live wrestling show as they're already going to be pre-empting RAw in favour of Monday Night Football in the fall and will probably have to have a Tuesday replay of the show (the night ECW would air). The Score supposedly may have an interest but are fully aware with how much SmackDown! sucks that ECW may out do it in the ratings and so would most likely want to dump SmackDown in exchange for ECW. WWE doesn't want any part of that scenario either because then they're still looking for somewhere to air that Dud. So if you're in Canada don't bother looking for the ECW show tomorrow night as it doesn't have a home yet. IF anything changes and you give a shit, I'm sure you'll hear.

There's supposed to be a pretty good story on the supposed Toronto Terrorists tonight on Global. Or was it CTV? I don't remember. If you care to see it you'll figure it out. Or maybe someone else knows and can chime in with a comment.

Well. I was right. Rage, today anyways, equals Snooze. But I pissed away some time. So the only real loser here is... well... you.

On that note. Fair well.

Answer Me This

I figured since Carin already has the
things I'll miss about my old place when I move
beat covered, that it would only be fitting for one of us negative assholes to come on here and talk about things we won't miss. And since Matt's not moving and Carin wrote about the good things the other day and a lot of the shitty ones are pretty well documented, I guess it falls to me. I'm not going to bother with a huge list of complaints and grievances, since other than having absolutely no space and being unable to get my mail when I need it because I share a mailbox with the people upstairs who don't like to be home or return phone calls in a timely fashion, I've been pretty happy here. Instead I'm just going to focus on one thing that I hope some of you might be able to help me figure out.

I live in a basement apartment where the radio reception absolutely sucks. I can get somewhere around 5 FM stations on a good day, of which approximately 0 are consistently any good. AM is pretty decent, but there's only so much talk radio any man can handle, no matter how hard that man may try. So unless I listen to CD's or internet streams, I'm subjected to some pretty piss poor programming on a pretty regular basis. This leads me to a question, actually no, 2 questions.

First, why is it that no matter where you are in the world, the worst radio stations are always the ones with the strongest signals? And second, why in hell is Coldplay so popular? While I'm at it, I should throw in one more. Is there a law around here that I'm unaware of that says that unless you're a country radio station, you're required to play a minimum of 37 Coldplay songs a day? Yes, in case you haven't figured it out by now, one of the things I'm most looking forward to about the new place is being able to turn off a Coldplay song without running headlong into another one.

Come on guys, help me out here. If you're a Coldplay fan, please explain one simple thing to me. Why? I can't figure it out. I can think of 2 Coldplay songs that I don't absolutely despise, and I don't even care for them very much. They're Clocks and Yellow in case anybody cares, but back to the point. Everywhere I go, all I hear and read about is how great and how revolutionary these guys are, and I just don't understand. Every Coldplay song sounds like every other Coldplay song, and I don't care what anybody says, Chris Martin always sounds to me like he's either got a yap full of food that he's swallowed half way, or like he's doing his best imitation of an animal that's just been hit by a truck. I won't go so far as to say that this band sucks donkey dicks, but that's only because I don't think it would be fair to insult donkey diccks that way.

Anyway, now that I've got that out of my system, I should probably eat some lunch and do some packing. And by the way, if the site is quiet for the next few days, it's because Carin and I will both be in Ottawa for our friend's wedding. So hopefully Matt can entertain you, and hopefully we'll have some fun stories to tell when we get home.

See you all soon, and always remember...um...never mind, I forget.

Original! Yay!

So I'm at work - as usual - and rediculously unmotivated today. Yesterday seemed to fly by and I got tons accomplished but this morning is just so blah. So I cam on here. But I'll warn. If you have things to do but are sticking around in case I say something funny/relevant/important you're probably wasting your time.

