More On The Exploding Toads
Scientists are still trying to solve the mystery of the
exploding toads,
and the latest theory about why it's happening is pretty
disgusting.
Don't eat while reading that, I mean it.

All Things Pope
Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote about
The Incredible Popeman comic books and action figures?
Well, if that's just not enough JP2 swag for you, perhaps you might be interested in your very own set of
A Pope for the Ages trading cards.
As for me, I'm holding out until I can buy a "My Pope went to Heaven and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" shirt.
I'll let someone else make the joke about the soon to be released John Paul II commemorative breathing tube, because that's just not nice.

Chain Mail Wisdom
Somebody sent me one of those tell the people in your life how much you love them chain emails today. I'm sure you know the ones, everybody gets them and they're all pretty much the same. What would you do if one day you woke up and someone you care about was gone? Would you have any regrets? Anything you wish you would have said? Would that person know truly how you felt? Yeah, you know the ones.
The sentiment was nice, though I can't help but think whenever I get one how much more it would have meant if the person sending it had taken a couple of minutes to actually sit down and write it on his or her own just for me, instead of blindly forwarding somebody else's words to an addressbook full of people, words that have no doubt been around the net millions of times over the years. Maybe it's just me, but when I know that these nice words I'm reading that were sent by somebody I care about are also at any given time being read by some fat guy in Iowa and everybody else this person knows, they tend to lose most, if not all of their meaning. It doesn't take much longer to write your own email to tell me that you're thinking of me, and I can't speak for everybody, but I for one really appreciate the personal touch.
But that's not even why I'm writing this.
Like most chain letters, this one had the standard set of instructions at the end. The ones that tell you to send it on to everyone you know so that they'll all know exactly how you feel. But a line in this set really stood out to me. It said "pass this message on to everyone you know, including the person who sent it to you. IF you don't, the sky won't fall, but somebody in the world won't be smiling."
First of all, who worries about the sky falling? I know I don't. And why should I be upset if only 1 person on the planet isn't smiling? It seems to me that if we somehow managed to get the ranks of the non-smiling down to just 1 person, that would be a huge improvement compared to the way things are now. Think about it. There are somewhere around 6 billion people traveling around the sun with us. And when you stop and consider the kinds of situations that millions of them find themselves living in day after day, it's pretty reasonable to assume that quite a few of them aren't going to be smiling whether I send the email back to my friend or not. What would they care? I'm sure that if you were somehow able to ask those people what would make them smile, a hot meal or an end to the conflicts that threaten their very existence on a daily basis would rank far higher on the list than the fat guy in Iowa getting his chain letter back. So please, next time you think about hitting forward to pass on the nice letter, think about what it actually says, and think about how much more you could do to make the people around you smile.

Quote Of The Day
"White people...we CANNOT be black. It's not possible. We cannot "wave our hands in the air, and wave 'em like we just don't care!"
We, as white folks must "raise our digits vertically and oscillate them like we fear no repercussions." We are corny, white people. Fuckin' embrace it. We can't "drop it like it's hot." White people all dance weird, kind of like Elaine from Seinfeld."

Another Reason To Love Record Companies
It seems that the recording industry has found a way to pay off the settlement that came out of the price-fixing lawsuit that it lost a couple of years back. The labels have decided to
donate
all of the crap that nobody is buying to libraries and schools, leaving the poor librarians and educators to figure out what in hell they're going to do with 20 copies of Christina Aguilera's Christmas album among other greatness that they've been receiving by the boxfull over the past few months, greatness that they're going to keep receiving until sometime around June of this year.
I don't really have much to say about this story, I just found it interesting, and parts of it are pretty funny, like the woman who's trying to play the optimist by saying that they'll have more than enough Ricky Martin albums to ensure that everybody who visits the bookmobile gets one.

Just Shut Up
I'm not sure why
this news story
makes me so angry, but it does. Maybe it's because I've never been able to figure out why anybody takes the time to give even a quarter of a shit what a fashion critic thinks about anything. I mean seriously, fashion critic has to be one of the most useless occupations on the planet. What purpose do they serve? What function do they perform that contributes to the betterment or entertainment of society? Their entire job is telling people that they're clothes look stupid. Oh wait, they also get to write about the fact that people's clothes look stupid. That's all they do, and people pay them for it. It's ridiculous. If you want to make fun of the way someone looks, become a comedian instead, otherwise just shut your stupid mouth and go away and stop shitting on one of the few truly well intentioned ideas that any government has had in a long time.

You Are Here?
Before I start making fun of people who search for strange things, let me say this. Anybody who thinks that those floating flash ads are a good idea and uses them on their websites deserves a big kick in the nuts, even if that person happens to be a girl. Now on with the show.
We've got a really weird selection of search terms this time out, some of the strangest I've ever seen, so let's get down to business.
19 Mar, Sat, 18:35:02
Yahoo:
nude sighties
You know, I for one think it's great that blind people are out on the net looking for porn like everyone else. That's the right attitude, don't let anything get you down, try to stay as upbeat as possible.
17 Mar, Thu, 15:22:48
Yahoo:
free fat bitchs
You know, I for one think that we absolutely should, and that all of those among us who have the nerve to capture them should be ashamed of themselves.
02 Apr, Sat, 12:25:44
Yahoo:
paralyzed+disabled people having sex=pictures
Perhaps I should have paid more attention, but I don't recall that equation ever coming up in any math class I've ever been in. I guess the old saying is true, you learn something new every day.
27 Mar, Sun, 16:52:16
Yahoo:
nanny-goat genitals
I'm going to hold out hope that the person who searched that is a veterinarian. Then again, if you're a professional and you're getting your research materials from a place called the Vomet Comet, maybe that's not so good after all.
Here come a couple for the good folks working in the What The Fuck Department.
30 Mar, Wed, 17:19:44
Google: "
white tiger" "halloween costume" gay guy picture fangs
It almost seems like this guy was trying to be super efficient by searching for 2 things at the same time. Not a bad idea, it's too bad it didn't quite work out.
04 Apr, Mon, 03:08:51
Yahoo:
hockey+tournament+five+dollar+dildo+show
I've got nothin', let's move on.
08 Apr, Fri, 15:18:42
Yahoo:
PRISSY BIGGOTS
I had to throw this one in just because I've never seen those 2 words together before.
08 Apr, Fri, 10:18:17
Yahoo:
sucking cock in oshawa
I had to throw this one in for the benefit of the people who've been wondering what Matt's been up to these days.
And finally, we have this.
27 Apr, Wed, 19:11:43
Yahoo: "
shoe penis"
Would that be a penis shaped like a shoe? A shoe shaped like a penis? A shoe that you could wear on your penis? A kick from a shoe to a penis? So many questions, so little time.
And just like that, we're done. We'll do this again soon though, don't worry. the only thing I don't like about this bit is coming up with good endings for it. That's always been a pain in the ass. I guess I could always just not bother. Yeah, good idea.

