Hallowe'en Countdown. Last Edition
Well, it's an emotional day. It's the last installment for the Hallowe'en Countdown which really wasn't a countdown since there was no particular order. And I'll admit this is is a very anti-climactic end to the "countdown" as there have been more amusing edtions... but it's still good and it's still hard to be done with. Anyway here it is. Down the road we'll find some Christmas fun but for now, let's just deal with this.
---
can't tell you how it began, when it began, or why it began -- but it happened. "Ghoul-Aid," a series of Halloween beverage mixes from the fine folks running Kraft's Kool-Aid factory, sought to capitalize on the season we love so much with spooky flavors and devilish pictures of the Kool-Aid Man in vampire garb. To say this was the defining moment of mankind is a gross understatement; the reality is, every culture and every race in the entire universe can look to the debut of Ghoul-Aid as the benchmark by which all other events must be compared. In fewer words, I really, really like the stuff.
There were several varieties of Ghoul-Aid available, though "Scary Blackberry" seems to have been the only one to receive a wide release in the States. This, by default, makes a handful of other countries much better than ours. World leaders, take note. Wars are a thing of the past. Conflicts can be resolved and victorious nations can be named simply by determining who has the most available varieties of Ghoul-Aid. Bring our boys home; pour them a cup of liquid sugar high. Yeah. Flavor aside, the real coup was all in the packaging -- a Dracula version of the Kool-Aid Man is the kind of thing that shapes the dreams and doodles of any third-grader, or in this case, a really bored guy in his mid 20s. Rumors persist that Ghoul-Aid is a permanent addition -- something that's dusted off year after year during the Halloween season -- but I've had no luck finding it. That might put the cool drawing of the Ghoul-Aid Man on the shelf, but for those wondering what this "Scary Blackberry" crap tasted like, there's still hope.
If you've never seen the Kool-Aid F.A.Q., you don't know what you're missing. The immense document covers everything from how to make "Kool-Aid Toast" to at least 30 different tutorials on how to dye your hair with the shit, and when it comes to lost flavors, the F.A.Q. has you covered. I'm not sure when it was last updated (seems to have been running from at least 1998, if not earlier), but according to some guy named Michael Cooper, "Scary Blackberry" is but a single trip to the local grocer away.
In his words: "Just a note to let you all know I mixed up my own Scary Blackberry tonight, just a little different than the recipe given by Kraft. I actually mixed grape, cherry, and tropical punch and three cups of sugar together in a three quart pitcher and then diluted it accordingly into my storage pitchers. For the record, I can't say it tastes exactly like Scary Blackberry, because I've never had any. I will say that it tastes *exactly* like a mix of those three flavors, with the tropical punch flavor being most dominant. The color, however, is a great Halloween blood reddish-purple."
Well, if it's good enough for this Michael Cooper guy, it's good enough for me...
I had to substitute "Blastin' Berry Cherry" for "Cherry," but I found the right "Grape" and "Tropical Punch" flavors. Had to dig through a huge pile of Kool-Aid's "Mad Scientist" flavors that had magical changing colors and other weird crap, but if that's what I gotta do to get myself some Ghoul-Aid, I can take it. I was probably a little off with the flavor-to-flavor ratio, but after adding enough sugar to lure ants as far away as Guam, the end results seemed on the mark:
Well I'll be! Though technically not "Scary Blackberry," the mixture is indeed an intensely deep red and tastes pretty much exactly how a blackberry-flavored Kool-Aid should. Incredible stuff, actually. I'm not a big Kool-Aid aficionado, but I still drank six or seven cups in succession before finally succumbing to the sugar rush by running around the ceiling singing that song Frasier belts out in his ending credits. This was gooood drinkin'. Who knew the key to harmony lied in a glass of Scary Blackberry Ghoul-Aid? I mean, besides Michael Cooper?
Finally, a reason to obey your thirst. Fuck Sprite.
I'm not sure if they were available here, but at least in Canada, other varieties of Ghoul-Aid popped up. "Scary Black Cherry" and "Eerie Orange" can't match the charm of the original, but it's nice to have options if you wanted to drink Halloween Kool-Aid but had a peculiar distaste for anything blackberry-flavored. Unfortunately, instead of wearing the vampire suit, these follow-ups pictured the Kool-Aid Man with nothing more than a cheesy black wrap-around bandana -- a costume that would've seemed way more pitiful if the guy wasn't already a living pitcher full of fruit punch.
Anyway, I guess that's all. For those interested, I wasn't kidding about that makeshift mixture. It's really tasty. As for the "real" varieties of Ghoul-Aid, who knows? Maybe Kraft'll surprise us. Maybe they won't. Maybe they won't. Maybe they will. Maybe maybe they they won't will will won't. God, I drank too much Kool-Aid.

And with that, Hallowe'en is over forever! Well, for a year or so.

Famous People
Just read a couple things that I thought were worth mentioning. First, Vanilla Ice is 35 today. Happy birthday to him. I respect Vanilla Ice for a few reasons. For one thing, he hardly ever puts out music anymore and when he does, it doesn't show up on radio and haunt me everywhere I go. But when I think about it, I'd rather hear his stuff than some of the shit we're subjected to these days.
Another thing I like about him is that for a guy who's career has basicly been dead since 1992, he's amazing at making sure people don't forget him by coming back just enough to make us remember before going away again. We don't get any sort of Vanilla over-saturation like we get with other celebs. You can count on hearing about him every couple years or so pretty much like clockwork. There was that metal album he did, that boxing match he had for the celebrity boxing special, and I think he even did a song with The Bloodhound Gang at one point. He's made being washed up in public into an artform and for that he deserves something, although what that is I'm not really sure.
I also respect the fact that he's not a whore like Pam Anderson, or at least the fact that if he is, he's smart enough to keep his fool mouth shut about it. Just saw this on Rolling Stone and for some reason it pissed me off.
PAM BOUNCES BETWEEN TOMMY, KID ROCK
Just three days after KID ROCK publicly serenaded
on-again/off-again fiance PAMELA ANDERSON at a New York City bar,
she was seen holding hands and kissing ex-husband TOMMY LEE at the
Los Angeles premiere of "Scary Movie 3," according to the new issue
of "Us Weekly." "I see [Kid and Tommy] both," Anderson told the
magazine. "They're just great guys. I have the best of all worlds."
No, you're a whore! Well maybe not a whore, but a skank for sure. I think the thing that gets me so mad about this is that nobody's going to say word one about how slutty that is just because she is who she is. Let's be honest here, if your sister or the girl across the street from you busted out remarks like that she'd be the town tramp and we all know it. I'm sick of celebrities getting a free pass just because they made a movie or something. Give me a break!
Ok, I'm gonna go before I bust a blood vessel or something. Comment at will.

What's Your Life Rated?
Found this quiz while I was surfing around. I always thought this stuff was kind of neat so I'm sharing it cause well, I can, damnit! It's a test to figure out what your life would be rated on the MPAA movie ratings scale. Somehow I ended up with NC-17, that's X for people who aren't familiar with what that means.
If you do the test, leave your score in the comments section at the end of this post. It'll be interesting to see what kind of people we've got reading this site on a daily basis. You can rate your life

Hallowe'en Countdown: Crowning The Season's Champ... Sorta
Well, we haven't had this in a while so here's another installment of our Hallowe'en Countdown. Enjoy. I'll try and get some more reading of "interest" for y'all up here tomorrow.
---
We've seen lots of oddball candy selections for this Halloween season, but not everyone is skipping over the classics. Even at the top of Choco Mountain, three of the sales leaders have taken a bite out of the holiday spirit and filled the wound with all sorts of marshmallow slime and peanut butter creme. Hershey's, Reese's, and Snickers have all been given the Halloween treatment, and more striking than their similarities there is the fact that they've uniformly been souped up to look like pumpkins. No ghosts, no vampires, no witches or Frankensteins. Pumpkins, and lots of 'em. Their respected names will surely make these the season's top sellers and the most bragged about entries into any kid's trick-or-treat sack, but when all the chocolate is stripped and the bellies of our youth more bloated than a dead beached sea turtle, there can only be...one champion. Which of these three ace card contenders is the true leader of the pumpkin-shaped chocolate Halloween candy society? Let's find out.
First up, Hershey's "Marshmallow Pumpkin," a big chocolate shell containing an even bigger loaf of marshmallow gunk. Though it's the only one of the three magic pumpkins that isn't hideously unhealthy, it's also the most boring. The marshmallow filling is fine on the first bite, but subsequent bites will leave you craving the worse yet tastier types of fillings found in the next entries. There is such a thing as too much marshmallow, and this is edible proof. Worst of all, it's only shaped like a Jack O' Lantern in the vaguest of ways, looking as much like half a monkey's ass as it does a pumpkin. On the plus side, it's cheap eatin' and the royal purple foil wrapper might inspire you into grander themes for your future wedding parties. Truth be told, apologies to Hershey's -- this just ain't the candy I'd be willing to build my future around. Pass.
From flop to glob, here's Reese's "Peanut Butter Pumpkin," a takeoff on their classic peanut butter cups. If you like the cups, you'll love this -- it's the same thing, just with 80 times more filling. Again, the pumpkin shape is more subdued than it should be, but you'll be too busy eating way too much peanut butter creme to care. Besides, with this one, it's all about the free association. This is a Halloween peanut butter cup, right? For all intents? So, you'll bite into it, realize how much it tastes like the regular cups, and invariably be reminded of that old Reese's Peanut Butter Cups commercial, where Dracula confesses that "he likes to eat the peanut butter...first." Then you'll try to eat the pb-pumpkins just as Dracula, ultimately failing, but having an incredible amount of fun along the way. For 69 cents, all that shit's a bargain. Still, I don't think Reese's has successfully topped our last entry...
Presenting this year's champion, the "Snickers Pumpkin." If you're going to eat a candy bar, there's usually no better avenue than the almighty Snickers -- and every part of that enticing formula has been perfectly mimicked and modified into a pumpkin-shaped holiday concession. This time, the pumpkin actually looks right, with decisively pronounced triangular eyes, a gaping mouth, and a stem that makes you want to take a step back and thank the good lord for creating life intelligent enough to make something so wonderful. And there's caramel! And nuts and all that other stuff! Chocolate! You can talk up the marshmallows and peddle the peanut butter all you want -- anyone faithful to their objectivity can see that Snickers took the crown fair and square tonight.
Bow to your new champ. Then eat it