So I just read Carin's post on all the things she'd miss about her place. I haven't been to visit her since she moved out of her last place so haven't seen it but I thoroughall enjoyed the read. Mostly because it was original. So often on these things it's not and we post links or stories or things like that. And they're funny or interesting but I've always enjoyed the content that Steve, Carin and even sometimes myself have been able to come up with on our own. From everyday life to great stories or takes on pop-culture, it just seems more fun. I know I'm probably the most guilty of unoriginality (when I'm here that is). I seem to recall a few years back posting nothing but rip-offs from X Entertainment as Hallowe'en and Christmas countdowns. I dunno. Not that any of this matters. I just kinda hit me after reading Carin's post.

The whole "Terror In Toronto" thing is everywhere right now. It's made International headlines all over the world. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be big news.... here. Sure most people know and it's getting lots of coverage - but it's amazing how many people know nothing about it. Can't imagine being that oblivious. Turn on a radio, grab a paper, anything. Good god, man, it's the world around you.

I saw a man interviewed walking in to the Toronto Stock Exchange on Monday morning (one of the buildings supposedly targetted) who had no idea that the very building he worked at could have been blown off the map before he showed up to work. It's scarey.

This whole thing makes me feel compelled to say something about tollerance. We have a small group of loyal readers that makes up, in reality, an extremely low percentage of the population, and I think that they're all smart enough to already know this but I still feel like it should be put out there as often as possible.

There have already been incidents at different Muslim houses of worship and other structures, strikes against Muslim homes and general coldness towards anyone appearing to practise the Islamic faith. This is a terribly unfair and racist re-action. An entire race of people cannot be grouped in with one group of evil people. An overwhelming majority of Arabs in our country are here because a member of their family came here to enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy, not to destroy them. We need not be reminded that Timothy McVeigh, the man killed many in the Oklahoma City bombings was the shitest redneck you'll ever meet. Evil knows no skin colour or religious belief.

Tollerance is more important these days than it ever has been before - but as I said - I'm sure I"m speaking to a group who doesn't need me to point this out.

Be Safe

Something Tells Me They Had the Brain Damage Part Covered Long Before This Happened

Two students found dead inside large helium balloon

LUTZ, FLA. (Jun 5, 2006)

Two university students were found dead inside a large, deflated helium balloon after apparently pulling it down and crawling inside it.

The deaths of Jason Ackerman and Sara Rydman, both 21, appear to be accidental, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Major Bob Schrader said.

Their bodies were found Saturday inside a deflated helium balloon at a condo complex a few kilometres north of Tampa. The 2.4-metre-diameter balloon was used to advertise the complex.

"It was more a fun thing they thought they were doing," said Sara Rydman's mother Linda. "You know how you blow up the balloon and suck the helium."

The county medical examiner said yesterday the cause of death will not be released for weeks, until test results come back. Inhaling helium can quickly lead to brain damage and death from lack of oxygen.

Goodbye Old House, I'll Miss You....A Little

Well, I've pissed and moaned about my house a lot lately. But now that it's almost time to say goodbye to it, it makes me think of all the little things I'll miss about living there.

I'll miss the guys at the little store down the street, who, at first, could barely understand me, but now remember everything I ever get from there, and make jokes about how often I come buy for little things, especially the older guy who seemed really rude because he greeted us the first time with, "What! " But now wonders how I'll ever get the milk home and tells me not to fall in the winter.

I'll miss the guy who lives in the main part of the building who appears randomly and asks me how I am. He always told me he was there if I needed him for things, and worried about me when the creeps started moving in next door.

I'll miss the lady who brings the mail. Whenever I'd run into her, she'd stop and talk to me, and she was so excited for me when I went away for Babs. She was also excited when I said I was leaving my house of chaos. She genuinely cared about me, and said I deserved better than that. How cool is that?

I'll miss the landlord. He was always good to me. I know the new one will probably be good to me, but I feel bad for this one, because when I leave, who knows what he'll get? He's such a good guy, I hate to see him abused like this. I know you're saying, he's the landlord, he can say no...but in this case, I don't think he can very easily since he's not the head hauncho. They pick the people, he cleans up their shit, and has to do it with a smile. Poor guy.