I Beg To Differ
Minneapolis Minnesota's chief of police wants the government to
License the city's beggars
because he feels that something needs to be done to help police deal with aggressive panhandling.
I think I can almost understand the logic behind this, but having said that, there are 2 really simple reasons why a system like this would never work.
First of all, what good does putting them in jail do, they're homeless for God sakes. They'll probably live better in jail than they do now, and not only that, but they'd be living there for free. There's quite a threat to hang over the head of somebody who lives in a box. "If you don't obey this new law, we'll put a roof over your head and feed you 3 free meals a day. Oh and we might also give you a job and pay you honest to goodness American money for doing it. We're serious mister, so you'd better straighten up and fly right or it's off to the big house for you." Yeah, that'll teach those panhandling pricks a thing or 2. Probably scare them right off the streets in fact. Good thinkin' Chief, you're a friggin genius!
And secondly, ask yourself this question. If somebody happens to violate the terms of the new law, how is that person going to get the money to pay the fine? You don't have to be a super genius to figure that one out.
But even though there are such obvious glaring problems with this idea, I'll bet that there'll be at least 1 politician in the area willing to "take a look at it," which frightens me. It also angers me, but more because in general people in government can never just come right out and say that something is a bad idea, or better yet, that it's just plain stupid. And even on those rare occasions when somebody does, he or she either feels the need to apologize for what was said or is more than happy to completely change positions on the issue the moment that there's something to be gained by doing so.
But I shouldn't have to tell you all of this. Politicians have done more than enough to earn the reputation they have on their own, and I'm sure they don't need me to point it out and talk it up. So instead I'll just go to bed and watch American Justice. Considering the circumstances, it kind of seems appropriate.

Of All The Times To Be Right...
Somebody emailed me this riddle today. Read it and see if you can get the right answer.
A woman was attending her mother's funeral and met a man she didn't know. She thought he was amazing and she fell in love with him immediately. When the funeral was over he disappeared, and the woman did not get his phone number. Nobody knew who he was and she couldn't contact him. A couple of days later she killed her sister.
Question: What was her motive for killing her sister?
The email says that you should think long and hard about your answer but as it turns out, I had it right even before I read that instruction which is weird because generally I suck at these things and hardly ever get them right. Half the time they don't even make sense to me after I know the answer. Yeah, I'm retarded, shut up.
The email also says that the situation we're dealing with here was created by a psychologist and that a lot of people tend to get it wrong, a fact that will become important in a minute when I give you the answer.
Ok, now that you've had some time to think about this, here it comes.
ANSWER: She was hoping the man would turn up at the funeral again.
So for a second I'm thinking hey cool, I nailed that one. But then I read on and saw this:
If you got the right answer, you think like a psychopath. This was a test from a famous American psychologist which was used to see if you were thinking like a murderer.
Many serial killers who participated in the test got the right answer.
Sure, this thing probably isn't legit, but still, the one time I feel like I've won the game, I still lose. It makes me so mad that I could just...oh never mind.

Irony Rules
So how is everybody? Good? No? Yes? Whatever, let's just get on with this.
I wish I could figure out what the hell is up with the weather these days. Last week it was amazingly Summerish, then over the weekend there was snow on the ground and yesterday was just cold and crappy, but today was one of the strangest weather days I can remember. When I woke up this morning it was raining pretty hard, when I left the house the rain had stopped but it seemed like it might start up again, when I left the radio station it was windy as hell, and then when I got off of the bus to walk home the sun was shining and it felt like a nice Spring day. And now according to my little computerized weather thingie it is currently 15 degrees outside. That's celsius, not Fahrenheit, I should probably mention that so that all the Americans don't start freaking out. But seriously guys, that shit ain't right. We aren't supposed to have 3 seasons in as many days, we just aren't, and I think that 2 in 1 day is a little much too. But the more of this craziness I live through, the more sense
Lewis Black
makes. If you've ever listened to any of his albums, you'll know what I mean.
"This is great Steve," I hear you saying, "but what does you bitching about the weather have to do with irony?"
"Nothing," I reply, "but I'm writing this article and I'll make casual conversation if I feel like it. But since I sort of promised irony in the title of the post, I guess I should talk about it, so here goes."
Carin was talking yesterday about how in our city they're messing with everything and have decided to
move the bus system to a new spot
until they're finished. The whole situation is a huge pain in the ass, and she's right, nobody can agree on what exactly it is they're doing there. I've asked 6 or 7 different people myself and gotten as many different answers. The purpose of the construction seems to change about as much as the weather in this stupid town, but enough about that. I've heard everything from they're putting in new street lamps to it's a wiring job to my personal favourite, "hell if I know." That one came from somebody who works for transit here in the city. You've gotta respect honesty like that.
But speaking of the transit system, here comes your irony. When I found out that everything was being moved around, I called them to ask about whether or not there were any scheduling changes because when you're trying to get somewhere on time, that's kind of important to know. The woman on the phone told me that they were having a lot of trouble with busses arriving late but that I should plan to get to the stop at my usual time just in case. Well, it's a really good thing I listened and it's even better that I've kept listening since because every bus I've taken since this mess started has been more on time than any of the others that I've taken in the entire 5 years that I've lived here.
See, irony rules, just like I said. And it gets better, even though this one has nothing to do with busses or me.
According to
this story,
one of the people on Michael Jackson's potential defence witnesses list was arrested last week for having sex with an under-age girl. The man, 18-year-old Ahmad Elatab, was charged with sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and impairing the morals of a minor.
I have nothing more to add to that, other than like I've already said, irony rules.
I'm going to do something else now, I'll talk to you all later.