Oops
For some reason this didn't post the first time but maybe that was for the best since I screwed something up anyway. Here it is again, hopefully all fixed.
What's In A Name?
I just read that The Gator Corporation, the people behind some of the spyware we all love so much, has
decided to change it's name to Claria
to better reflect their business plan and marketing strategy
and to distance itself from the Gator name, a name that anybody who has ever been a victim of it's software or who knows what it does at all hates with a passion.
This is stupid on a number of levels. First, what in hell does Claria even mean? Is there a dictionary definition under the word Claria that means installing your software on other people's computers without their knowledge like a virus, making it next to impossible to remove, disguising it as something useful and then using that software to track people's internet surfing habbits, serv pop-up ads to them over sites that didn't authorize the displaying of those ads as well as gathering personally identifyable information on those same people? If there is then I take it all back, the name change makes perfect sense. However as it is, the only thing that the new name reflects is a company running scared from a bad reputation, one that is very richly deserved.
And that leads to the other problem I have. How stupid do these companies think we are? Do they honestly think that people are going to think that because it's not Gator serving the ads, but instead it's Claria installing itself on their computers that it's ok to allow it to happen without fighting back? Like that conversation is ever gonna happen.
"Hey Dave, help me fix this computer, I've got these ads all over it and I never used to have them, I think I got Gator on here somehow."
"No Bob, that's Claria, not Gator."
"Well ok then, guess I can leave it there. Gees, that was close."
The only thing that this re-branding has done is given us a new name to hate and the same old reasons to hate it. Trust me, people are going to catch on, and they'll be changing that name to something else in another 5 years. Might I suggest Viral Scum Corporation or how about Unwantedd Commercials Unlimited?
I'll leave you with this thought. Even if I call it human bi-product fertilization, I still shit on your lawn. The act is more important than the name you give it.

Hoe Or Hockey?
Well, with the wheel of sloth out of the way the boys over at the Edge 102 Morning Show needed to find something else to hook people on.... Well they've got a winner in my book.
They've started a new phone in contest called "Hoe or Hockey?". It's really a pretty simple contest. While you're on the line they play 3 sound clips for you to guess of whether the clips have been taken from a hockey broadcast or "dirty movie" (as they call it). Obviously it's usually very simple and easy to decide on but it's more for humour. They've had some great lines like Ryan Smyth in a post game interview spouting off gems like "I'm a Banger! Big time, Baby!" or Bob Cole during a game calling out "Tucker lays the heavy speer to Roenick and he doesn't look happy about it."
They've run a few other contests similar to this one that were a lot harder to pick out at times. The most difficult one was called "Hoe Renovations" where you had to pick out whether the clip was from a "dirty movie" or from a Home Renovation shows. Again, usually it was just humour but there were rare occasions where the clips were difficult but there were some priceless lines out of that one as well like "To prevent injury, make sure you get right in there before you start pounding away!" or "Things won't turn out the way you want if you spray the backside."
Pretty much childish humour. But hey, I need to laugh in the mornings.

Good Old Politics
Right now here in Canada one of the main stories making news involves a bunch of high ranking government officials taking trips on the dime of a wealthy business family named the Irvings. I know that the idea of politicians taking gifts from people and not wanting anybody to know about it is nothing new, but every time something like this happens or even looks like it has happened, our media and the opposing political parties feel the need to jump all over it. I'm not sure why they think that we, the public at large really give a good god damn but it never fails that whenever something is made public that looks even a little suspect, there they are. The media with their cameras microphones and production trucks and the opposition with their "we're standing up for the interests of the people" line of horseshit all trying to get a little slice of each and every non-story. Problem is that nobody cares! We expect our politicians to be shady, it's part of the system. It'd be great if they weren't but it's like that old saying goes, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, or something like that.
It almost seems like the news media and big government think we're all stupid and can't look out for ourselves and need to be told when something is bad. After all, we did put them there to look after our interests, right? But people can be pretty observant at times and we know when something stinks. Beyond that, most of us can tell the difference between a gift and a bribe and as long as the politicos can do the same, then please, for the love of all that's good and just in this world, keep it off my TV! I don't need to be told that the Prime Minister's personal janitor once took a fishing trip with an oil executive, I've got bigger things to concern myself with.
And if the opposition parties think that anybody is dumb enough to buy their concern over what the governing party's members are doing they've got another thing coming since pretty much every Canadian with a functioning brain knows that each and every one of the blowhards coming to our defence are no better than the people they're railing against when it comes down to it.
I figure let them have their trips and let the corporations pay for them, that way at least they're not doing it on our dime. And as long as that gift bribe line doesn't get crossed, I see no problem with taking things from people who offer them. And if they do cross that line, voters know where the door is and we'd be more than happy to direct those responsible through it. That's one of the beautiful things about this halfass democracy we live in, the ability to replace our current groupe of no-good criminals with a new group of no-good criminals.
I've got an idea that I think is really good and I think that those in power should seriously consider looking into it. Run the country. You've got provinces running deficits into the billions of dollars, the health care system is going to shit, our military has been reduced to 2 guys with a blow gun, and the list goes on and on. Why not fix it before you worry about who spent what time at who's fishing camp? After all, we did put you in power to look after our interests, right?

Sympathy For The Devil?
I just saw on the news that a bunch of record stores that I don't shop at due to retardedly high prices are protesting against a decision by The Rolling Stones to sell their new DVD boxed set through Best Buy and Future Shop exclusively and not include these other stores in the action. You might be asking yourself just how they've decided to protest. Well they're going to stick it to The Stones by costing themselves money. I know, I can see Mick Jagger's lips trembling from here. The stores in question, HMV, Sunrise and Music World are pulling everything Stones related off of their shelves as their way of making a statement that this is profoundly uncool. It's also profoundly unsmart for a few reasons.
First, they're not hurting the band. If you've been with this site since the very beginning or have skimmed the archives like the devoted fan that you are, you've seen me explain this already. But just to refresh your memory, record sales don't pay the bills on their own, most of the money artists make comes from touring around the world playing live shows. Last time I checked they didn't have any shows planned for the local mall. Not only that, but they're the Rolling goddamn Stones, I don't think they're going to be all that upset if Sticky Fingers takes a bit of a sales dip because of this, I think they've sold a few copies already. The whole pull the music off the shelves thing might work on somebody who hasn't been around for 700 years but I think the Stones aren't going to feel this very much in the old pocketbook.
This doesn't hurt the consumer either since now people like you and I can get a fair price for our Rolling Stones purchases. Sure you might have to go further to find the stuff if you don't have a store near you that isn't participating in this sham of a protest but by the time you figure in gas money to get there I think it'd still be cheaper than hitting the local HMV to pick up what you want. Have you seen the prices in there lately? Christ, I think I could rent my own music store in the mall beside HMV for less money than it would cost me to get every Stones album ever made.
As for who this decision does hurt, I'm counting the record labels and the stores themselves which is fine with me. No problem there, go Stones! The stores are saying that they're costing themselves at least 2 million dollars in sales by doing this. Now granted I don't have a business degree and I'm pretty shitty with math but isn't that, um, not good? There's just something about people bitching about lost potential sales revenue and fighting this by costing themselves even more sales that just makes the logical part of my head spin.
As for the record companies, I'm sure they'll find a way to blame this all on downloading. Honestly, somebody needs to get these people glass belly buttons so that they can look out and see what's going on in the real world sometimes.
I have a mission for all of you, at least the ones who live near any of the stores involved in this. I want you to either call email or go down there personally and ask for anything you can think of by the Rolling Stones and then watch the kid behind the counter try to explain why you can't have it in a way that doesn't sound stupid. Then when they've explained it to you I want you to ask why they're willingly costing themselves lots of money to complain about a little bit of lost revenue and then watch as they squirm and get a manager who won't be able to give you a good answer either. If you manage to get somebody to admit that head office is filled with idiots,
let me know.
Even if they won't say so publicly, you know they're thinking it and you've made somebody have to face their own private shame, which is always a good thing.

Everybody Knows That The World Is Full Of Stupid People
Since I spend so much of my time here lately talking about people and how dumb some of us are, I thought it was pretty cool when I found a whole website full of examples. Feel free to click on over to
The Stupid Page
and have a look. Some of it is quite funny. There's other stuff there that I haven't checked out yet so have a look at that too. Just thought the stupid page part was interesting.

Last Joe Shmoe Update
Well it's a sad day for me. It's the last Joe Shmoe Update. Gotta say that in the last little while that there hasn't been many shows that I considered "can't miss". At one point Raw was can't miss but lately I don't seem to mind so much. I can't think of anything that I've considered to be a can't miss since Game 7 Leafs/Flyers back in the spring. Joe Shmoe though was can't miss tv for me. It was something new that we had never seen before and I couldn't help but be drawn toit. Enough with the sappy shit though, let's see what happened.
After hyping all week for us not to miss the first 15 minutes I took special care to be there FIVE MINUTES EARLY! What do I find? I find that the first TWENTY-THREE minutes are all recap of the big events of the entire season. Normally that would not bother me at all as it was pretty much to be expected but don't plug the show like we'll miss the climax if we miss the first 15. Anywho...
The former house guests all vote and it turns out that the final vote comes down to Dr Pat and she votes for The Hutch making him the winner. They do the big celebratory scene with music and stuff until the host gets a phone call that says there is a major problem and they go to commercial. They say that someone is not who they say that they are. Hutch admits that he indeed is not The Hutch. He is an actor but then accuses of Kip of being an actor too which he admits. Eventually they all come out and admit to being actors as a look of combined horror and confusion goes across Matt's face. He begins to almost laugh in stunned disbelief but then turns to Bryan, his 'best friend". this was the only part of the show where he actually looked like he could really flip out and poeple seemed nervous. He was literally yelling at Bryan to tell him if he too was an actor or not after the two having gotten so close. Bryan finally admits it and Matt strings out a string of profanities.
The host explains everything to him and you can actually see him trying to take it all in that EVERYTHING he's gone through wasn't real. He has a million questions and all the actors start introducing themselves to him. Matt gets the line of the night when he looks at Kip and says "Dude, tell me your at least gay!" which of course was not true. But Matt loves him anyway, that's great.
They give Matt the hundred thousand and all the other prises that the "house guests" acquired throughout the show for his trouble! That's nice of them. They keep telling him that they've done it all for him when really they've fucked with him for money and ratings. But he buys it so its cool.
This wouldn't have worked so well with anyone else. Matt was just that kind of trusting guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. it could have turned out real ugly with anyone else finding out that they've been fucking with him for so long but he laughs at off and boy does he stilll want a piece of Molly.
they follow this up with a one hour interview with Matt done a while after the show to get his prospective on everything. It's an interesting watch but I won't explain it all here. They show him all kinds of different things from the show and ask him what was going through his head at the time. it's really interesting and I'm sure it will be shown a million times on Spike TV in the next little while. Check it out.
Now I have to find something else to become infatuated with. Any ideas?
One last note. there are some new links up over on the right side. Check them out. There's some good stuff.
Later, y'all.