I'll miss the short walks to all the bars and restaurants nearby. It made parties much easier. I know it won't be a long walk from this place, but these places were essentially right outside my door.

And most of all, I'll miss the place itself. It was a cute bachelor pad that didn't make you feel like you were living in a closet. Hey, I managed to have me and five other people in it for a new years party. Who can do that in most little places like that? It fit everything I had and there was still room to move. It served its purpose, it was the place where I learned I could make it on my own, and it was cool. So I'll always look back on it with nostalgia...as I do a dance of joy and move into our new home. Onward and upward!

That's What Happens When You're Too Small.

Ok, I hate doing whiny posts like this, but I'm frustrated.

Today, on my way home, I got to a street that I had to cross. I cross it all the time. So I'm standing there. When it seemed like the light had turned and it was time to go, I was about to step out. I even heard someone say something like, "that's right", but just then, a car drove out in front of me. So I didn't go. Then the guy decided to go across with me. He felt he had to tell me where everything was, as if I had no idea I was crossing a street. When I got to the other side, I said to him, "What was up with that car?" What he said pissed me off supremely. He proceeded to explain to me, even after I repeatedly told him I knew these things and just wanted to know if the light was red or green when I tried to cross, the entire mechanism of crossing a goddamn street, that there was a time for the cars and a time for people to go. He even felt like he had to tell me we were at an intersection. No shit, skippy. I do have some concept of the world around me.

If it were this one guy alone, I'd just say the poor guy probably thought I didn't know what I was doing. I mean, I almost stepped out in front of a car in his eyes, so he probably thought I was completely unaware of what was going on. After all, lots of people think that if somebody's blind, it's amazing that they can make it out of the house, and some people think we should all be warehoused together in little houses for blind people and cared for by workers. But this felt like more than that. I have noticed I get a few different kinds of help, sometimes when I ask for it, and sometimes because people just decide I need it. I get the nice people who are cool. I get the ones that like to make themselves feel good by doing their good deed. And then I get the ones who make me feel small because, well, they think I am small.

Sadly, the fact is, I'm too damned short. I'm about 4 foot 7, so I guess I look like a kid. I've been told I look 12, like I'm in high school, or like I'm 18. That's the best estimate I've had. I even won a toy at one of those guess my age booths at a fair because somebody guessed I was 12 when I was about 17. Once, I went to get on a greyhound bus, and the driver stopped me and said, "Do you have an unaccompanied child form?" I was 21, so she got pretty embarrassed. I can't count the number of times I've been given kids menus and crayons in restaurants. Need I say more?

So when people see me on the street, I guess some of them freak out. They talk all babyish to me, they ask me where my mother is, they ask me why I'm walking around at night, and it's maybe 8:00. Some of them feel the need to take me by the hand and lead me places and make me feel like the neglected child someone let out of the group home. They won't leave me until I get where I say I'm going, even though I tell them I'm fine. I appreciate their concern, it just frustrates the shit out of me, especially when they descend upon me when I'm doing fine. Sometimes it feels like I could single-handedly save a bus-load of people, and I'd still be thought of as a helpless little kid. What do I have to do to show these people I'm a competent adult? It makes me start to wonder if there is something else I'm doing to send this kid message, and if I'll ever be taken seriously. I mean, not only have I got the blink factor working against me sometimes, I've got the shrimp factor that makes people feel like I have to be scooped up and taken back home. . But then I think I should stop whining. Apparently, I would have been a lot shorter, so I should consider myself lucky. If doctors hadn't given me stuff to convince my body to grow, who knows, maybe I'd be the height of Bilbo Baggins.

Ok now I just sound like a whiny baby. I probably wouldn't even be writing this post at all if it didn't seem like lately, I've been made to feel inferior and incapable almost everywhere I go. I appreciate everyone's concern, but gees. Do I really need rescuing that often?