What Does Freedom-Fighter Mean to You?
No, this isn't even remotely close to deep or political. The deepest it goes is, wow people are out of it in my town.
There's this weird coffee store near me. It's kind of a cool place. There's a grinder working all the time, and they get blends of coffee that are supposedly made in fair-trade working conditions so little kids aren't being forced to pick beans and make stuff, etc. Since I'm graduating, I was buying some gifts for some people who have helped me along the way, and I know one of them likes coffee from this store. So I go in there to get him a gift basket. I ask what kind of gift baskets they have, and they tell me they have this one where you get two different kinds of coffee, a chocolate bar, and some tea. Now, here's my point. The two most popular kinds of coffee they have are Freedom-Fighter, and Chatty Matty.
Chatty Matty I follow, especially if it's espresso. But what does Freedom-Fighter make you think? To me, it makes me think terrorist. Isn't that what some terrorists call themselves?
Unable to contain myself, I call the store, blocking my number of course. I ask them what's in the coffee called Freedom-Fighter. She flatly says, "It's a blend of Guatemalan and Peruvian coffee." Surprised that she doesn't want to know why I'm curious, I can't leave it alone. I say, "the reason I'm curious is because when I think Freedom-Fighter, I think terrorist, and can't figure out how coffee and terrorists go together." The reaction is, well, priceless! First it was.."I've never had anyone ask me that before." then "Um, I didn't name it...." Then it's "I never thought about it..." then it's "well, I guess you can take it any way you want to...I just think someone's fighting for their freedom." After assuring her that I wasn't appalled or anything, just more laughing than anything else, and saying that was the only reason I called, I let the poor befuddled clerk go.
Then I got to thinking, wow, people in this town really live in bubbles. Think about it. If it is one of their most popular blends of coffee, how can at least one other person have not asked that question? Do people not think any more? And, how can it have never crossed her mind that freedom-fighter means terrorist to most people, unless she's lived under a rock and never heard the term except in the context of coffee? Part of me says she reacted that way because she's getting paid by the store, and so, to protect their good name, she sort of played dumb. But oh no, the amount of shock and complete surprise in her reaction tells me she honestly had never had that idea float into her head. It just surprises me. I admit that I don't read and watch as much news as I should, but I at least have a general understanding of what's going on around me!

Confusion Square?
Well, the people in the city where I live sure know how to make things interesting. For some unknown reason that no one can agree on, they've decided to rip apart the main hub of downtown. Some say it's to fix sewer pipes, some say it's to put in phone lines, some just stare mystified at all the fenses and barricades and go, "What the hell?" At any rate, they've basically ripped up the place where buses usually come in.
Ok, fine, it had to be done. Glad they're fixing something, whatever they're fixing. So they've moved the place where buses come in to another set of four corners. Cool. But here's the part where I get confused. At this new place, they didn't bother to tell people which bus goes where. And they don't seem to have kept the same configuration of buses. So it's really hillarious to watch, because I'm just as confused as the rest of the world. Now, on top of basically having their routes turned on their heads, and apparently having to drive around looking for a place to park, the poor frazzled bus drivers are left answering an endless string of "which bus is this?" or "Is this where this bus comes in?" You'd think the least they could do is put up a few temporary signs. Oh well, at least they didn't shut down the whole bus system. That would have sucked so huge. And for now, when I look lost, I'll just look like everybody else.

They Really Should Have Known Better
This is what happens when you tell soccer fans to riot.
I'm not sure what they expected would happen, but they got what they deserved. And is it really a good idea to offer free beer to people insane enough to attend a soccer match? Just curious.

Ok, This Is Just Strange
If you're planning a trip to Germany, you might want to pack a raincoat and a helmet. And no, Helmet isn't some German guy either.
Apparently parks in the city of Hamburg are being faced with a very unusual problem,
exploding toads.
Nobody seems to know why it's happening, but over the past 4 days, over 1000 toads have spontaneously exploded in various city parks sending entrails flying into the sky and leaving body parts scattered everywhere.
Nature protection worker Werner Smolnik described it this way:
"You see the toads crawling along the ground, swelling and getting bigger as they go until they are like little tennis balls, and then they suddenly explode."
Personally I think they should make some kind of tour out of this. I'm sure that a fair number of people would pay good money to watch toads blow up. I know I'd give some thought to going and I'm sure I could find a few people to come along.

Hope I Didn't Jynx It
Wow the weather is psycho. I'd just started to think that spring was here to stay. I'd been saying to people, wow, I think spring is really here. We actually didn't have too many return visits from Old Man Winter! Perhaps I said that too many times, because I woke up to a nasty surprise! There was snow on the grass! Nooo! It doesn't seem fair after the almost summer weather we had just last week! All I have to say is it better get gone real fast.

"I have lurnt WordPerfect 6.0 computor and spreadsheat progroms."
"Received a plague for Salesperson of the Year."
"Reason for leaving last job: Maturity leave."
"Wholly responsible for two (2) failed financial institutions."
"Failed bar exam with relatively high grades."
"It's best for employers that I not work with people."
"Let's meet, so you can 'ooh' and 'aah' over my experience."
"You will want me to be Head Honcho in no time."
"Am a perfectionist and rarely if if ever forget details."
"I was working for my mom until she decided to move."
"Marital status: Single. Unmarried. Unengaged. Uninvolved. No commitments."
"I have an excellent track record, although I am not a horse."
"I am loyal to my employer at all costs... Please feel free to respond to my resume on my office voice mail."
"I have become completely paranoid, trusting completely no one and absolutely nothing."
"My goal is to be a meteorologist. But since I possess no training in meteorology, I suppose I should try stock brokerage."
"I procrastinate, especially when the task is unpleasant."
"Personal interests: donating blood. Fourteen gallons so far."
"Instrumental in ruining entire operation for a Midwest chain store."
"Note: Please don't misconstrue my 14 jobs as "job-hopping." I have never quit a job."
"Marital status: often. Children: various."
"Reason for leaving last job: They insisted that all employees get to work by 8:45 every morning. Could not work under those conditions."
"The company made me a scapegoat, just like my three previous employers."
"Finished eighth in my class of ten."
"References: None. I've left a path of destruction behind me."