Sharin The Love
Just wanted to quickly mention a couple of people, and it's even in a positive way this time!
First, our friend
Armagideon Time
seems to have his own blog thing going on. It's fresh, it's new, it's Nintendo, check it out!
Another guy who needs some thanking is
Roland G.
Thanks for the link in the column man, and thanks much for the link on the blog too. You didn't have to do that, and it's very much appreciated. Your links are coming, just as soon as the posting system will allow.
And thanks also to everybody who's been visiting this site, linking to it, telling people about it and even stumbling on it by accident and never coming back, but I'm sure that never happens. We did our highest day ever yesterday, yea for us! I'm glad people are enjoying the site, it makes dealing with some of the goofy comment stuff and having to work alongside that backstabbing arsehole Matt seem worth it. Yeah Matt, that's right, you and me, an infight at the playground after school! You'd better show up this time, sissy! Man that joke never gets old. It's almost as fun as passing off other people's work as your own.

You Win!
One thing that's always gotten on my nerves is the practise of giving things to celebrities for doing their job. Anybody who has ever watched or listened to any sort of sporting event or seen Mike Bullard on TV more than once should know what I'm talking about. Things like, "for being our guest on the post-game show, Frank will receive a combination can opener and alarm clock courtesy of WalMart."
First of all, why can't Frank buy his own combination can opener and alarm clock at his own local WalMart, I'm sure he's got the money. And secondly, he doesn't need one, and not just because can opening time pieces are a stupid idea either. Fact is that Frank probably has about 372 of the damn things kicking around his house from all his other guest spots on all the other post-game shows in every other city in the known world. I think it would make Frank much happier if WalMart just gave him 30 bucks so he could go out for a beer and a cheap lap dance at the club later on instead of yet another self-propelled personal video organizer.
I'm convinced that that's why famous people live in such big houses. It's not because they're self-absorbed egomaniacs who need everything to be a status symbol that will prove their own worth to humanity, it's because they need a place to put all the solar-powered night goggles and digital forks that people keep giving them. Seriously, cut that shit out.

Siegfried And Lunch
I swear to all of you that I'm not making this up. I saw it on a newswire so until I hear otherwise this is absolutely true. Where do they find these people? This was just one of the stories that we covered on the
radio
today, and we had a good laugh about it, for obvious reasons. Well maybe they're not so obvious to Roy Horn but that doesn't mean that we can't have a little fun at his expense. This makes me laugh every time I read it and again, I didn't write this, it was reported as actual news on an actual news site so if it's not true then it's not my fault.
LAS VEGAS (Wireless Flash) -- The white tiger who attacked animal illusionist Roy Horn has a message for him and Siegfried: "I need more time off."
That's what Montecore, the 600-pound white tiger reportedly told animal psychic Charlene Boyd when she telepathically visited him in his cage.
Boyd says Montecore attacked Roy because he was tired, "felt more was expected than he could handle" and because "he needed more down time."
Even worse: Montecore feels little remorse for his actions even though he told Boyd he probably mauled the wrong trainer. In Boyd's words, "He thought Roy
is `okay' but didn't care for Siegfried."
The chances of Montecore going back on stage again are slim, but Boyd says the tiger wouldn't mind as long as "there's more emphasis on tiger education."
Gees, where to begin with that. There's nothing I could say here to make that any funnier. Guess I'll just go and look for other topics or something and let you guys ponder the concept of an animal psychic. Man, that's right up there with pet therapist on the usefulness scale.

Watch A Game, Man. (More on Roberts and Kovalchuk)
This was posted in response to my comments on Roberts and Kovalchuk. I believe it deserves to be here... you'll see why in a moment.
Puck Talk
Gary Roberts vs. Kovalchuk....good comparison, but something's wrong that I disagree with.
I'll Roberts his due any day of the week, considering he's a member of God's Team In The National Hockey League. But Kovalchuk, from analysis from Pierre McGuire as well as Howard Berger of The FAN 6+0 both agree that Kovalchuk is a young Brett Hull.
I disagree Matt with your bashing of the young Atlanta Russian player who's only 23, he's got a long way to go to be even better. He can score, has a great shot and can one-time it like Hull and the other greats. Calling him GARBAGE is a little much. Ilya just stepped up his game because Dany Heatley is gone as well as this team is on an emotional high because of the unfortunete circumstances.
As far as Roberts is concerned, he's 38 and we as Leaf fans, as well as hockey fans all know that he can't play that style of crash-bang hockey every game. I think you've been hanging around Don Cherry a bit much.
Nick
And I think you're an idiot.
Now, I have several things to say about this and it's only up here because I didn't want to make all you good people scroll down to the comment board to read it... Let's begin, shall we.
There are two ways to address this. One is on a strictly hockey sense, the other is on an intelligence level. Just for shits and giggles, we're gonna hit both. Hockey first.
Gary Roberts at 38 years old is twice the hockey player that Kovalchuk is RIGHT NOW. What I wrote earlier never questioned that Kovalchuk was a good player, because he is. I commented on his attitude. Pay attention, junior. Gary Roberts still goes out and crashes and bangs and goes hard to the net hard. Kovalchuk can shoot like a mad man and is faster than hell. But all the positives you said (great shot, one-time from anywhere and can score) leave out big parts of the game. Like, maybe passing or helping out on defense. The guy's a floater. I could have 10 goals in the NHL right now too if I got to stand at cneter ice while my team mates fed me the puck and did all the work. I've yet to see him throw a hit or do an ounce of work along the boards. Roberts is a leader on and off the ice who 2 years ago single handedly carried his injury depleated team through the playoffs. Kovalchuk, well he has yet to get his team in to the playoffs even with Heatley's help. it's hard to compare because of talent levels on the two teams and the 2's age differences, but it's fact nonetheless. Let's move on to the intelligence part of this arguement as thats where I'm most fumed after reading your post.
To be honest, that was idiotic. The Atlanta Thrashers are NOT on an emotional HIGH. A team mate died, fool. It's an emotional time. You get an emotional high when you win the cup or score your 50th goal. Think about it. Second, you accuse me of spending too much time with Don Cherri. YOU LINKED TO TWO HOCKEY WRITERS. You don't disagree with me, you agree with what you're told on TSN. I don't give 2 shits about Pierre McGuire. He's entitled to his opinion and I am, mine. I don't phone Pierre after his segments and tell him HE'S WRONG. Also, when I wrote my post. Did I ever try to say that Kovalchuk wasn't a good player? In that post I simply said I hated him and Roberts was one of my faves. Reading your response makes me wonder if you even read my article cuz you didn't touch on anything I said other than the word garbage which I stand by. He IS garbage. AS A PERSON. The points I brought up were about pumping a fist after an empty net or embarassing a young French team in international competition while representing your country. For my money. The two best players in the league right now are Todd Bertuzzi and Peter Forsberg. THEY DO IT ALL. Hit, defend, pass, score, stand up for team mates. I haven't seen Kovalchuk jump in to a scrum yet to stand up for someone unless the guy had his back turned. You're telling me my opinions aren't mine, they're Cherry's. All I have to say to that in closing is this, and a few of you only will understand this. Man, you can quit questioning my OPINIONS and go back to posting Bob McKenzie's Insider Reports into e-mails and sending them to everyone with your name on them claiming to be an Insider. Who's ideas are those? With that.
I'M DONE!