4 Things
1. Go read
this.
Somebody sent some hatemail to Five For Fighting and the guy who is the whole band actually wrote him back. It doesn't end up being much of an exchange and Mr. For Fighting ended up being pretty cool about the whole thing, but the email he was sent is really funny so check it out anyway.
2. Note to the
Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Change your name, immediately! This one makes you sound like some sort of homosexual theatre troop. Don't get mad, I'm just trying to look out for you.
3. On the news tonight there was a story about a new hospital that will specialize in burn injuries. That got me to thinking, has there ever been a report of a fire in one of those places? I can't remember ever hearing one, but maybe one of you can. If so, let me know. You get extra points if the building burned completely to the ground.
4. We are currently testing our public address system to ensure that everything is in working order and that all equipment will respond properly in an emergency situation. We kindly ask that anyone who cannot hear this announcement contact us immediately. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

What's Up with That?
I've noticed lately when I hear commercials for dog and cat food, they talk about the taste. How it tastes better than ever, how it's the best food ever taste-wise. My question is, how do they know? It's not like you can ask fido or spot which food he likes better and get a definitive answer. And, if they're not asking fido or spot, are humans eating it and being the judge? If so, I hope they're well-paid. that's absolutely disgusting. The only other explanation, and the most likely one, is that it's a load of bullshit. Who the hell knows if it tastes better? Unless they tell me how they know, they're stringing me a line.
I remember the old days when commercials for pet food made sense. They talked about how much protein was in them, how they were recommended by vets, etc. That could still be bullshit, but it's believable bullshit. This shit about taste? Whatever.
It must be because the pet-owning population has gone sappy. They want to be assured that what they feed spot tastes good to him. Face it, pet taste buds are different than yours. Just accept that their food likely tastes like ass, and don't be so gullible!

Post Title Goes Here
Hey everybody. Sorry for not posting anything since Friday, though I'm not sure how sorry I should be since it's not like you didn't have anything to read. Big ups to Carin for keeping things going while I've been lazy, and for helping out in general. That's really cool of her and I appreciate it.
I can totally relate to the whole song thing even though I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. But it's weird hearing stuff that you listened to as a young kid and realizing how much deeper a meaning things have and how much you really didn't understand even though you thought everything made perfect sense. Same goes for things like TV shows and movies and comedy routines. No matter how much you really did get, or thought you got back then, there's always more to understand. But when you stop and think about it, everything in life is that way. There's always more to figure out. Wow, that was heavy. I apologize.
While we're talking site business and things that go on here, feel free to check out the ads if you like what we're doing. Good things happen when you do that.
Does anybody remember Matt? I'm just curious because nobody's asking me where he is, how he's doing and whether or not he still writes here anymore. I'm not complaining, I'm just noticing is all.
Ok, here come a few random thoughts...
Am I the only one who thinks that they should rename Smokey the Bear? You might think I'm nuts, but I honestly can't figure out how he became so successful in the PSA business with a name like that. I mean it would make sense if he worked for the tobacco lobby, but he doesn't. He's the fire prevention bear and maybe it's just me, but a name like Smokey sort of implies that something went horribly wrong at some point. And if at this point you feel like writing in to tell me how Smokey got his name, don't waste your time because I already know and my opinion still stands. If you can't figure out why I feel that way, read
this
and then try to tell me that it's not even a little bit mean spirited. After all, there's a reason why you never see Choppy the Chimp speaking out about the destruction of the rainforest or Timmy the Tumour campaigning for cancer awareness. It's just wrong. But having said that, I still can't help but think that Crispy the Caterpillar was completely overlooked during spokesanimal interviews.
But maybe it's time to retire Smokey anyway. He's gone through enough. He's suffered with that awful name for over 50 years now and I for one think he deserves to live out the rest of his days not having to be constantly reminded of how he was almost burned to death but was then captured by a bunch of do gooders, named after his tragic accident and then exploited for the majority of his existence because an ever-increasing number of retards don't know how to look after a camp fire. We owe him that much.
So the question now becomes if he does retire, who will replace him? I'd say Crispy the Caterpillar but that would just put us back where we started with the whole naming thing and besides, he soured on the whole industry years ago. So no, that won't do at all. Personally I think we should go with either Hydrant the Hound Dog or Water Bomber the Worm, either of whom would more accurately reflect the prevention message that we're trying to get across. I would have said "trying to spread," but that would have been a little too ironic.
There's a player in the NBA named Darko. I find that really funny, but maybe that's just my racist side talking.
But speaking of racism, I heard something on the radio this morning that really got on my nerves. There was a story on the news about a guy who tried to lure a teenaged girl into his car by following her as she walked home and repeatedly asking her if she needed a ride. The story went on to describe the suspect as a "non-white" male." What the hell is that? Have we really "progressed" so much as a society that instead of talking about what colour somebody is, we have to talk about which ones he isn't even in cases where lives could potentially be saved? Non-white is about as helpful as non-blue or non-Asian in a situation like that. Why not tell us who we *are* looking for instead of who we don't have to worry about?
And by the way, there's something you never hear, non-Asian. And you never hear somebody talking about their non-gay friends either. And when was the last time you heard somebody refer to you as a non-asshole? Probably never, because it sounds ridiculous. Non-white is one of those terms that guilty white people came up with in a pathetic attempt to make themselves feel a little less discriminatory. Nothing more, nothing less. It means nothing, and it makes you sound like a prick. Seriously folks, this political correctness has gone insane, and it needs to stop. So if all of you could do me a small favour I'd appreciate it. IF you ever find yourself in the company of someone who uses the term non-white in a serious context, I want you to non-refrain from punching that person right in the goddamn head. Thank you and good day.
I'll be back with more later, and I bet that Carin will probably have more to say at some point too, so stay tuned, or whatever you're supposed to stay to a website. We're not TV or radio, so tuned doesn't work...any ideas? But yeah, more stuff coming soon. I've got a bunch of new searches that need to be put together and who knows what I'll come across or what will land in my email between now and then so stay...somethinged.