With that.
I'M DONE!
Hallowe'en Countdown! "Trick Or Treat" BUBBLE TAPE!
Back with some more Hallowe'en fun. This time we take a look at Trick Or Treat Bubble Tape. How could it not be cool.
Don't forget to check out all the other cool stuff on X-E. The place is loaded with all kinds neat stuff. But for now, let's look at Hallowe'en Bubble Tape.
---I'm going to assume that everyone reading has tried "Bubble Tape" at some point in their life -- if you haven't, you're insane. It's six feet worth of bubble gum, all wrapped neatly into a little dispenser for one low cost. Six feet! If I'm remembering things correctly, Bubble Tape was first unleashed on the world when I was in the fifth grade -- long time ago, so it's a long-standing commodity in the candy market. When this stuff first came out, though, kids were absolutely wild for it. It wasn't "just" gum, it was this huge experience and any of us who had a pack instantly climbed that unspoken social ladder by at least three steps. There was a huge ad campaign that tried to pit any child who ate Bubble Tape as a disobedient rebel and generally cool guy, so of course, that's the gum we wanted the most. Over the years, there's been oodles of new flavors, but it doesn't seem to pack quite the star quality it did during my youth. There's been spans of months where I won't see it on sale anywhere, but fortunately, it'll always pop up again, sometimes with a weird gimmick. A weird gimmick like this: Bubble Tape's "Trick or Treat" black raspberry gum. Yep, you can say "holy shit" now. Even Bubble Tape has a Halloween edition.
It's interesting, to say the least. As bubble gum in general just becomes more tastebud-assaulting in the sour and tart department, black raspberry seemed like a natural choice. Indeed, the inside of your mouth with go batshit nutso upon receipt of the gum. The "bubble" part isn't quite literal, as it's not really chewy enough to make anything but a few token bubs that last two seconds before staining your lips with deep purple gumjuice. They should market that as a selling point. Kids love looking filthy. I don't, but the stains remain nonetheless. I just had a piece now, and my tongue looks like a half-defrosted steak. I wonder if eating "Trick of Treat" Bubble Tape can help me nail a halfassed-but-passable Halloween costume.
"Hi partygoers. I'm the guy with the bruised tongue. I hear there's punch!!"
I'm perfectly fine with Halloween Bubble Tape -- actually, the thought of it tickles me. There's just one thing I gotta know, and it's something that's bothered me for the better part of my life.
Is there really six feet of gum in there?
Nope, there isn't. They're more than a full foot short with that claim. I even allowed for a reasonable margin of error, as the end of the roll was pretty brittle and impossible to lay out in a straight line without breakage. BUBBLE TAPE HAS BEEN LYING TO US, FOLKS. There's only 4'11" worth of gum in those packages. We've been gypped!
Though, you know, 4'11" worth of bubble gum is nothing to cry about. I just so wished that the wad of unchewed glory would actually be taller than I am. If only I was an Oompaloompa. With a bruised tongue. With lots and lots of money. Think I'll go chew my sorrows away. Bye. :(

Enemies, Mr Shmoe, A Russian Retard & MORE!!
It seems that my newest enemy, Steve, and my oldest enemy, let's call her... EVIL HUMANIZED have united lately in a movement to shatter my ego. Well, let me say this! The two of you have much work ahead of you to smash THIS ego. I'm not sure at what point Steve and I actually BECAME enemies. It seems that decision was made for us but rest assured friend. You're in for a war. I now consider you to be on the same level as things like Oprah, Big Show work-rate, our friend Chris, pineapple juice and other things that plague my life. You join elite company.
Just thought I'd pass on yet another reminder of tonight's Joe Shmoe Show finale on Spike TV. You'd better be watching or .... uhh... hmmm. This threatening stuff is hard. Moving on.
As I said late last night. I went to see the Leafs/Thrashers game. Was actually a good game but it provided a unique experience. I was able to see the player who is right now probably my favourite in the league and the player that is BY FAR the guy I hate most in the league.
Yup. Gary Roberts vs Ilya Kovalchuk. I'm sure most of you can guess which is which but for those of you who suffer from an exceptionally intense case of IDIOCY I'll specify. Roberts Good. Kovalchuk Not As Good. Roberts is a complete hockey player through and through. He hits, passes, scores, makes good plays along the boards, goes in to the corners and will stand up for his team mates if he has to. Now let me make this very, very clear for all of you. Kovalchuk is GARBAGE! Yup, pure Russian trash. (before I move on I'll say I don't believe all Russians are trash, I simply used Russian as an adjective, there's Canadian trash out there too! believe me, saw most of it last night at ACC)
The guy's a goddamn hot dog. At the World Junior's two years ago his Russian team was up 8-0 on a young French time who was just there for experience. Kovalchuk scores a goal to make it 9-0 and dances and celebrates tauntingly like he has just scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. A few nights ago he scored on an empty net to insure a win for his team and instead of having some dignity and respect for the other team, he drops to one knee and slides along the ice pumping his fst. What the HELL is that? It's an empty net you retard and the game was already over. Now you're just trying to embarass the other team. I can't wait until someone like Todd Bertuzzi or Rob Blake absolutely staples that guy to the boards after pulling some shit like that on their home rink. Stuff like that pisses me.
Well that's it for now. I'll be back later with some more Hallowe'en Countdown and we'll see what else. Don't forget to tune in to Steve's radio show today!! The link's over there on the right.
What? Oh I guess I promised "MORE!!!" up there in the title, didn't i? Wel tough! I'm tired you greedy pricks. I need some me time.

A Good Night, A Bad Night, Some Dumb Shit So Let's All Fight
Well I just got back from the Leaf game, and what do I see? Idiocy on the boards! Had a great time at the Leaf game but having to come back to this sours me quite quickly.
But.. I don't have much to say on it. Steve handled pretty much everything that needed to be said, and did it quite well. No need for me to repeat him or step on what he's said. That may cause INFIGHTING!!!
I'll say this though. Would be wise for our friend to keep in mind what I told him about the ability to block people from the message board. It's 2 clicks away. I'll leave at that and just say good work to my partner, Jim.
As I said, I spent tonight in T.O. at the Air Canada Center watching the Leafs and Thrashers. Was a great game despite the Leafs losing in overtime. Although, by all right the Leafs should have been out of it long before then but as usual, Uncle Eddie kept them in it. And the O.T. goal was beautiful with Savard goin' roof-daddy on Belfour. He really didn't have a chance.
Enough of that. I was overwhelmed of the pool of human ignorance that is downtown Toronto. Everyone feeling that they need to be the first ones to their seats. Something wrong when my 10 year old cousin gets cut off and run in to by two 40 year old steaming piles of... well you get it. And ya if either of you two are reading. You shouldn't have been surprised that I didn't walk around when you stopped right in front of me after hittin' my cousin. Kinda sucks to get absolutely crushed by someone bigger than you, doesn't it? You better be careful. The next 10 year old you cut off may just kick your ass! 10 year olds these days are total bad-asses.
Thanks to Steve's friend for the fun Hallowe'en stuff. You're all more than welcome to contribute with things like that. It shakes things up a bit.
Jim, prepare for BEHIND THE SCENES BATTLES! Inside jokes are mine and mine alone! And I think we need to find this source he's using. We have a mole amongst us. We'll find him, Jim. We'll find him.

The Frozen Hand Of Death
Taking a break from the unpleasantness that is the last post I thought I'd share this with you all. Got an email from a friend who I promised a bit of space to and she came through with something kind of cool considering the Halloween thing that we've got happening here. I'm also getting in my 1 and hopefully only inside joke. If Matt can do it, then damnit, so can I! And if he has a problem with that, he can feel free to start some behind the scenes infighting with me. So without further delay, take it away, Hailley!
**so here is one thing I wanted to pass along goes with that popcorn hand
grins.
Delicious! As it is with any Halloween punch, a frozen 'hand' adds just the
right spooky touch! The combined colors make a delightfully scary look!
Makes 1 gallon (32 servings).
Black Halloween Punch
1 (.13 ounce) envelope unsweetened grape soft drink mix
1 (.13 ounce) envelope unsweetened orange soft drink mix
2 cups white sugar
3 quarts cold water
1 liter ginger ale
Directions
1. To make a frozen hand, wash a disposable glove, fill with water, seal
with a rubber band and freeze until hard.
2. Stir together grape soft drink mix, orange soft drink mix, sugar and
water until solids are dissolved. Combine with chilled ginger ale just
before serving. Dip the frozen hand briefly in warm water, then peel off
the glove.
Float the prepared hand in the punch bowl for a ghastly effect.
This is a real actual recipe but the hand part sounds real cool.
Now the other lil' ditty I wanted to post was...and remember you said you
would put up there whatever I wanted,ok? So..this is what I want to
ask...Steve, is it still a toaster? ehehehehe
Hailley
Ok, back to me again. Matt, or anybody else, let me know if that worked, I tried to put the email in red and me in the plain old regular colour that we always use, just to make things easier for the sighties and to prove that I'm just that cool.
Anyway to answer 1 question, yes, it is indeed a toaster and it will be so to it's dying day. Even the lone person who refuses to believe this cold hard fact has cracked on a few ocasions and refered to it by it's true name. In any case, I don't have to deal with it anymore as it is now gone away from here and taken up residence in another, more anti-toaster household. It has been replaced by a new toaster which is proud of it's toaster heritage.
Thanks for the cool recipe by the way. I can't even imagine pulling that shit on my drunk friends, would freak the shit out of them for sure. Well not the ones who read this site since they'll already know but not everybody reads this so cool idea.
More from me later.

Common Sense, People!
I hate having to clutter up the site by ragging people out about things they should already know but like I said in an earlier post, stupidity is slowly but surely overrunning the world. I saw something on one of the message boards that needs addressing so I'm going to do so here. I'm not going to single out the person who did it because well, you should know who you are and aside from that, if I were to do that then I'd be breaking the rule that I'm about to make public. It's a rule that I should by no means have to make but hey, it all goes back to what I just said.
There are actually 2 things I need to get to here.
1. There is no infighting between Matt and I. If there is, I don't know anything about it. One of the people posting things along those lines understands this and is taking it how it is meant to be taken, as fun. The other guy who has posted on this topic doesn't seem to understand that, or much else for that matter. Dude, get a clue. You're trying to use our message board to make up something that is really a non-story and doing it in the style of a 5th rate wrestling news reporter. What the hell is wrong with you? I'm not sure what "sources" you have or where you're getting all this stuff about internal politicking, or politicing as you spelled it, but you're acting like a blithering idiot so please stop. I'm saying this for your own good because the 400 or so people who have visited this site to date don't need to see you outed as a retard in a public setting like this, and I'm damn sure that you don't need that either. So please, for your own good, kindly cut the crap.
2. This should be a no-brainer, but we've obviously got a few no-brainers in the crowd here so it needs mentioning. I'm only bringing this up because of the same guy from point number 1. Guy, this is the second time you've done this and I think Matt has already mentioned this to you privately. When using the comment board and responding to people's posts, please address that person using the name they put on their posts, not any other name that you might happen to know them by and this includes their real name. People use nicknames on the net for a reason, dipshit. It's because they don't want to be identified or because they only want to be identified as whatever they're calling themselves. Please respect this and don't use anything but what is printed. For example, if you see a post from me you would write something along the lines of, "Steve, I agree with you," or "Steve, you're a stupid sack of shit." You would not write, "you know, Jim Rectumsnatch, you're right on the money with that one." And just for the benefit of anybody else out there who might be as stupid as our friend here, no, my name is not Jim Rectumsnatch, although that is a mighty fine name if I do say so myself.
So in conclusion, it's not rocket science here, we can all get along. There are just a few people out there who need their place in the equation here drilled repeatedly into their heads.
Any feedback can be left in the comments area or sent directly via email to
Jim Rectumsnatch, Co-blogmaster.
You can also
ask Matt,
and I'm sure he'll back me up on everything I've written.
Feel free to use the comments and email links, that's what they're for. Just be smart and be cool about it, please.

Cleanin Out The Old Inbox
Wow, I actually went a day without posting anything. Yesterday was the first time since the site went live that I missed one. Not that it matters though since Matt seems to have things well in hand, filling up the weekend quite nicely. Maybe it matters to those of you who don't like Matt and just come here to read my stuff but let's be serious here, I don't think that happens too much, if at all. If it does, then I hope all my fans will show Matt some love in the future.
I didn't see the last game of the World Series and I pretty much missed the Leaf game completely so I'm not going to talk about them. I am however going to give mad props to my friend Tim's Dad's homemade wine. Christ but did that stuff mess me up good. What I'm getting at here is that I've pretty much been out of the loop on news sports and other things since Saturday afternoon and I'm just now getting caught up after spending the morning cleaning my place up so it looks like people should live in it again. As much as cleaning sucks, it's always cool to know that you're having to clean because you had fun. That makes it a little easier to take while you're on your knees scrubbing spilled drinks off the floor.
Why is it that whenever you decide to step away from the things that you normally do and have some fun or do something unexpected that all your friends decide that they need to get ahold of you at the same time? I swear they must have a meeting or something or that there must be psychic powers involved somewhere. I'm so behind on reading email right now it's not even funny. Hey, I just got more. So if you've written me and haven't heard back one of 2 things is happening. Either A, I don't like you and wish you'd leave me alone or B, your reply is coming I just have to dig your message out of the pile. Speaking of the pile, if you'd like to contribute to it in an interesting way, you can do so
here.
Man, this is a really random post and something tells me that that isn't going to be changing but don't worry, there's jokes in here so stick with it.
I'm glad to see that somebody else is as upset as I am about Fred Durst and his Who cover. This was posted on the comment boards, which all of you can feel free to use by the way.
"AAARGH
I didn't know until now that Limp Bizkit had covered The Who. Is nothing sacred anymore???? It makes me retch that durst is using this song to try and prove
that he can sing. they've now sunken even lower in my esteem. I LOVE THE WHO"

Sorry to ruin your day like that, Karine. And by the way, if any of you are finished reading everything here and want something else to look at, why not try
Karine's blog?
All I ask is that you come back here when you're done and see if we've posted anything new. Odds are that either we have or we haven't, do with that info what you will. Thanks again to all of the people who've been checking out the site so far, we're doing some ok numbers here, at least I think they're ok.
Ok, now for those jokes I promised you. People like to send me jokes, so I'm going to go through my mail and pick out some of the better ones and share them with you all.
Q: Why is it so difficult to solve a redneck murder?
A: The DNA is all the same..

A man came home from work one day to find his wife sitting on the
front porch with her bags packed.
He asked her where she was going and she replied,
"I'm going to Las Vegas."
He asked her why she was going to Vegas and she told him,
"I just found out that as a woman I can make $400 a night doing
what I give you for free."
So the man went into the house, packed his bags and returned to
the porch.
"And just where do you think you are going?" His wife asked.
"I'm going to Vegas too!" he replied.
"Why?" she asked.
"I want to see how you are going to live on $800 a year!"

It was the mailman's last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the
first house on his route he was greeted by the whole family there, who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a big gift envelope. At the second
house they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures.
At the fourth house he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the
door (which she closed behind him), and led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced.
When he had had enough they went downstairs, where she fixed him a giant breakfast: eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh-squeezed
orange juice. When he was truly satisfied she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under
the cup's bottom edge.
"All this was just too wonderful for words," he said, "but what's the dollar for?" "Well," she said, "last night, I told my husband that today would be
your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you." He said, "Fuck him, give him a dollar." The lady then said,
"The breakfast was my idea."

Q: What's the difference between a man who stutters and a homosexual?
A: One has a wreck in his dictum...

Ok, last one for now. A friend of mine sent it to me and kind of asked me to post it, probably to make me look like a tool. Oh well, I'm not above making myself look like an ass so here goes. It's funny, in that stupid sort of way and besides, it's a costume joke, so it fits the theme.
A man turns up at a fancy costume party with a condom on his nose, to which everyone asks, "what on earth have you come as?"
The man replies, "Fuck knows!"

Ok person who sent me that, I hope you're reading this and saw that I actually did post it. And for anybody who didn't get it, try reading it out loud, maybe that'll help.
If you've got a joke of your own that you think I might like, leave it in the comments spot at the end of this post. If I see anything good that I think should be up here on the main site, that's where it'll go.
I'll be back later on hopefully with something a little more focused. For now, it's time to catch up on the mail.
Steve

Hallowe'en Countdown. Those Cool Spider Ring Things
And now another installment of our fun little Halloween Countdown from over on X-E. Today we look at those cool spider rings. What would Hallowe'en be without Spider Rings? A Crappy Hallowe'en, that's what! Enjoy!
---Our collective fascination with those damned plastic "spider rings" is something I find difficult to explain, but for the sake of avoiding a single-sentence countdown entry, I'm going to give it a shot. I think the big point of interest with these things lies in the fact that they're a Halloween constant -- not just a staple. For as long as I can remember, and that's pretty long, these rings have looked perfectly the same, and have always arrived at a price of five cents each. There are no surprises with spider rings: you know what you're getting, and unless there's a rapid shift in the universal balance, the schematics will remain the same until the day you die. In truth, they're nothing special and they never were, but sometimes, simplicity is divine. Spider rings are simple, and they're certainly divine. And they make your fingers look like they're crawwwwlin' with bugs!
Aside from their usual base of operations -- party stores -- I've seen the things countless times at Jersey shore video arcades. Amidst the 700,000-point video game systems and equally unattainable but less interesting Hummel statues, the spider rings remained a quick five-point bounty for any kid who just didn't understand the nuances of "Pop-A-Ball" or video poker. Nevertheless, the toys are tuned for Halloween, and if you've went through this past month without tacking one of these beasts over your ring finger, you're missing out on the bestest best way to capture the holiday spirit.
The rings most typically arrive in the classic Halloween colors, though much more frequently in black. The orange ones are neat and seasonal, but come on...orange spiders? Course, they're sized more for kiddy fingers than adults, but the band is easily chewed apart to allow entry for chubbier digits. Better yet, chew off the band part entirely, and you've got some pretty decent fake spiders to prank your friends with. When placed on the floor, a quick glance paints them as the real thing, and if there's anything more fun than tricking someone into thinking they've got a big spider crawling on 'em, I've never experienced it.
Though sold by the piece for a nickel, you can buy these little guys by the gross for dirt cheap -- there's little chance that you'll find a use for 144 plastic spider rings, but trying to sounds like it'd be a fun project. "#37: Eyebrow scratcher... #123: Something to throw at TV during unwanted reruns of Frasier..." They're not the grandest of the gamut of Halloween toys, but they're one of the classics.
That's right. Spider rings are a classic.

Joe Schmoe Show Update
Well, we're only TWO DAYS AWAY from the finale of the Joe Schmoe Show. So, yesterday Spike TV ran the entire Joe Schmoe Series leading up to this point in it's entirety in a Joe Schmoe Marathon. It was 8 hours long and I AM DAMN PROUD to say that I saw 6 hours and 43 minutes of it, y'know, just to refresh my memory before the big show.
The final episode does a great job to set up the final. The evicted house mates ahve returned and have all made their votes. The 3 left in the house are The Hutch, Bryan, and Matt. (our poor Joe) The winner will be announced right off the top of the show on Tuesday with the rest of the show being devoted to Matt's reaction to finding out he's been had by these people in front of THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.
It's hard to say how Matt will re-act. He's not overly bright but he's such a good guy. He'll either laugh this off or go on a murderous rampage. That's not meant to be a joke.
Something like this could really screw with someone's head. When he looks back at all he went through and finds out it's all been fake, he could really flip. We had how emotional he got during Earl's eviction, his constant standing up for Kip, and his resulting battles with Hutch, the fact that he thinks he's become such good friends with Bryan who is really just an actor. There are a lot of wild cards here that make the finale extremely unpredictable. He's gone through a lot during his time in the house and it was all fake. How would you take it? I'd probably be on the murderous rampage side of things. However, I have a feeling Matt's gonna laugh this off... eventually. I think it's gonna take a long time for it to sink in that EVERYTHING was fake. Not just the people, but all the contests, all the food, all the evictions, EVERYTHING.
Or.... Have WE been had? Is Matt an actor too? It's the consipiracy theory in me. But hey, it's possible.
I know I'll be watching. Something like this doesn't come around everyday, and I for one won't be missing it.
I'm Out.

Love It
On Saturday night I was lucky enough to see something incredibly enjoyable. Yup. The Florida Marlins spanking the hugely favoured New York Yankees right there in the middle of New York City for the world to see!
How can you not love that? The high priced, much favoured, all-star line-up of the New York Yankees getting disposed of by, of all teams, the Florida Marlins right at Yankee Stadium. It was a pleasure to see.
At the beginning of the year I guarantee you that not one of you would have put a red cent on the Florida Marlins to even make the playoffs, let alone be World Series Champions. But they carried on their way quietly becoming one of the best teams in baseball while at the same time being one of the youngest.
The Marlins sent a 23 year old pitcher to the mound in a game where they could potentially win the World Series to face the powerful New York Yankee offense. How could not cheer for Beckett and the Marlins? The kid pitched one of the greatest games in World Series History. When I saw him pick up the ball and tag Posada to end the game it was a great feeling to watch his reaction. His manager had faith in his 23 year old ace to go out and pitch a complete game, and that's what he did.
Just one final note. The Florida Marlins became the first visiting team to win the World Series at Yankee Stadium since 1981. Considering how many times the Yankees have gotten to that World Series, that really says something about the heart this team put in to it.