Old Songs and Being a Kid
When you were a kid, do you remember, along with the goofy kids' songs you heard, you listened to your parents' records? I know I did, some of them obsessively. I don't even know why, I guess because mom and dad liked them. But I would even ask to listen to them! And now that I'm older, and hear some of the stuff I listened to, and recited more than likely, I'm surprised mom and dad never put a stop to it.
Here's an example. Does anyone else remember the song "Ruby" by Kenny Rogers? I remember when I first heard it, I had no idea what it was about. How could I, I was only 3 or 4. Anyway, my parents live out in the country, and mom used to always get annoyed that dad always wanted to go to town to go shopping and "run the roads"as she called it, and never help out around the house. So, I just thought the guy was mad that his wife was going to town all the time. Not quite! How about he's a Vietnam vet who's pretty much on death's door and his wife's always off screwing other guys.
And the worst part was I probably memorized it and sang it along with the record, and who knows where else. It's really weird. I remember every word of that song, even though I didn't really realize their meaning. I hadn't heard that song since being a little kid, and I heard it the other day on an oldies station. And every line came back to me only in the form of a string of meaningless syllables. That's a weird experience. Has anyone else had that happen? And then you realize what the song means, and you can't help but laugh at yourself and wonder how many people you freaked out for knowing that song and singing it.
I remember making my grandma mad for singing that Ghetto song by Elvis. I had never seen her mad before, but holy crap I was forbidden to sing those words in her house. And I still remember something that every time I think about, I cringe. I remember vividly singing "Let's Get Physical" by Olivia Newton-John to a bunch of people. Ug! I had no idea what I was singing. I remember the line about hearing your body talk. I had so many talking things that I was like, "hmmm a talking body? Neat!" God I was such a stupid kid. Did anyone else do this? Or have I just exposed that I was the stupidest kid on the planet?

Update on the Screaming Freak
Remember the other day when I wrote that crazy post about that guy who wouldn't leave the bus unless he got his TV, oh so sorry, TV-VCR combo back that he left on the other bus? Remember when I thought he could have shot somebody? Well I wasn't far off. My friend ran into him downtown, and overheard him talking. It turns out he's a crack dealer! Or was doing some less than cool things anyway. Whatever he is, he's stupid, talking about his stuff in a pretty obvious place in a pretty obvious way, or maybe he's smoked too much of his product. Anyway, woe that was close. I hope I never run into him again. Well at the rate he's going, he'll tell the wrong person how much crack he's got real soon and I won't have to worry about it. And it sure makes me wonder if he really spent $150 on that TV-VCR combo after all.

Let's All Hope for My Neighbour!
Well, today I found out that what I was afraid of was happening. A long time ago, I heard that my neighbour had cancer, but that he had fought it off before, it had come back, and he was sure he would fight it again. It seemed that he was doing it. Then the doctors put him on a clinical trial of a drug. I started to notice that he was going through longer and longer times where he just didn't seem as well. Today I asked him how things were going. He says the cancer is spreading, and the clinical trial isn't working. Let's all hope that when they start him back on the other stuff, that he'll get better! It's really freaky to watch someone who was so full of life still trying to do everything, but he just doesn't have the same strength. If he talks too long, he just has to stop because it's so painful. It kills me to watch such a good person going down hill and being helpless to do anything to stop it. So let's all hope he gets better!

Holy Crap!
Well, here I go again, boring you with the mundane details of my life. But as I sit here, sort of studying, sort of daydreaming, the stunning realization hits me like a brick that just over 12 hours from now, I will have done all the work for my whole B.A! and provided that some other hidden pocket of the university doesn't want money from me, or I don't royally bomb these exams, it will be mine! I can't believe it. Six years of work has come to an end...and has coughed me out confused and looking around wondering what the next step is. I mean I know the next immediate step is going for this guide dog, but what does my future hold? The future freaks me out! That's all I know!
It's funny. I can't make up my mind. I have counted the days for this to get here. I have wanted so badly to see the end. Now it's here, and I'm happy, and want to celebrate, but there's a part of me that's so completely confused and kicking myself really hard for not laying out more concrete plans for the next move, and wondering exactly what I'm going to do. I mean I have vague ideas, I just hope I can bring them to a more specific focus. And there's another part of me that regrets not making more connections with more people. A lot of my friends and people I knew have left the city to go either back home or to other cities. Oh well, it will come together somehow. It's just really weird to be standing on the edge of one big piece of the structure of my life as it crumbles. I mean I've gone to school since I was like 4! It's freaky to think of it that way.
Ok, I should shake myself. Yick! I sound like a whining sniveling baby. It should be fine. It's just a little freaky to watch it all end.

You Wanna Go Where Everybody Knows Your Name?
Well I seem to have gone there. It's pretty wacky to walk down the street, like I did this morning, and have someone come up to me and say, "Well if it isn't Carin with a C!" At this point I'm trying to figure out who they are, and how they know me. This happens to me all the time, and I feel like such a terminal tool every time I have no idea who they are. Part of me says,if they know me so well, why don't I know them? Even freakier, some of them know where I live. For some, I understand why. Of course a cabby is going to know where I live. but it's pretty weird when I accidentally pass the walk to my house and some random person yells, you passed it! It's really cute, I just wish I could have a better memory of who these people are so I don't have to either look like a complete jerk or a person gone senile way too young.

It's happening'!
Well, way back in October, I wrote about getting a guide dog. After several months of sitting on my ass, and then a shitload of paperwork, it's actually starting to come to reality. And ya know what the irony of it is? I'm going to the school whose package I didn't like at first glance! But that's where I'm going, and by the end of next month, I will have my very own guide dog! Some people joke that it will be a guide chihuahua since I'm so short. Who knows. Well I don't think it'll be a chihuahua, but I don't know what kind of dog it is. They won't even tell me that much! They like keeping things a mystery.
So hopefully while I'm there I'll have time to write a post or two. I don't leave until the 9th of May, but that's when I'm planning to go! So that's the doggy scoop. I'm still in disbelief that it's actually happening, and can't believe I'm going to go live in a guide dog school for about 3 weeks! Wish me luck, hope I don't go crazy, and hope my guide dog doesn't have a dumb name!