Hallowe'en Countdown. Freaky Froot Loops!
Here's Another neat little Hallowe'en Treat for y'all.
-----
The cereal aisles have been positively assaulted by the Halloween spirit, with virtually every brand except for those fibrous ones meant to help old people shit getting the spooky treatment. While Count Chocula and pals lead the pack, some of the more iconic bad boys of the breakfast table are donning fake fangs in a massive effort to cash in on the horror fest -- not even your fabled Froot Loops are safe.
Yep, it's Kellogg's Freaky Froot Loops, the sweetened multigrain cereal that lets you follow Toucan Sam's nose straight to Hell. The bird's even dolled himself up with a vampire cowl, while keeping his trademark smile just to let the kiddies know that, despite the outfit, he hasn't transformed into a hideous murdering monster. You know, from what I've heard, that's pretty debatable. The box marks the cereal as being a "limited edition" offering, in case there's a few collectible dealers out there who see a potential future selling off old boxes of Halloween Froot Loops. I don't, but it's still nice to know that I'm buying food that will simply cease to exist come November of this year. Though, if Freaky Froot Loops returns in 2004, the edition really wouldn't have been all that "limited." I'm not saying that Toucan Sam is a liar, but there's room for doubt.
Wow, that's the first time I've doubted a toucan like...ever. Halloween is so full of surprises.
To make the cereal more seasonal, some of those more SHOCKING and NEON colors have been excluded -- there's no blue or red loops in Freaky Froot Loops, and while that's reason to cry, the bird compensates with the addition of fa-reeeeky marshmallows! Yep, you get marshmallow bones, ghosts, and masks! The bones look more like broken off pieces of other marshmallows, the ghosts look like sperm, and they call the masks "masks" so they won't have to scare children by naming what's obviously meant to be "skull" marshmallows. All of 'em arrive in a base color of white with orange swirls abounding, and you can almost hear Dracula golf clapping off in the distance with horrific approval.
In any case, it still tastes as fantastic as ever, and the Froot Loops haven't lost their trademark of smelling exactly like those moist towelettes Chinese restaurants hand you when you're finished fondling all of those dead pig bones. Say what you will about these companies doing all this Halloween stuff just to spark sales, but it's still nice to see. In a world where holiday television specials are increasingly tossed aside from their usual prime time spots, and where my very own neighborhood seems to have lost its trick-or-treater count over the years by 90%, it's great to see someone, even Toucan Sam, get into the spirit of things. He's no Boo Berry, but hey, he's predominately blue just the same.
The back of the box features all sorts of Halloween-themed game, ranging from Toucan Sam's "Creepy Crossword" to Toucan Sam's "Freaky Riddles," and even Toucan Sam's "Wispy Word Hunt." The side panel has a recipe for "Crunchy Caramel Apples" using Apple Jacks as a primary ingredient, which is interesting since I bought Froot Loops, not Apple Jacks. Couldn't they name me one special food to make with the cereal in hand? I dunno, "Toucan Sam's Criminal Crispies" or something? Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, and if there's anything I am, it's a beggar. A beggar with Froot Loops cereal dust all over his crotch. I think I found my Halloween costume.

Hand Shaped Treat Kits
It's September 19th, 2003. Hurricane Isabel is making her presence known, and for all I know, this may be my last night alive. In these potentially final hours, I could find no better climax moment than filling plastic gloves up with popcorn. The "Hand Shaped Treat Kit," one of this year's hottest Halloween offerings, takes a page from those classic "popcorn balls" and spooks the formula up to the ultimate Scary Holiday Standard. Best of all, they're fun party favors!!!
Each kit includes twelve hand-shaped treat bags with the kind of twist ties usually reserved for those really big Hefty bags -- the ones so incredibly large that we must wonder if Hefty macabrely caters to the small yet profitable market of those who need to transport their hacked up victims as inconspicuously as possible. Sorry that I'm going on and on about these ties, but really, the hand-bags aren't all that interesting. They're just plain dye gloves with screenprinted green hands covered in assorted bat & ghost novelty rings on 'em. I guess I could talk about the exceedingly pointy orange fingernails for a while, but who'd pick that over a paragraph about twist ties?
Before you can fill the hands with popcorn, you've got to -- surprise -- make popcorn. If you've got raw, noncommercialized kernels on hand, it's preferable to use those. The mass-produced & souped-up varieties like the one shown above lack the old world charm of the nude versions, and if there's one thing you want to avoid while making god damned popcorn hands, it's robbing yourself the chance to feel 0ld sk00l.
Okay, now we're up to the fun part. The step that every would-be "treat hand" maker dreams about. It's time to fill those gloves. Crack your knuckles and prepare for an experience...
Here's the cool thing about making Halloween-themed treat hands -- in all likelihood, at the moment you put the popcorn inside the gloves, you're the only person in the whole entire world who's doing that. You've achieved a level of uniquity on par with the duckbilled platypus and the guy who hosted those old Micro Machines commercials. If you're watching a rerun of All In The Family, there's probably several thousand other people doing the exact same thing at any given time. Same goes for taking Tylenol, pissing on the side of the road, and yes -- even if you're choking out your grandmother with the very yarn she was crafting you a new winter scarf with, there's a good chance someone else is doing the same thing out there somewhere. Treat hands? No way. Unless you synchronize the activity with some friends in an effort to break universal law, you're that particular minute's only Treat Hand maker in history, sweet forever etched history. Be proud. Celebrate with a popcorn snack.
If you hate popcorn and the idea of sticking popcorn into hands, you could always use the gloves to achieve a perfectly borderline pensive/goofy fucking shithead aura. Few kits to arrive this Halloween season will pack such an impressive dichotomy. Even fewer will let you shove popcorn into plastic gloves. Treat hands are a true original.
Upon completion, that's what the treat hands look like. Overstuffed popcorn paws. The package claims that you could fill these bitches with something other than popcorn, but I can't picture the flimsy bags surviving sharp pretzels or potato chips. Considering them as "party favors," you gotta figure that nobody's gonna give out the 7,000 Reese's Pieces it'd take to fill a single glove, either. These are for popcorn only, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm serious -- don't let anyone do it. Don't ruin your Halloween with false truths. Don't swap the pop.
Don't forget you can go to X-E yourself because there is all kinds of great stuff over there, but be sure to come back here or I will hunt you down like the dog your are! The X-E link is over on the right isde of the page.

Come On! He Did The Right Thing
This is what's wrong with the NHL right now. (among other things) I'm watching the Leaf game and 19 year old Matt Stajan gets completely crushed by a hit (fair hit, by the way) The kid was absolutely pasted. Domi immediately jumps in and drops the gloves with the guy and they have a pretty good little fight. That SHOULD have been the end of it. But rather than both players getting 5 minute fighting majors, Domi also gets 2 minutes for instigating and a 10 minute misconduct.
It's just not right. Gretzky was great for so many years because everyone in the league knew that if they took exception to him, Marty McSorley was gonna kick your ass. That's how it was with every team's stars and rookies. There's nothing wrong with standing up for your players. It's a tough game.
That damn kid would have been run all night if Domi hadn't stepped to the plate on his behalf? Now he's being left alone but Domi got way more than he deserved.
On a side note: After the fight Stajan went over to Domi as he skated to the box and tapped his shin pads with his stick and thanked him for helpin' him out. It's a respect thing. The guy's making the rules don't seem to see that. The way things are now, goons with no skill are free to run over "real" players with no fear of retribution because they know if someone tries to do something about it, they'll do big time in the box.
That's it for tonight. Be Safe Kids.

Someone's Not Happy. That Makes Me Happy
I received this via e-mail today from our good friend Chris who was kind enough to contribute in more ways than he intended to the Q & A that we did down the page a bit. Here's what the poor guy had to say.
"Hey you prick. All I did was write in and ask a few questions which you guys had encouraged relentlessly. I don't need your shit. Bringing me up time after time in the rest of that post was retarded of you. You two truley are homos. I still think this site is stupid. Guys with nothing better to do than write a public diary seems real cool to me. I ain't coming back to this stupid site and i don't think anyone else should either.
Kiss My Ass
Chris
Well, it's good to know he cared enough to come back and see if we answered him. Which we did. And he seemed very complimentary, don't you think? I mean he did say we were pretty cool for doing this, right? Chris seems like a good guy with a little pent up agression. I want you to repeat the following before writing us again, Chris. (since I know you're reading, your kinda always comes back)
"3, 2, 1,
1, 2, 3,
What the heck is bothering me?"
Repeat that a few times and you'll feel much better, I think. I mean if it worked for Carl Windslow while trying to do with that bad-ass Steve Urkell then I'm sure it can work for you, man. Be strong. I'm in this with you. I also think you need to find a better way to sign your e-mails. That wings on "Kiss My Ass" won't fly very far when you write a cover letter for a job someday.
Kids, I ask you to keep Chris in your thoughts. He seems to be having a rough time. I'll now take a page form his book and sign off though.
Piss Off Chris

Behind Blue Eyes
I just heard Limp Bizkit's cover of the old Who song Behind Blue Eyes for the first time. Ug, I hope it doesn't catch on. I can't think of any time that a cover of a song has ever made me hate the original but there's a first time for everything and if I have to be subjected to that crap a few thousand more times, this could just be it. I never thought I'd be happy to hear a song by Creed but since this time it meant that Behind Blue Eyes was over, it made my goddamn day.
I'm not even sure where to begin with talking about how bad this song is. For one thing, there's no emotion to it at all. When Roger Daltrey sings it, you feel something and you get the idea that the lyrics mean something to him and more than that, that the song is at least somewhat meaningful to the rest of the band backing him up. When Fred Durst sings it it sounds like a guy who's out of ideas for angry songs of his own and decides to cash in on something from years back that most people who would buy his music have probably never even heard. He's trying to prove that he can sing too which is a bad idea considering what song he picked. If you're going to try to prove that you can expand your horizons as a musician a good rule of thumb is to write your own songs to make your point. And don't even get me started on the lack of heaviness in the music or for that matter, the lack of anything resembling what that song was supposed to be all about musicly. Ok, what that song was always about to me musicly anyway.
If I were either surviving member of the Who, after hearing what Fred and the gang did to my song, I'd kill myself just so I could roll over in my grave in reaction to it.