The Freaks On the Bus Go Scream Scream Scream
Wow. That was an interesting bus ride home. I'm glad I don't live in the states, because maybe if I did, this wouldn't be a happy post.
I'm sitting on the bus, well in the bus, because if I were on the bus I wouldn't be on it for long. So anyway I'm riding the bus, and we come to this stop and this guy gets on, or should I say, puts his feet on the steps. " Sir, sir, you need to stop that bus." he says with a certain urgency. "Sir, tell that bus to stop! Sir!" The bus driver, confused, asks him what's the problem. I'm thinking he must have a baby on that bus or something. He says, "I had a TV, a TV-VCR combo, and I left it on that bus! I don't want someone to go home with it! You're going to tell that bus to stop!" The driver gets on the radio and asks if anyone has a TV on their bus. The man barks, "TV-VCR combo!" He's standing there, and the driver tells him he's not getting a response. The man flies into a rage. "No, you can't say it wasn't on the bus! You can't! You can't say it wasn't there it was there! Tell that bus too stop! It just dropped me off! Tell the bus driver to hold on to it for me. I can wait! Tell him to bring it back!" The bus driver asks him if it was a lady or a man bus driver. AT this point, our lune flies into another fit of rage. "What does it matter? I can't remember! Lady or a man bus driver! I don't know!" At this point, he's leaning in towards the bus driver, the bus has been stopped through this whole escapade, and he's bossing him around. "You tell that bus to come back! The one that just drove by! You tell him to come back and bring back my TV! My TV! You tell him to bring it back!" The bus driver is completely taken aback by this whole thing. he eventually tells him he cant' help him, he'll have to call transit and uses the doors to push him off the steps, or somehow makes him leave even though he didn't want to, all the while, you can hear the guy going, my TV! The last thing I heard, which killed me was, "I spent $150 on that TV!"
I just couldn't believe that, all over something worth $150 that *he* left on the bus because *he* screwed up. Now here he was stopping a whole bus, trying to stop another one and make it change routes, all because he left it on the bus! Some gall! Like get on the bus, ride down to the square and track down your TV there. I was just glad he didn't have a gun, because he had enough rage that I thought he might have shot someone.

I'm Frightened
I had the TV on, and on came an ad for something called Fruit2O. It was apparently fruit-flavoured water that doesn't have any juice and is 0 calories. They call it fresh-picked water. So what exactly is that? It says doing something good for yourself never tasted so good. But what exactly are you putting in your body?
This is the way I feel about it. Either drink water, or drink juice! If ya want water, drink water. If ya want something fruity, drink juice. At least you know that most of what you're drinking is what it says it is. I was so freaked out that I went to their website. They say it's water with "fruit escences" but they never explain what those are...and I haven't found an ingredient list except that it has splenda in it, not sugar. They did make one good point. People with diabetes can drink this and it supposedly won't mess with their sugar levels. Cool...but what is it? According to the website, it's not sold in Canada yet. Maybe that's a good thing. God, things are getting so weird now. We've got chemicals to wash our vegetables to clean off other chemicals, vitamins to take to undo damage of diet pills, and now water that doesn't taste like water!

Well Whooda Thunk It?
Today I was running around doing errands, and since I'm hoping to graduate this year, I decided to tie up loose ends. I received a nice snippy email from the university that said, "well we're acknowledging that we received your application to graduate, but don't expect to be let out if you have any library fines, parking fines, outstanding fees at financial services, or any other crap on your record there young lady!" So I toddled over to the library to make sure I didn't have any fines. I was pretty sure I didn't have any, because the way I use the library is for journal articles most of the time, so it doesn't require any books being taken out. But this nagging voice said, "You did take a couple books out, so you might have something, who knows."
And ya know what? I did have a fine. Apparently two years ago, I was late to return a video. So they fined me 5 bucks. Thank god fines don't accumulate interest. Otherwise I might have to pay a small fortune, after having paied a small fortune already.
I love how universities work. Everywhere else in the known universe, if you owe something, if you don't pay it after a while, you get a friendly nudging letter saying, "Hey! Numbnuts! Pay your fine!" But not the university. It's like they're just waiting for you to not realize that you have a $5 fine so they can say, "you can't graduate now, that'll be $90 please, cha ching, ha ha ha ha ha." I'm just glad I listen to my nagging voices. They just saved my butt.

Hey Big Spender!
I just heard the funniest thing on the radio as I was coming home on the bus. The local radio station is holding a contest where some DJ names a random product on the Mcdonalds menu, and if someone can remember it hours later, and calls in, they win...wait for it...dinner for 4 at Mcdonalds! Like holy man. I know Mcdonalds food is overpriced, but a radio station? Giving away dinner for 4 at Mcdonalds? What's next, a Tim Horton's coffee as the prize?
Hey, winning is cool. I'm just picturing this family going to Mcdonalds to claim their prize. Will they take it through the drive-through? I mean usually dinner prizes are to nice restaurants. So as a special occasion, you go out courtesy of the radio station. But Mcdonalds? What would make it even funnier is if it was a dinner for two at Mcdonalds. I can hear it now. "Have a nice romantic evening on us. We love to see you smile."

Wow, That Sounds Like Fun
I'm so glad that my Sesame Street watching days came when the show's creators still realized that cartoons could be educational and fun at the same time.
According to
this story,
the show's new season will feature a new health craze that goes so far that Cookie Monster can't even be Cookie Monster anymore because kids apparently don't understand that a cartoon character eating cookies like a maniac isn't real which would in turn send the message to them that they should be doing the same thing. And in related news, I just put a down payment on a new trash can so I can be just like Oscar the Grouch, because if he can live in one then dammit, why can't I?
Seriously, where does this sort of stupidity end? Are they going to take Oscar out of his garbage can because it might send the message that homeless people who happen to live in one are pissed off all the time? Come to think of it, they probably are, but that's beside the point. The point is that Sesame Street shouldn't have to or even want to do this. I mean if you aren't spending even the minimal time required with your own children to teach them the difference between real and pretend, then maybe you shouldn't have any to begin with. It's not Sesame Street's job to raise your kids, it's yours. and to me, if you don't have time to do a little better than a half assed job of it, you don't respect your children enough to miss them when somebody with more sense takes them away from you, so what do you care?
It sounds harsh I know, but I'm sick and tired of negligent parents blaming everything and everyone but themselves for how their kids turned out. I understand that there's such a thing as outside influences, but Jesus Christ, do your parental duty and try your best to keep them in check and balanced out. You owe them at least that much.

I've Heard Of Stranger Things Than This, But It's Still Weird
A man from Senegal has invented what he's calling an automatic condom fitter that he claims will make it easier for guys to put on a condom without ruining the flow of the action and spoiling the mood. Mor Maty Seck, the inventor in question, also claims that with enough practice a man can use the device without the woman even realizing it. Uh...sure.