Letterman, Leafs & The Most Evil Person On The Planet
For the last little while Letterman's been airing some stuff in a segment called "Meet The Governor". He's got clips of Arnond smoking pot, groping women and just basically making an ass of himself in general. It's some pretty funny stuff that Letterman has said "will become a regular segment until I get bored.". Definitely check it out. Hell, Letterman's funny anyway so I don't know why you wouldn't be watching. Eat me Leno.
The Leafs finally break out last night. 5 goals in a game is the new high-water mark for the Leafs this season. Unforunately they also allowed the below average forwards of the Coyotes to score 4 times. (and I am aware it was the back-up in goal). Up until last night I thought the defense played pretty well. Last night they were, by no means, terrible but they weren't as good as they had been. Hopefully now that the offense has gotten a bit of a kick-start the defense can get going again and they can put a nice little streak together.
THIS JUST IN!!!
Steve has alligned himself with Satan, herself. The person kind enough to leave the nice little critique of my work is someone I know quite well. She's heartless! Steve, I wish you luck with your new found best friend but be careful. She's goddamn relentless when she finds out about that little eye thing. Oops. Did I let that slip out?
to this mystery writer I have only one thing to say to you... and you're probably the only one who will get it.
"I see better at night!"
With that, I'm finished.

PS. Inside jokes are no good. No more after this. Sorry!

People Love Matt, What Can I Say
Just saw this on the comment boards, which any of you can feel free to use by the way. There's a link at the end of every post that you can use to drop feedback like this person who is now my new best friend did. And if you're not a fan of comment boards,
email
also works. Keep in mind that I had nothing to do with getting this posted anywhere other than here on the main page. Somebody, who clearly knows who the true talent is around here did this all on his or her own.
"Matt, I've read some of your postings. I applaud your attempts at inserting "BIG" words into your posts. However when used in the wrong context, and poorly
spelled, they sort of lose their magic. If you want to succeed, invest in an editor, and by that, I don't mean Steve."
What more can I say? Well for now, nothing.

Time To Open The Mailbag
Well, we've had some questions e-mailed to us that we figured we'd answer in bulk right here. for some reason you decided not to do it on the comments board, but hey, that's fine. E-mails works.
Before we get started. We'll make this a semi-regular thing. Once we reach a certain number of questions we can post your answers up here in kind of an "ask the idiots" kinda deal. Now, this is our first time so bare with us and we'll get better as we go. We promise!
For now, though. Courage!
Q: Do either of you have any kind of qualifications for doing something like this? Or even a reason to because so far this all seems like pointless ramblings. By a diary you fucking homo's.
Chris
A: Well, Chris. It's a good question. neither of us has any internet background, any kind of certificate that says we have any rite to answer your questions with any kind of professional background, or any interest in what goes on in your petty meaningless life... But we like ours, and you're here aren't you? So you must kinda like ours too. Also, there is no need to resort to name calling. You are not the first person to question Steve and I's sexuality, and you sure as hell won't be the last. Let's move on, Kids.
Q: I've seen you both post things talking about punk rock. Are either of you in to Ska?
Featherhead
A: See, Chris? No need to be rude. Just strait to the point. And Featherhead, nothing like some good ol' Ska to put you to sleep at night. That seemed like a pretty boring question and so far boring answer, so let me throw a few bands at you all to check out, F-Head here probably already has these. Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, and Less Than Jake are all with your money. There ya go F-Head. Thanks for writing and being cooler than our friend Chris.
Next!
Q: This question is for Matt. How the helll old r u? Turltes, Mario, Grinch? Time 4 u 2 get a life, man.
Sweety Pye
A: Do you know Chris? You two should hook up. Anyway, i'm 20 and am maturity challenged. I just miss my childhood stuff. We can't all have no hearts and no feelings like you. Besided, in all fairness, Mario is cool at ANY age. Lighten up, sista!
Things are starting to get a little heated here. Here's one for Steve, maybe it will lighten the mood a bit.
Q:Yo, Steve. I love life is a hi-way. why u gotta go slammin' on it. it's a goddamn classic u peckerhead
Jake Da Snake
A: I have to respectfully disagree. You, on the other hand, are a goddamn classic peckerhead.
Oh dear, that didn't go good at all? This one's short. Let's see what we have here.
Q: Will this site ever be good?
Heather
A: Fuck You!
Ok, well this has gotten pretty hostile, i must say so maybe this is a good spot to wrap it up for this week. Write me and Steve and we'll answer whatever it is you might wanna know. Cua, I mean. We know pretty much everything, don't we Chris? So feel free to send your inquiries over to me or Steve.
Y'all have a good day, now. Except you Chris. I hope your day sucks.

Changing History
I was just reading something over on scott keith's blog that i've been noticing throughout the baseball playoffs that i've meant to comment on for a while as it's really pissing me off.
Roger Clemens is set to retire from Major League Baseball at the end of this year's playoffs. He made his final start last night but may be used in the bullpen should this series go 7 games. But that's not my point.
Naturally, when you're one of the greatest pitchers of all time, you're retirement will be covered very heavily. Throughout the playoffs there has been little video packages and retrospectives thrown together to show career highlights.
I find it odd that most of these seem to portray that he went directly from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankess leaving a 3 year window of apparent nothingness. You know which years I'm talking about, don't you? Yup. That would be those 3 years where he played in Toronto that apparently we're all supposed to forget about.
And there's that small matter of the two Cy Young Awards he won up here signifying him as the best pitcher in baseball that year. Where did those come from?
I digress

Mother not happy with son's plunge over Niagara Falls
Mercury Wire Services
CANTON, MICH. - The parents of a 40-year-old man who went over Niagara Falls with only the clothes on his back say they're not happy with their son's actions.
"We would rather he hadn't done that," Doris Jones, 77, said Tuesday.
Kirk Jones of Canton, Mich., is the first person known to have gone over Niagara Falls without safety devices and survived.
Jones was not seriously injured and was in hospital in Niagara Falls in stable condition. The Jones family has made a number of trips to Niagara Falls.
Surviving a drop from falls had intrigued Jones for years, his mother said.
------
Well it's heartening to know that Mom's not proud of the fact that her son is a fucking idiot. I was actually waiting to see a story where his family defended him as being the adventurous type. Wait, I think I remember his friends already doing that. Honestly I'm not sure what the bigger tragedy is here, the fact that his buddy didn't think enough of the guy to try and stop him or the fact that he lived to tell his story. It might sound harsh but just hear me out.
I was talking to a friend of mine about this yesterday and we both agreed that it's always the dumb ones that live. You've got a guy like this who just decides "hey, I'm gonna hurl myself over this waterfall and see what happens" and he lives while the guy who does these sort of things for a living takes all the safety measures required and somehow still manages to screw up and die. Or all of those drunk driving accidents you hear about where the innocent victims of somebody's stupidity suffer painful firey deaths while the worthless piece of shit drunks responsible for these mishaps walk away with a cut on their hand and a torn shirt. I suppose you could argue that justice is being served because these people have to live with the consequences of their actions forever but what about the people who are no longer able to live with anything anymore? Wher'es their justice? And is it fair that the family of a perfectly innocent human being should have to live with the consequences of somebody else's stupidity? At least I've finally figured out why stupidity is overrunning the earth, it's because the morons are killing off all the smart people among us, slowly but surely.
And on that uplifting note I bid you all a fond farewell.
Until next time, I'm
Steve,
and I'm trying to be smart enough to get by and dumb enough to survive.

Porno Karaoke
Just heard this on the news and got a kick out of it so I thought I'd pass it on to all of you.
In Germany right now the latest new trend is something that from German to English pretty much translates in to Porno Karaoke.
The idea is very simple. Its done at karaoke bars there and a male and a female pair will go up on stage and take a microphone. A porno DVD is then slid in to the player. The script of the two "actors" carrying out these wonderful films then comes up on the screen for the two (most likely wasted) volunteers to recite. Everything from words, to sounds, to grunts come across the screen for the two to try and replicate.
At the end of the night, the people in the bar vote on who had the most convincing performance. However its probably more accurate to say that the real winners are the friends of those who got drunk enough to do it, as they had the most entertainment and something to black-male their friends with down the road, should the need arise.
Grunt away, everyone.