And While We're at it...
When Steve wrote his Jehova's Witness post, he reminded me of something I thought up a while ago. Do you ever wonder if the Jehova's Witnesses were the ones who came up with the idea of telemarketing? Think about it. Telemarketers and Jehova's Witnesses like to harass you in your home, particularly at times when they think everyone will be home. They both get rewarded for how many people they convert, whether it be to the Watchtower or to Sprint. They're both very pushy and don't take no for an answer very easily. Neither of them have much regard for holidays. By the sounds of it, both are pretty highly monitored, and get told what to do in a lot of respects. And some telemarketers even try and get your address so they can mail you an information package, where the Jehova's Witness tries to leave behind a copy of the Watchtower! The more I think about it, the more it seems like they've been behind this all along. It's been a big conspiracy. Anyone else convinced yet?

When You Absolutely, Positively Have To Fall Asleep Right Now
Greg just pointed me in the direction of what could easily be the most boring thing I've ever had the misfortune of experiencing. Golf. But not just any golf, we're talking about golf that's being broadcasted on the radio.
Seriously, if you click
here,
you can listen to Masters Radio, hosted by guys who make watching paint dry sound like a dandy night on the town.
Your hosts are some British guy who talks about nothing for as long as he possibly can before throwing it to a not British guy who is talking so quietly that you can't hear a goddamn word he says, and who seems to be so hard up for action to call that he's perfectly willing to spend 4 minutes talking about a shot that Tiger Woods is almost but not quite ready to make.
And as if that weren't bad enough, when they throw it to a commercial break, the internet audience is treated to some other lame guy in the broadcast centre who's job it is to review everything we just heard about in the dullest way possible until the other guys get back from the can or the food wagon, or wherever boring guys go when they have a few minutes to kill. Maybe they just stand there talking to one another about what's happening, who knows?
But whatever the case, I challenge all of you to try to listen to this stuff for more than 5 minutes. It's harder than it sounds, trust me.

Jehovah's Witness Aptitude Test
If you've ever wondered whether or not being a Jehovah's Witness is for you, here's a
handy quiz
that can tell you.
Apparently I'm only 17% capable of being one, since I place too much value on personal freedom of choice and generally don't like church much, 2 things that signify an attitude problem.

Ok, I'm Officially Creeped Out
I've seen a lot of crazy and disgusting things in my time, but I think
this
is right up near the top.
You'd think that with a title like "Natural Harvest Cooking: An inspirational collection of semen based recipes," that "Cooking With Cum – The Book!" couldn't possibly be for real. Well at least that's what I thought until I looked it up and couldn't find anything saying that it wasn't. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough or something but the serious references I found to it in other places kind of frightened me into not doing any further investigating.
I dare you to click the link and read what they have to say, even though part of their site is gone because of some bandwidth problems. What they left up pretty much explains what's going on there.
And if any of you get the urge so to speak, feel free to email them and ask what's so inspirational about spunking on a bran muffin.

The Incredible Popeman
Here's proof that all of the best drugs really do come from Colombia. the Pope is going to be starring in his own comic book series. Entitled "Incredible Popeman," the comics will feature the late JP 2.0 fighting against evil, decked out in his anti-devil cape and special chastity pants, which I'm guessing he wears to protect himself from the advances of any other super hero clergy he might meet along the way.
Along with the comics, Popeman's creators also have action figures in the works.
You can
to check this out for yourselves. Just remember that these people are probably going to hell because laughing at the Pope most likely isn't cool yet according to the rules set forth by people without a sense of humour.

Something You Don't See Every Day
I don't know how bizarre anyone else will think this is, but I thought it was pretty weird. I had to go to an ophthalmologist, yes, I found one that wasn't for dogs, and he was even in this city, wow! Anyway, I came in and went to the secretary. She asked me the usual questions, and asked for my health card. She took it, and started to type...on a typewriter! That's right. Not on a computer. On a typewriter. I haven't seen one of those in an office since...hmmm...when? A long time ago anyway. Part of me wondered if my ears were deceiving me and it was just that clunky fake typing noise that programs like ICQ make. But oh no, it was the real thing. I got to thinking, if they can't afford a computer for the secretary, what's the state of their eye-checking equipment? I was very glad all I needed was for him to look at me and realize that I was just about as blind as they come. Anyway, it was just something weird I was thinking about as I write the last paper ever for my degree, so I thought I'd share it.
Wrestlemania Results
Yeah, I'm posting this a little bit late, but if you're looking for ongoing results of Wrestlemania, check out

Wrestlemania Roundtable
Tonight is WWE's biggest show of the year, and since the Salty Ham server is actually working today, today is also the day when Roland pastes together emails that a bunch of us sent him to create a feature that has come to be known as the PPV Roundtable. And since what we're roundtabling just so happens to be Wrestlemania, it's only fitting that this one is also known as the
Wrestlemania 21 Roundtable.
Go have a look at who I picked for the big event tonight and feel free to agree or disagree. A bunch of other people picked too, but since they're all going to be wrong and I'm going to win in a landslide they really don't matter too much even though they're good people.

Waaa Waaa Waaa
I don't get this. Every year when it's time to spring ahead with the clocks, I hear the classic complaint. "We lose an hour of sleep." This is what I don't get. Sure we lose an hour of sleep, for a little while, but what we gain is several hours of light for months! Ever heard the expression short-term pain for long-term gain? And we don't even lose it on a weekday! For the people who have to work on Sunday, it has to suck a bit, but for the rest of us, what's the problem? I don't know, to me, that's far better than the alternative. Sure we gain an hour of sleep in the fall, but it's fucking dingy at 5 at night! And I never hear along with it...yeah but we get so much more light. It's always concern with the sleep. Come on, are we that sleep-deprived? Maybe there's something I'm missing, or maybe it's because I really really hate winter, but I'll take the loss in sleep if I get the warm weather and gain in light any day.
More Links
This isn't much of a post, just wanted to let everybody know I added a bunch more links to the links bar thingy, so enjoy...or tell me if any of them don't work. They should, but anything's possible.