I Miss The Ninja Turtles... So Here They Are
Well it's been a slow day for posting so here's something to keep you all of my back! I kinda like all this old stuff. So here's a neat little commentary on the most famous episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ever done (arguably). And this is back when the Turtles were cool. The classics that we all loved. Not the new lame Turtles that I'm ashamed to see. They've wrecked it, but i digress. Enjoy all.
--
Many would assume that the original appeal of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stemmed only from the heroes themselves, but this couldn't be further from the truth. At heart, those toitles became pretty boring once you got used to their pizza eating and karate styling. For the toon to have lasted as long as it did, they certainly needed to beef things up. No, I'm not talking about that damn rat or leggy, yellow-clad news reporters. With TMNT, at least for me, it was all about the villains.
Shredder might've been the top card, and his mutant minions might've supplied most of the show's comic relief, but the real soul of the Technodrome was a bubbly pink alien brain named Krang. In terms of animated characters, they didn't come any more unique or creative as this guy -- the former warlord of another dimension, banished from his home and even his body, Krang added a delightful sci-fi edge to the show. Whether by cackling at his own jokes or creating lasers capable of blowing up the planet, Krang helped his surrounding characters lead much more interesting lives, however fictitious those lives may have been. Personally, I like think the whole show was based on some obscure true story. This is mainly because I don't like living in a world that doesn't really have its own Krang. He was a damn popular character, so I can't be alone.
Today, we're going to look at one of the more famous episodes in TMNT history, back before it degenerated completely into show after show of puns and general goofiness. Believe it or not, the first season was actually very well written, all things considered. There's an amazing continuity to it -- the characters referenced tiny things that happened five episodes prior, and for a cartoon that was more or less just a vehicle to sell ten trillion action figures, the writers were putting some serious effort into it. While the hardcore fans always complained about the changes made in the transition from the much darker comic series, I was just one of the elemementary schoolers who couldn't get enough of these afternoon adventures. This episode, titled 'The Shredder Is Splintered,' goes a long way in proving just how in-depth those first few seasons were. More importantly, it's where that cool, disembodied brain finally found a body to call his own.
Oh, I'll only be focusing on the Krang-centric bits of the story, basically because I'm in a very Krang-centric mood today. It happens a little more often than I care to admit. So, at this point, Shredder's been defeated by the Turtles a few times. His new mutant goons haven't been able to put a dent in their victory record, either. Even with the aid of Krang's varied alien doodads, Shredder's getting nowhere. He can't conquer Earth until he murders our heroes, and after weeks and weeks of Krang's incessant begging, Shred's finally agreed to supply him with a new body. I remember being thoroughly worried that this would put an end to the great 'pink brain' look, but the end results put my fears to rest. More on that in a few minutes.
Anyway, look at that picture above -- that's one of your star characters, folks. How anyone could deny that a show featuring a talking brain that leaves puddles of bodily fluids wherever it sits isn't fantastic is beyond me. Krang implores Shredder to add a microchip to his new body that'll grant him enough superpowers to finally take down the Turtles. In previous episodes, Shredder was more than a little concerned with Krang rebelling upon receipt of a new pair of legs, but since the situation's gotten so desperate, he's got no choice.

For those new to the lore, yes, that's Shredder. With a helmet I've tried countless times to recreate out of cardboard and tin foil, Shredder waltzes over to the sheet-covered Krang Body and fits the chip inside. It's not as arduous a process as you might think -- he kinda just lodges it into the android body's shoulderblade. I'm not sure where Shredder - formerly a ninja who devoted his entire life to hand-to-hand combat studies - picked up all of this technical know-how, but for the sake of Krang getting some working hands again, I'll forgive the oversight.
By the way, these older episodes are nowhere near as goofy and comical as the zillions that came later -- obviously, they were still meant for kids, but there was enough maturity to at least pull it to a middle school level. Sadly, there wasn't enough maturity to pull it to the level where I'm not slightly embarrassed spending so much time writing about it in my mid 20s, but sticks and stones and all that shit. Point is, it was such a different show back then than even I remembered typically watching -- still fun and lighthearted, but if TMNT was live action with the same exact scripts, I guarantee you older guys and gals would've been just as into it. Duh. Live action talking pink brain. Who wouldn't be into that?
In the moment of truth, Shredder picks up the slimy thing and places Krang in the gastric section of his new threads. While Krang fits himself into place, Shred flicks one of the Technodrome's 40,000 oversized switches, causing an indoor lightning storm that's apparently meant to result in the brain becoming one with the android. "It's alive...IT'S ALIVE" sounds so much better coming from a voice artist desperately trying to fake a tinge of Japanese heritage, and finally, Krang wakens in his new form and prepares to take over the world. Or beat up Turtles. Or both. Something villainous.
Solidifying TMNT as one of the greatest shows to ever air, take a look at Krang's new body. A big fat bald guy in red panties, wearing sunglasses, with a friggin' talking brain in its stomach. Find me another character anywhere that even approaches that kind of offbeat appeal. He's a walking trainwreck - you can't help but look, over and over again, and you've got no recourse against being totally infatuated. The new body is more like a car for Krang -- it's got no mind of its own, with our brainy friend merely using a head-side control system to maneuver it around the Technodrome. Outside of bugs that intentionally land on bug-frying light bulbs, it's the most ridiculous and beautiful thing I think I've ever seen.
Krang's body is loaded with extras gizmos and weapons, too. His hand, for example, can switch off to a pair of violently silver shears. They seemed to neglect this aspect of his powers in later episodes, or maybe Krang just forgot that he could do that. Gloriously, the body's head mimics Krang's emotions perfectly -- when Krang screams, the android's mouth drop opens and starts fumbling into shiver territory. Shredder really pulled out all the stops with this thing. Though, I do tend to wonder if Krang's original blueprint called for his new body to look like a big fat naked guy. I know alien tastes can differ, but could that be chic on any planet?
It gets better, and by better I mean, 'more inane.' See, Krang's installed this giant television screen in the Technodrome that doubles as a portal to his homeworld of Dimension X. In said dimension, a legion of creatures made of rock await their old lord's orders. So, not only is Krang a big pink brain with eyes -- he's a big pink brain with eyes who commands a troop of rock monsters in military helmets. Just when you thought you'd pegged him down, Krang blasts back with more insanity. Dimension X, by the way, is more like a big red room than an actual dimension -- everyone kinda just floats around aimlessly, covered in darkroom lights with nothing to do but wait for Krang's phone calls. But you know, if I thought Krang might be calling, I'd wait by the phone too.
Leading this group of granite warriors is 'General Traag' -- basically the same as all the others, but at least he had a name. He's also the only rock creature to have his own action figure, which was appropriately blunt and heavy enough to break through a plate glass window. I speak from experience, unless I'm just lying. Either way, I threw it at my dog once, who responded by literally barking out 'roo raffe ree rah ronrussion!' It died soon after, I got a hamster the following week. Yeah, um, Traag and friends are waiting in Dimension X for Krang to send the order -- once he does, they'll come over to Earth and kill all of us. At least I'm pretty sure that's what was said -- hard to tell with that engaging moving crimson air all over the television set.
Almost forgot that this show was about Ninja Turtles -- there they are, ready to take down Krang. Unfortunately, Krang's new superchip allows him to alter his molecular structure. This means he can grow himself to heights previously reserved for volcanoes and basketball players. Krang's newly found size capabilities mean serious trouble for our green heroes, who were just about to enter the Technodrome for the, hah, 'final battle.' The toon had many final battles -- by my math, eight per episode. This would be their 3rd or 4th final battle, and while it ain't the first or the last, it's the only one where Krang is shown being 400 feet tall. That makes it special. Told you Krang kicked ass.
See? See what I mean? Where else are ya gonna find four mutant turtles who know karate getting chased by a Godzilla-sized bald, naked robot with a big pink talking brain in its stomach? Nowhere, positively nowhere. At least give TMNT credit for cornering some new markets.
Donatello magically deduces that Krang's size must be the result of an alien microchip hidden somewhere in his robot torso, so following suit with this particular episode's trend of being completely surreal, the Turtles unstitch Krang's shoulder and go inside his body. Fantastic. After searching through the various giant bolts and levers, they finally locate the unholy microchip. Once Donatello whacks it to pieces with his trusty broomstick, the Turtles make a narrow escape as Krang quickly reverts back to his almost kind of normal size. My fantasies lent an entirely different ending to this scene, but I doubt they could show it on television.
Still, the battle isn't quite over yet. There's still the small matter of those fifty-thousand rock soldiers from Dimension X waiting to assault Earth. Just as they arrive, the Turtles manage to hit one of the Technodrome's pitifully self-defeatist buttons, this specific one causing the portal to suck things in instead of the other way around. Within moments, all the stupid rock guys find themselves back in their shitty, boring red homeworld. That's not all, though -- the portal goes absolutely batshit, sucking in way more than General Traag's army...
Admittedly, it's a pretty piss poor showing for Krang's first appearance in his new body. You'd think they would've given the guy a small taste of victory, if only to convince all the kids watching that the villains actually had a chance of winning once in a while. Instead, all poor Krang gets is a few minutes to look menacing before being totally trashed. In this case, everything in the Technodrome gets pulled into the portal, and finally, so does the entire structure itself. The Turtles manage to flee, because in the context of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, turtles are extremely, extremely fast.
This leads to a little development that lasted for quite a stretch of episodes. That's the great thing about the first few seasons of the show -- there were actual storylines that weren't forgotten the next time you watched it. In an effort to switch things up and alternate some new characters into the mix, they threw the ol' Technodrome right into Dimension X...
See, told you. Would I lie?
Krang's happy with their new location, while Shredder insists that they go back to Earth. But that's the funny thing about Dimension X -- Krang's pretty much God there. He calls the shots, and calls them with the kind of style only a disgusting, disembodied brain could. After explaining to Shredder that he's the new boss, Krang revels in the opportunity to do, I dunno, whatever it is people do in Dimension X. I guess they mostly just float around and develop film.
By the next episode, Shredder's pestilent begging finally paid off. Krang ships him back to Earth, though without his goons and usual equipment. The next few shows revolved around Shredder attempting to take down the Green Menace with only his wits, and some help from a grungy professor who keeps calling him 'master.' To give you an idea of the entertainment provided by TMNT, the grungy professor is ultimately mutated into a human fly who raids warehouses for piles of sugar. Christ, I forgot how much I loved this show.
Oh, there's one more notable thingy about The Shredder Is Splintered...
We get to see Shredder without his trademark faceplate. I guess you really have to be into this shit to be excited about that, but hey, I'm really into this shit.
Overall: I've only reviewed a few eps of TMNT on the site over the years, but this is easily one of my faves from the entire series -- and that's a pretty lengthy series we're talking about. As the seasons progressed, the show went backwards, apparently deciding that its true calling was to entertain three-year-olds and three-year-olds only. My point? There's a new Ninja Turtles cartoon on now, and a lot of people seem to take issue with its lack of aliens and all the other crap that made the original famous. Don't be so hard on it, though -- in today's culture, animated programs really aren't just meant for kids anymore. The writers, producers and animators all realized the market of idiot adults, myself included, willing to sit through twenty-minute toy commercials as often as possible. TMNT's new show might be missing some of the vintage hallmarks, but at least they aren't limiting the heroes to toilet jokes and background cymbal crash sound effects, Be thankful for that, and going back a bit further - be thankful for Krang.
--
Many would assume that the original appeal of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stemmed only from the heroes themselves, but this couldn't be further from the truth.