Stupid Commercials
I had the radio on and I heard a commercial that stopped me in my tracks. It was a commercial for some charity called Operation Eyesight. Apparently this dude feels like he's making a difference because he's giving money every month to them and they help prevent eye diseases in developing countries, and if he gives so much a month, it'll pay for one eye operation to help someone see again.
Ok, the first part is cool. If they can get rid of nasty things that cause disease, that's cool. But I hope this guy knows that eye operations are far from having a perfect success rate. Ask a lot of blind people why they're blind, and they'll say it's due to a failed eye operation. And that's in developed countries. Imagine what this charity has to contend with in developing countries. I just hope this charity is honest, and tells him about all the ones that they operated on with the help of his money and the operation failed, along with all the ones they apparently healed.
And now I sound like an ungrateful bitch. I'm not saying I'm against the charity per se. I just don't like all the misinformation I see. This is sorta along the same line as Steve's post about The United Way. the commercial makes everybody think, oh give a little money and some problem will go away. The last line made me laugh. It said, "Am I making a difference? Well, ask 2-year-old Mahocknabock in Bangladesh. He can see again." I pictured it if the guy knew the real story. "Am I making a difference? Well, ask 2-year-old Mahocknabock in Bangladesh. They tried to fix his eyes, and now instead of seeing blobs, he sees nothing because his retina disintegrated when they tried to fix it."

God, the All-Knowing, All-Seeing, All-Powerful Bitch
Sorry for being gone for so long, I really don't have much of an excuse. For the first part of the week, I just had no inspiration. Then my computer died. Oh it's very dead and in the shop...I'm so happy I have my old computer still being pretty functional.
Anyway, I got thinking about this the other day, and all the "god loves you" ads just fueled it. I don't get the two main principles of religion. It just seems that if they were cars and you put them on the road and called it logic, they'd be headed for a head-on collision. But hey, I guess religion is full of those. I shouldn't be surprised. But here's my problem.
Principle a. God is all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful. Don't fuck with God. Notice that a good man is a god-fearing man? Why does he have to be god-fearing?
Principle b. Pray to god and ask him for things and he'll give them to you. Hand all your worries over to god and let him handle it.
Now, if you were an all-knowing all -powerful being, would you put up with 6 billion children going "I want I want I want gimme gimme gimme waa waa waa" all day? No Sirree Bob! You'd be telling them off, ignoring them, and just plain getting pissed off. Until you can prove to me there is a perfect being, there's no such thing. Hell if ya read the bible, sure God got mad and said, "fuck mercy, kill 'em all." I don't care what you say, that means he has flaws, faults, and the only reason people don't want to admit that is they would prefer, for the sake of their blind faith, to make up more excuses, and set more cars on a head-on collision course on Logic way.
Also, if he's all-powerful and you don't want to fuck with him, why does everyone seem to think he's their personal bitch? They're always telling him to bless people, praying to him to save people, asking him for help. I dunno, that sounds more like an errand boy to me than a god. No one would go to a king or the Prime Minister or the President and ask him for guidance in every little thing. Hell, you can't get near the President, and he's not even all-powerful! I won't speak to whether you can get tnear the Prime Minister, because people seem to be able to scale fenses and get into his bedroom and need to be fended off with eskimo carvings, so it seems you can get to him. But if you told your buddies, "Hey, I'm going to go see the Prime Minister and askhim for help on what to do about my marital problems,"your friends would probably think you were out of your mind and call the funny farm. So why is someone who's supposed to have umpteen million times the power of any human holder of power going to give our trivial problems any time? Hell in the words of religion he's making the rains come and turning the earth! Does he have time for us? Doubt it. It just makes no sense. Anyone else following this logic? Man, if there is a god, I'm so totally going to hell. Oh well, if he really wanted me to know he was there, he'd do something to prove it. "Oh no, God's not like that. If you don't ask him for help, he just goes away." Wait a minute wait a minute. What about all those people he got pissed at for doubting him? And why did he show himself so often in the old days? I'm sure people didn't just believe him straight off. Oo, look over on logic way. I see something. Two sets of headlights. *smash!* Oo that was a deadly head-on collision. Wonder if there were any survivers?

Things You'll Never Hear In A Western Movie
These made me laugh, and the site needs updating, so here they are.
~"I reckon I'll have me a half-caf double latte with a twist. IN A DIRTY MUG!"
~"Gentlemen, rather than get caught up in mindless reaction, let's draw upon our feminine selves for a more intuitive solution."
~"Can we postpone this duel till 12:05? I gotta use the little boys room."
~"Injuns! Quick, pull the wagons into an irregular dodecagon!"
~"Y'know, Badlands Pete... a roaring campfire, good coffee, nice prairie breeze, just you 'n' me... what say we put on the rhinestone gowns and dance a jig or two?"
~"Let's see... hardtack and pemmican... that's three grams of fat, seven grams of protein, and two starches."
~"You 'n' Slim round up them strays, and I'll tell Cookie to get started on the gazpacho and the fondue."
~"That's him! That's the yella-bellied varmint who shot my therapist!"
~"He was a strong man, a good marshal, and I reckon he had a keen eye for interior decoration."
~"Hey, Buck, do these chaps make my ass look big?"
~"It's like I keep tellin' ya, Earl: men is from Tombstone, women is from Dodge."
~"HANG HIM HIGH, BOYS!! ...Okay, now a little to the left... ...Oooh! Stop right there. Perfect!"

No Marley No Film
BBC asks long-dead Bob Marley for interview
LONDON (AFP) - A red-faced BBC apologised for requesting an interview with Bob Marley, the Jamaican reggae legend who died 24 years ago.
BBC Three, one of the public broadcaster's digital TV channels, sent an e-mail to the Bob Marley Foundation saying it wanted to do a documentary about his hit song "No Woman No Cry".
It said the project would involve Marley -- who died of cancer in May 1981 at the age of 36 -- "spending one or two days with us", and that "it would only work with some participation from Bob Marley himself".
In a statement, the BBC said: "We are obviously very embarrassed that we didn't realise that the letter to the Marley Foundation did not acknowledge that Mr Marley is no longer with us."
Marley would have been 60 last February 6, a date that was celebrated with great fanfare by his legion of fans worldwide.
A BBC press officer, contacted by AFP in London on Friday, confirmed that the gaffe was not an April Fool's joke.

This Is So Wrong
I wish that I'd known about this sooner. Perhaps if more of us had, this whole sad situation could have been avoided. What am I talking about you ask? Well, it turns out that for the last few months, Terri Schiavo has had her very own
blog,
and that as recently as March 27th, she was posting her thoughts and opinions on anything and everything for all of us to see. How could so many have missed this? It's so wrong and on behalf of all of us Terri, I'm sorry.

The Old Negro Space Program
this
is the best documentary I've ever seen. Up until now I had no idea that the Black NASA even existed. I guess the black blackout must have really happened. Why else would this have never been covered in history class?
The movie is a little long, but it's worth it.
